GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Best Way To Master More In Less Time?

Posted by: Raph Oct 26 2009, 07:33 PM

Hey guys!

As the title just says, what do you think it is in your opinion?

And what I mean by "more" is like the usual in practicing guitar (eg techniques, songs etc.).

Thanks.

It feels kind a bad to expect more in less time.
There might be some ways, I'm not sure
but my moto is... the more, the better. smile.gif

Though isn't 20 minutes of quality practice better than 12 hours of just messing about?

I dont think there are any "shortcuts", if You wanna sound good it takes some time and a lot of effort, but listening to music when not playing is essential, memorizing patterns while doing the dishes maybe makes some sense...

It's very hard to tell,
no matter how hard you try to just mess around for 12 hours
your brain would still do some work, with our without your intention.

All I wanted to say is that you should spend as much time as possible with your instrument,
sometimes it'd be random jamming, sometimes it's focused practicing etc,
just stay connected to it.

And there are surely no shotcuts as stuffy said
but you should try to focus on few things when practicing
if you wanna make the best out it:
- full concentration
- high level of self criticism so you could work on errors as you make them
- play everything clean and accurate
- match your practicing tasks with your skills if possible, wasting too much time
on something that is far beyond your current limits is....waste of time
- try not to look at the watch when you practice if you can, it seems distracting imo, perhaps set an alarm to stop.

I probably said nothing new. smile.gif

I usually bookmark some lessons and make a list of my tasks.
Then, when I've got time to practice, I choose one or more things from my list to practice, set a metronome and practice for as long as I enjoy it. I mark that task as 'done' and then next time I do something else from that list.

Until I have done everything 5 times, or mastered it (things like AP and sweeping are never mastered, but songs can be mastered). Then I make a new list, bookmark new lessons, etc. This goes on and on until I die, or my arms get amputated.

I have found that with organized practice routine you can achieve more things in less time. You can of course throw in jamming and noodling in your practice routine as well - those things can certainly bring another element in your improvement. Another thing I suggest is constant practice, every day for specific amount of time rather then once or twice a week. You need to build practicing habit. When you wake up, first thing you should thing about is "I can't wait to play my guitar today". smile.gif
