Hi Petr! Welcome to our thread for Gab's Army!

Here we will work together in order to take your guitar playing to a new level based on your music goals. Please organize here all the info that about you regarding your technique and theory knowledge, current practice and goals. Please also tell me which are your favorite musicians and bands.

Hi Gab,

I have been playing over 3 years now. I can usually practice 1-2 hours a day.
You can see two recent lessons which I worked on with Cosmin.

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=53661
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=53423&hl=

one older one which failed and I would like to finish it because I have been on it for ages ...
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=52726&hl=

I have been working recently also on the lesson which you suggested, but the original tempo is bit fast for me at the moment
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Alternate-Picking-Workout-2/
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/20150108-140

Lessons which I would like to do
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/The-Voice-Of-Your-Guitar/ - another one I have been working on it for ages ... without much success

So it seems that I need to do some level 2 lessons first:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Metal-for-beginners-Megadeth-1/#
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Metallica-For-Beginners/
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Iron-Maiden-For-Beginners/ I have worked on this one but can not get my head around the rhythm from 0:20

In general I would like to be able play some covers (lets start with some old Metallica) and work on applying some theory.

Theory - I think most of it has been written somewhere, so I would ask just to pick a topic, give me some link to read and then quick question to test if I got it.

I read the Guthrie's Govan Creative Guitar 1,
topics - scales (maj, min), intervals, chords (triads), chord progressions

I also have "Fretboard mastery" book from Troy Stetina which seems good as well.

So if I use the book Guthrie's as reference,
I read and I think fully understand following pages and topics

pages 48-54
- I can find all notes on the fretboard when starting at zero fret and then moving up but dont remember them by hard
- i know the circle of 5th basics, but dont remember it by hard
- Rhythm - notes length should be all clear

pages 55-60
- major scale pattern (formula)
- intervals (know the basics, but have to count them on fretboard one by one to find them)
- triads - major and formulas for the others - for this and the below, i understand but dont remember by hard
- I know how to name triads which harmonize a scale
- the formula of them I ii(m) iii(m) IV V vi(m) vii(m), typical progressions

pages 61-62
- CAGED - understand but never practiced

pages 63-64
- minor + major pentatonic - know the formula, not much recent practice

So thats about it. Beside taking it further I would like to be able to use what I know already, as I said to be able to find a key, simple chord progression on a song. Also on many things where i said "I understand principle but can not do it instantly" such as find a interval without counting etc - it would be great if you gave me the priorities what are the most important to start with learning.

Looking forward what will be the plan

tx Petr

Hi Petr, thanks a lot for all this organized material. I understand what you mean and what you are looking for. We should divide your practice routine in two big sections that would be technique and theory applied.

During this first week I would like to suggest this plan:

Technique:

Working on this lesson by Cosmin since it is great for practicing phrasing, vibrato, bending, dynamics and groove. It's not an easy lesson since it has lots of bends and vibrato. Please take it patiently and work on 1 section each day or each 2 days. Dont' try to learn and play the whole things by once. Work on small blocks during the first week.

While you do this, please also play each days at least twice the technique lessons that you already know (picking hand basics, easy megadeth, etc) to keep your diary training.

Theory applied:

Work on http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=42832&view=findpost&p=694411 of the improvisation course. Replay the Vchat to see my explanations and work on the concepts for the first week. Record yourself and share your stuff here.

What do you think?

Hi Gab,

so here are some recordings,
The "voice" lesson, first part
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/voice-20150121

Because I worked recently on the alternate picking lesson - first part, I would like to continue with it, I hope it is fine to do so
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/ap150-20150121

and also some slow take of the "Neoclassical" lesson
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/neo-20150121

thanks,
Petr

Hi Petr! Thanks for this new audio files. I can notice that you are doing a very good job, this are really good takes. You are not hurrying, you are working at your level, and focusing on making things sound consistent and clear. Keep working in this way.

