Why, while I am playing, my pinkie finger remains flabby and it's so hard for me to fold it up the right way and mantain it in the right position? When i put my fingers on the fretboard my pinkie never stays sharp, always kinda fall down and remain twisted.
I know it's a funny problem but...what can i do??

If you mean that your pinky is curling under when you play...try using tape to train it not to do that.

If this isn't what you mean...post a picture so that we can better understand you smile.gif

When I first started playing I learned the pentatonic scale first and it's only 2 notes per string, needless to say I didn't use my pinky much. It made learning the modes difficult because I learned 3 notes per string patterns and I had the pinky problem....My pinky wasn't flabby but it was rigid and difficult to utilize.
What I did was practice the chromatic scale up and down the guitar as soon as I picked it up for a warm up. I got all my fingers moving in sync and my pinky issue was resolved.

if you have a long nails try to cut it little till your fingers working good on the fret board with some exercises
like : fingers 1.2.3.4 at frets 1-2-3-4 starting on fret 1strings : E6 --> A5-->D4--G3-->B2-->E1
and do the same again starting on frets 3.4.5.6 then 5.6.7.8 then 7.8.9.10 then 9.10.11.12

pinkys suck....weakling of the bunch. It takes time to build strength in that little critter. Keep at it and it will feel and work normally.

Peace.

I found doing chromatic exercises great for building pinky strength. Marcus's warm up lesson I believe it's his first lesson would be a good place to start.

I can second that. A few months of playing this for 20 minutes a day has turned my pinky into a rock smile.gif

Interesting. Can you explain me better this thing of the tape?
@Hisham: Yeah, I always keep short nails to be able to play smile.gif I will try the lesson you showed me!
@Dejan: Thank you I will try that!
@ all the others: thanx, I am already practicing Marcus' lessons, even though I already knew some of the first ones I think they're VERY useful anyway and the last lessons which I didn't knew are pretty interesting. But My pinkie's still flabby though.. Surely I have to exercise more! biggrin.gif

I think keeping your thumb behind the neck, not over the neck, is essential to play with your pinky parallel to the fretboard! It's very improbable that it will fall down after the thumb is behind properly smile.gif
Or maybe I don't grasp you problem... I have played with the pinky since I started.

P.S. Pure te di Milano? smile.gif

Well I know this will sound funny but try the Gripmaster hand exerciser(amazon.com). It comes in different tenisons from Extra Light(yellow), Light(blue), Medium(red), Heavy(black) and Extra Heavy(white). What I like best about them is that they allow you to work your fingers individually or together. I would reccomend that most people start with either the Yellow or blue one because I started with the red one and found it pretty hard to squeese and do the repetitions like I wanted to and I have very strong hands.

Since I've been using the gripmaster I've noticed that I can do a lot more on the guitar and my hand does not get tired as easily as it did before. not to mention that my ring and little finger can do a lot more than it did before. Using this tool along with regular practice has made my progress a lot easier.

Good Luck.

Yeah my pinky was pretty rubbish at first as well. I just used my first 3 fingers. Now though I use my pink much more than my 3rd finger as it is much stronger.

Well the deal with the pinky is, if its not doing what you want it to do - flip that dusty metronome on and start doing exercises everyday that involve useing your pinky. Dejan has suggested one of many good ones, so check out the archive for lessons that might suit you smile.gif

I have been doing 3-note per-string exercies for hours daily and I have control over it just as much as any other finger smile.gif you too can with practice wink.gif

Yeah that's the thing that made my pinky the way it should be! At first I had some problems with it because I really liked the sound of the exercise and couldn't stop playing it and then had some pain in the pinky but after months of playing it almost every day now my pinky's okay :]

Cheers,
Hristian
