Usually I work with DAW softwares and VST instruments for all the sounds which are not guitars.
I use Guitar Pro to produce tabs, of course. Write your own music can be tricky when you start. Anyway, if you write down some riff or lick using a tab software, you can hear right now if the tab is right. Studying some music theory about note duration and the solfège can help. -------------------- ::: Main Gear ::: Guitars: Washburn N4 Vintage | Washburn N2 | Washburn WI67Pro | Washburn WG-587 | Washburn EA20B Amps: Laney GH50L (head) | Laney GS410 & GS212IE (cabinets) | Rocktron PROGAP Ultra (rack preamp) | Rocktron Velocity 150 (power amp) | Marshall VS230 (combo) FXs: Rocktron Intellifex + custom pedalboard (check my video demo) Other: Shredneck | Intellitouch PT10 tuner Picks: Esseti Picks Software & Recording Gear: Cubase 4 | Overloud TH1 | Mackie Onyx 400F | EZdrummer | Korg Pandora PX4D ------------------------------------------------------- myspace.com/jerryarcidiacono Check out my video lessons and instructor board! |

I don't write down anything, I am used to record all my ideas, and in case I forget something I only have to listen to my tapes. This is not only much faster (and in my opinion also easier) than writing everything down, it is also a very good training for your ears.

I write down things that other people need to read. Especially GMC lessons and copyrighted songs, for the copyright office.. -------------------- ::: Main Gear ::: Guitars: Washburn N4 Vintage | Washburn N2 | Washburn WI67Pro | Washburn WG-587 | Washburn EA20B Amps: Laney GH50L (head) | Laney GS410 & GS212IE (cabinets) | Rocktron PROGAP Ultra (rack preamp) | Rocktron Velocity 150 (power amp) | Marshall VS230 (combo) FXs: Rocktron Intellifex + custom pedalboard (check my video demo) Other: Shredneck | Intellitouch PT10 tuner Picks: Esseti Picks Software & Recording Gear: Cubase 4 | Overloud TH1 | Mackie Onyx 400F | EZdrummer | Korg Pandora PX4D ------------------------------------------------------- myspace.com/jerryarcidiacono Check out my video lessons and instructor board! |

THe method changes from one person to another, but in general first you layout some basic ideas, melodies and riffs, and build around it. For starters you can check your favorite bands songs for arrangement ideas , and then make your own riffs, chords, verses, choruses, bridge, solo etc. Then after the guitar work if you wanna complete the song, must work on the drums, bass, pads etc

Well you have to record songs...Writing it down into guitar pro is not a good way in my opinion..AS you sad, it gets difficult to write down EVERYTHING you come up with..You said that recording works for you only for riffs etc ? Why can't you after you come up with a intro and first verse for a song record them ? I do it that way..Make the song piece by piece and record it that way (piece by piece)..Then you can experiment with the arrangement too (copy-paste parts etc)..