Here I'll give you some specific feedback:

The voice of your guitar: Good tone on this one, as well as nice dynamics. You are playing the phrases tight but there is a different in the rhythm used compared to the original lesson. Please check again the rhythm of the first 4 notes of each phrase which is different to the one that you are playing. Besides this, the lesson is evolving well. Keep going.

Alternate picking: Great job with this lesson! Your picking is sounding consistent and tight most of the time. There are only some little moments when your picking moves a bit from the beat. Other than that you are also doing a good job with this one, please continue with the following parts.

Neoclassical lesson: Nothing to fix on this one! Great job! Just start increasing tempo using metronome. Well done!

Hi Gab,

thanks for the feedback, here is another set

The "voice" lesson, first part. I was not sure what I'm doing differently so I tried to record over original track. Is it still different?

Alternate picking lesson, first part, original backing track

Hi Petr, thanks for this new audios.

The "voice" lesson is closer but there is still a small difference compared with the original lesson. If you listen to your recording, you will hear a double note when the third note appears. The original lesson plays this note upbeat and you play it downbeat. Can you hear it in your sample?

The other two lessons are evolving well. Be careful with timing when you practice the neoclassical lesson, and also try to make your bending more precise. Sometimes it is not totally consistent. The lesson based on alternate picking is sounding very good and timing is tight now.

So this means that you just have some details to improve, the overall is really good. Congrats, keep on the great job.

Hi Gab,

The alternate picking - second part seems much more difficult to me so I have nothing to post yet.

I hope I have fixed the issue with the "Voice" lesson
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/voice20150131?in=petr-14/sets/20150202a

And here is an attempt to the "Neoclassical" lesson

Hi Petr! Great to find new audios from you. I can say that both lessons are sounding good! There is just some room to make the vibrato and some faster section a bit more consistent, but it's just a matter of practice. The "voice" lesson, still has that little difference, and I think that you can notice it comparing the first 3 notes of the lesson and the first 3 notes of your take. You will see that, in the original lesson, the second note is a bit shorter than yours, and the third note is played a bit before.

Here I created a guitar pro file with the original phrase and your version. Please note the difference at the end of measure 1 and beginning of the second measure. Play the GP file to hear it.

About the alternate picking lesson, what is exactly the thing that is giving you problems?

Posted by: petr Feb 9 2015, 11:50 PM

Hi Gab,

thanks for the suggestions, here is another try
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/voice-20150209

In the alternate picking lesson is the most problematic part starting at 0:40, when the hand goes from 2nd fret to the 7th fret

Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 10 2015, 02:46 PM

Please check the video part number 5 of the alternate picking lesson. Pay attention to Darius left hand thumb when he plays the part that it giving problems. You will notice that he changes its position and you can't see it anymore. He uses what's is commonly called a classical position for the thumb in order to be able to reach a wider stretch.

Are you doing it?

PS: The voice lesson is better but sometimes you tend to forget playing the slide. Please keep on listening careful to the original lesson and sing along the melody to incorporate it.

Posted by: petr Feb 10 2015, 04:24 PM

Hi Gab,

just to be clear - I was talking about difficulty to move from the 24th to the 25th measure and play it cleanly, not to actually play it on its own.

Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 11 2015, 06:03 PM

Ah ok, yes, this kind of jumps require practice and precision. You just have to isolate the connection and work on it as a loop. You should put your sight on the target a bit before you move to be more precise with the jump, but it's just a matter of practice, there are no short cuts for it.

Posted by: petr Feb 26 2015, 12:07 AM

Hi Gab,
yes the alternate picking lesson is slightly better now, I will post the recording later.
For now I would like to get some suggestions for

"Neoclassical" lesson - Im not sure if it is any better than last time
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/neo20150225

and also this old Metallica song
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/fwbt20150225

Thanks Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 26 2015, 03:42 PM

Hi Petr, how are you?

The neoclassical lesson is evolving well, I note that there are a few things that you could have in mind during the next days of practice:

- Your vibrato could be wider. This style requires notorious vibrato while you are doing a very slight one.
- Your bending is not reaching the correct pitch most of the times, pay attention to it. It's very close, but not there.
- There are two licks that include trills like the one at 00:59. Isolate them and make the trills sounds clearer.

