How Do You Write Songs?, As in how to you write everything down?

My main focus with guitar playing currently is songwriting, so I've been trying to do a bit of that lately, but I have realised that something is wrong. I always try to write everything down and arrange it with guitar pro, but I realised that it makes the songwriting a lot harder, sometimes there are things that I can play easily but I don't know how to write it down (mostly because of BPM changes or time signature changes), so I've been tryi9ng to find another way of simply saving songs and riffs. I know I can record, but for me that only works for saving single riffs and not for arranging entire songs.

So, how do you do the whole arranging and writing songs down/saving them?

Edit: If any moderator reads this, would you mind changing the "to" to "do" in the topic name? laugh.gif

Usually I work with DAW softwares and VST instruments for all the sounds which are not guitars.
I use Guitar Pro to produce tabs, of course.
Write your own music can be tricky when you start.
Anyway, if you write down some riff or lick using a tab software, you can hear right now if the tab is right.

Studying some music theory about note duration and the solfège can help.

I can only speak for myself, as i think everyone's got their own way of doing it. What i do is start of by jamming on the guitar, trying to find something that sounds nice for example (Cm-Fm-Ab-G7) then i keep playing thoose chords to find the rythm or flow wich would be appropiate, and once satisfied i just record it in my Sequencer(Cubase etc). Next il just jam thoose chords a bit and try to figure what would sound nice as a chours, and once satsified i record that as well, and link them together.

To be honest i think its best if you can memorize what you are playing, so you can just grab your guitar and play it, offcourse it depends how big the arrangement is, if its just a pure popsong its not really so nescesarry to record it, but for odd signatures, and loads of small riffs/fills i would do the same, step by step in my sequencer untill i got everything down.

I don't write down anything, I am used to record all my ideas, and in case I forget something I only have to listen to my tapes. This is not only much faster (and in my opinion also easier) than writing everything down, it is also a very good training for your ears.

Good point Marcus.
I write down things that other people need to read. Especially GMC lessons and copyrighted songs, for the copyright office.. biggrin.gif

So when you put it together you also just do it without writing it down and then maybe just record a quick and dirty version of the song? That actually sounds like something I could try, the only problem will then be how to show my bandmates how to play it, but I suppose that's still easier than having to sit at the comupter while writing and tabbing everything down while I'm at it.

I use notebook paper and use the lines as strings on the guitar... I just letter the lines on the side like this, then tab my stuff fast and record it, before i forget it...

THe method changes from one person to another, but in general first you layout some basic ideas, melodies and riffs, and build around it. For starters you can check your favorite bands songs for arrangement ideas , and then make your own riffs, chords, verses, choruses, bridge, solo etc. Then after the guitar work if you wanna complete the song, must work on the drums, bass, pads etc

I was asking about how to memorise/write it down, not on how to come up with something, but thanks anyways wink.gif

Well you have to record songs...Writing it down into guitar pro is not a good way in my opinion..AS you sad, it gets difficult to write down EVERYTHING you come up with..You said that recording works for you only for riffs etc ? Why can't you after you come up with a intro and first verse for a song record them ? I do it that way..Make the song piece by piece and record it that way (piece by piece)..Then you can experiment with the arrangement too (copy-paste parts etc).. smile.gif