I love that song by Metallica! I used to play it with my friends when I was a teenager! You can play the riffs correctly but your timing is not tight and some palm muting sections are not sounding smooth enough. It's time to go deeper with your timing and put all your focus on it. The main problem appears when you play palm muting riffs, so the best thing would be to isolate them, and work over a drum loop, tapping the tempo with your foot while you practice, to feel the groove.

Hi Petr! This is a better take on this killer song!

Your riffing is more precise than your previous take. However there is still work to do mostly regarding timing. I note that the main problem appears when you go from one section to the following one (for example at 01:19, 01:52). So working on connecting one part with the other could be a good idea. That's riffing section starting at 01:52 is the weaker one, it's not totally tight most of the time. Also focus on details and make that every chord change goes tight with the drums, mostly when you have fills like at 00:28.

This one is also on the right track. I think that there must be a string out of tune on this take since there are section in which I hear pitch issues but not related to bending. I think that the overall lesson is sounding good and that there is only room to make this one sound with more feeling and dynamics. This two elements are related to bending, vibrato and the use of different intensities with your pick to make it sound more organic. These are not thing that are learnt in a few days so be patient and keep this lesson on your diary practice while you start some other lesson that cover the elements listed.

Hi Gab,
what do you think, does it have any chance to pass in the REC zone?

thanks Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 2 2015, 01:48 PM

Hi Petr, I think that this one needs more time to polish some details but also think that it would pass on REC. You shouldn't see REC as program in which you have to pass, it's a program where you receive feedback from many instructors at the same time so I strongly recommend you to post this take there.

Your vibrato looks good but you are doing it too soon. Remember to let the note sound first and then start the vibrato trying to make it sound like a natural part of the note. The last phrases could be polished a bit more, I think that it's the part that needs more practice, in order to make it sound smoother.

So once again, go for the REC! smile.gif

Hi Gab,
thanks for the feedback.

I just think that because you are doing perfect job here on the mentoring thread, there is no point sending the takes to the REC zone until they are at least close to the pass level. Sending some garbage to the REC seems to me like wasting of the time of the other instructors smile.gif

I have been on the "Neoclasic lesson" for OVER a YEAR smile.gifsmile.gif now and it seems to me really too much smile.gif so passing it would mean that I can start on something else.

Please can you check this video, Im practising there the down picking required for the Metallica song. I know it is not perfect, I just want to ask if im not doing something obviously wrong regarding hand position etc.

Thanks Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 4 2015, 11:23 PM

Hi Petr, thanks for your words about my work. smile.gif

I've checked the whole video and I don't now anything to fix regarding your down picking with palm muting. It sounds good, you get very clear tone and your timing is tight. You are on the right track. Keep going.

Hi Gab,
so here is another take on "For whom..." , hope the down picking part is better, so whats next?

and here just to show where Im with the Alternate picking lesson

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 5 2015, 11:42 PM

Hi Petr,

Metallica's cover sounds much better! Your down picking technique is more consistent now and I think that you are now ready for a trickier / faster thrash metal song or lesson. Just be careful with the repetitive lead melody that has some little timing issues here and there.

Alternate picking lesson is also on the right track. You can play the whole thing at tempo and all the notes are there. However I think that you need more time to make this sound smoother, since it seems that your right hand is not totally comfortable with many parts. I'm not totally sure but maybe the main problem is when you play with palm muting. Please keep practicing this one. There are not short cuts, it's a matter of practice.

please can you check this take

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 17 2015, 03:11 PM

Hi Petr. This is not a bad take, you are close with this lesson. I notice that your playing is not totally tight when you play with palm muting. You tend to delay the notes a bit so the notes go a bit after the bit. This is even more notorious when the licks incorporate open string notes.
Just keep on practicing this one trying to go even with the beat and share a new recording in a few days. wink.gif

Hi Petr, just a bit better but the timing issues are still notorious when you play with palm muting. I recommend you to practice at a slower tempo to be able to pay the notes totally tight, the question is, do you note the issue when you hear the take?

Hi Gab,
Im actually not sure. I listened to this take slowed down and I would say Im behind the beat at 0:34-0:45, it that correct?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 24 2015, 08:09 PM

I also hear some little problems at: 00:10, 00:14, 00:17, 00:23, etc... I mean, this is not very serious, but your playing creates a sensation of retard when you switch from open playing to palm muting. You tend to go a bit after the bit...

Hi Gab,
as you suggested, I practiced this on slower tempo, please let me know if the probs are still there, tx Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 29 2015, 11:42 PM

Hi mate, yes, it's a bit better but there problem is still there. I think that we are detecting a timing issue in your playing. Could you please play 16th notes over that metronome but just playing the same note with palm muting?

Let's see if the problem continues...

Posted by: petr May 2 2015, 10:59 AM

Hi Gab,
here it is ...
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/70metronome

and here another take where I focused on the timing
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/ap20150502

I checked it in Cubase on the track graphics

tx Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 2 2015, 04:33 PM

Hi Petr!! Excellent job! The improvement is awesome on the lesson! That's tight alternate picking. It seems that the practice has helped!

The only 16th notes over metronome is ok but there are some moments when the last 2 notes of each group of 4 16th notes is not tight, so pay attention to it.

Posted by: petr May 2 2015, 08:00 PM

Hi Gab,
Im really glad it sound better now. I have to say that I could not recognize that Im in front of the beat most of the time, only after I saw it on the graphic in Cubase. That check works perfectly with metronome, it will be probably less obvious with backing track.
Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 3 2015, 04:54 PM

Interesting! So, you need to do this work more often because it's not only a training for your alternate picking, and technique in general, it's also an ear training. You need to train your ear to recognize this timing issues while you play them. Please keep on doing this kind of exercises over metronome, check the audio wave, and also feel free to share samples here.

Posted by: petr May 3 2015, 06:01 PM

Hi Gab,
yes that's what I do with the AP lesson - I record a take and then check the waves.

I also still work on the Voice lesson
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/voice20150503

Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 4 2015, 03:36 PM

Nice take mate. There are two main things two improve on this one.

The first one is an old problem. You reach the 8th fret after the slide (first two measures) a bit late. Please check the second 00:03 on the original video and notice how Cosmin reaches the 8th fret of the slide before the 1 beat of measure 2. This is repeated every time the phrase is repeated.

Besides this, I notice that your bending technique is not bad but it could be more consistent. Most of the times you reach the pitch, but it's not totally smooth, while other times you are close but not there, so pay attention to it.

Posted by: petr May 5 2015, 09:04 PM

Hi Gab,
the detail you pointed out on the Voice lesson seems hard to correct because I think i just dont hear the difference. I will focus on the bending and will try again, lets see ...

https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/voice20150505

Here is the AP lesson at full speed. i know it is not clean but at least the timing seems ok on the waves in Cubase, is that right?

https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/ap20150505

tx Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 6 2015, 03:17 PM

Hi Petr, both lesson show improvements. The alternate picking sounds much tighter than in the past, it only has some little details but it's very good, well done! The other one is closer, both bending and the part that I marked are closer to the original. I think that a good way to notice the difference between the original and your playing could be noted if you open both takes on cubase, set the tempo to the lesson, put each track on a different channel and compare when the note is sounding on each one. You will notice the difference by using the timeline and other instruments as reference. I'm not sure if this is possible but maybe you could ask Bogdan to see if he can share with you the main video's audio.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 18 2015, 03:35 PM

Hi Petr, how are you?

This is evolving well. There are some moments that require more attention like:

at 00:56: The palm muted pattern is not totally tight.
1:45: This part and some other more melodic ideas are a bit sloppy, you need to train your alternate picking technique.
1:55: This trash metal rhythm is not completely tight yet.

Isolate and work on these parts during this week and share a new take in 7 days, ok?

You can complement your practice with this lesson: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/I-got-rhythm-guitar2-palm-muting/

Hi mate! Welcome back!

Good playing on this cover! Just be careful with timing in the part from 00:52 to 01:47. and also the part that starts at 01:47, that requires palm muting and for any reason your picking is not consistent there. Try to emulate the accentuation and tightness that Metallica gives to this part. More aggression and a precise accentuation.

Other than that this sounds good. Keep on rocking.

Hi Gab,

I could not use my method to associate each interval with a song, it seems that songs dont start with minor intervals.... so I had to use the guitar for a help
Petr

 A8.txt ( 61bytes ) : 142

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 20 2015, 03:56 PM

Hi Petr, the intervals are totally correct.

There is a lot of music writing with minor scales. Here are some examples that I use:

2m:

3m:

7m - 6m: (in the intro of this song, the first note is E, then bass goes to the 7m and then to the 6m).

One thing that will help is to learn to sing the minor scales. Practice them with guitar, and then without guitar to get used to the minor intervals. Practice every day and you'll get used.

I still keep working on the Voice lesson, please can you check it?

Here is my Cubase setting, would you have any suggestion on that as well?

Thanks Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 3 2015, 02:48 PM

Hi mate, great to hear from you.

The take is not bad, it's getting better but you still need to practice more to get more comfortable with bending, vibrato and adjust a bit tempo. The solo needs to sound deeper, and this can be achieved with more focus on expression techniques as the ones marked and also dynamics.

The tone isn't helping with this, I think that it could be better if it sounds warmer. I'm a bit lost with the Ignite software, where are the head amp settings? gain, eq, etc? I cannot see them in the image share.

Posted by: petr Sep 3 2015, 03:18 PM

Hi Gab,

I got the Ignite software here http://www.igniteamps.com/en/audio-plug-ins
but to be honest I dont know much about recording and plugins, it is just random setting which i did there.

I tried some amp simulators which you suggested in this thread
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=52512

but i got strange results with a lot of noise etc.

Please could you suggest some setup for this lesson?
Here is part of my recording without any plugin if that is of any help

Hi Petr, I think that you are not using a cabinet on the tone that you've sent by zip. Please check this video:

Are you using the KeFir besides the poulin head?

Posted by: petr Sep 4 2015, 03:02 PM

Hi Gab,
yes, I sent the tone without any plugin, just in case you wanted to try and apply one.

Hi mate, everything is clearly explained in the video. Please check it and let me know if it clarifies it.

Hi mate, everything is clearly explained in the video. Please check it and let me know if it clarifies it.

Hi Gab,
Ok so from that video I see that I should use the cab simulator and then the impulse loader in the chain.
I tried that with the take of the Rhythm figures lesson
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/rf20150906
first i tried the Le456 but the default Cubase AmpSimulator seemed to me to give better result.
Still the sound is nowhere close the one from original lesson.
Here is the setting

Do you see anything wrong with it?

Regarding the take - I know you suggested to keep practicing this one, but Im bit behind the tasks of the "Improvisation workout" so I need to spend more time there. So Im thinking to send it to the REC zone smile.gif just to see if I can tick that off and move on to something else. Your Iron Maiden lesson (as we discussed in the timing workout thread) gives me hard time for too long smile.gif

thanks Petr

Please replace NaIR by LeCab. Youy can download it from this site: http://lepouplugins.blogspot.com.ar/

and then try opening this impulse on lecab:  2off_preshigh.zip ( 2.67K ) : 126

Also, what's that plug in in between poulin and nair called amp simulator? Is it activated?

Posted by: petr Sep 7 2015, 10:00 PM

Hi Gab,
thanks for that, I loaded the impulse to naDIR and here is how it sounds with Le456

https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/rf20150906a-1

The LeCab did not work because I have windows 64 and Cubase did not load it. The same with prob with Kefir.
The naDIR seems the only free impulse loader available for win 64.

The plug in called "amp simulator" was not active. It is the default amp simulator which was part of the instalation of my Cubase AI (some cheaper Cubase version which i got with my soundcard)

Ok! I think that it's ok now. I would tweak a bit the EQ of this one to make it sound with more bass frequencies and less "trebbly". Do you think that the plug ins are working well now? Have you tried what happens when you turn on distortion?

Posted by: petr Sep 8 2015, 01:30 PM

Hi Gab,
yes I will adjust the bass and treble setting.
I think the plugins are working fine also with distortion.
Thanks Petr

Hi Gab,
I would have another questions about recording. Do you know why I have such bad sound every time I pick the strings? Is it me using the pick incorrectly? or recording?

Check it here
recording - no plugins
 voice1dry.mp3 ( 279.18K ) : 81

recording - pouling LeGion and some impulse
 voice1.mp3 ( 279.18K ) : 78

Also there is A LOT of noise when i do not play
 noise.mp3 ( 198.37K ) : 78

Here is my Cubase

My setup is
guitar goes to Blackstar HT5,
from there from Speaker output 1x8Ohm to Steinberg UR12 external soundcard
from there to PC USB

Thanks for any advice.

Also - I really appreciate your new "Guitar Gym" workout, i will definitely follow it but Im not officially joining smile.gif because Im already behind the pace of the Ear training and Improvisation one. So I will follow, but with some delay smile.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 9 2015, 03:04 PM

Hi Petr,

The signal noise can be related to many things. Your electrical connection, the cables that you are using, your soundcard, and your guitar electronics. The first experiment that you could do is changing cables and trying with another guitar. There is a way to mute your signal while you are not playing and it's done with a noise gate. It can make things more comfortable but if it can also affect your tone's sustain. Try it, you must have a plug in called "gate", or "noise gate".

The pick noise is related to the EQ, your current settings are enhancing some frequencies where the sound of the pick is. You can try lowering presence, treble, and maybe some drive and see what happens. Using a lighter pick can help, and also trying with other amp.

Hi Gab,
just a quick question regarding the picking direction adjusted to a rhythm.
Ben did not like it on my REC take
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?&showtopic=54899&mode=show&st=0
but I think even Stephane does that on the original lesson, so i assume it could be fine doing so,
what would you say?
It helped me a lot on the rhythm from you Iron lesson as discussed here
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=54317&st=160&start=160

thanks Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 13 2015, 11:31 PM

Hi Petr,

Ben comments is based on the fact that the lesson is a good excuse to practice alternate picking. However it's your decision to work on this using your own picking directions. There are lots of different opinions about this and guitarists with different i approaches to this kind of licks.
Gilbert would use alternate picking, Gambale would use your way of playing it (economy picking), while Petrucci would use both depending on the sound he want to get...

So, once again, you are not doing it wrong, you are not doing it as in the lesson and that's what Ben marks.

Hi Gab,
pls can you check this take

is it any better or should I just leave this lesson for later?

thanks Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 23 2015, 02:52 PM

Hi mate, there are basically two things to adjust on this one: timing and bending.

As you've been working for many time on this lesson I consider that it would be great to forget it by now and work on some new stuff. There is a timing issue on the first phrases that we never could fix so I prefer that you keep on training your playing and ear and get back in many months to see if your ear gets more precise to identify the difference between your take and the original one.

It's time for some free air, what do you think?

Hi Gab,

as you suggested i was working on something else, now returned to the Voice lesson , please can you check the bends?

I have been working for a long time on your Iron lesson, but still have problems with timing. Would you have any suggestion how to approach it?

Thanks Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 8 2015, 02:40 PM

Hi Petr, great to hear from you here.

The lessons are evolving well. The Voice lesson's bends are getting better but there are still bends that are not reaching the correct pitch. You should add some bending practice into your diary routine. I think that I've shared some exercises for this but let me know if you need them again.

Iron Maiden lesson sounds good! I don't find really dramatic timing issues on this take. I notice that you aren't totally comfortable with the parts yet, but this is on the right track!

Hi Petr, thanks for the update!

I've checked both audios and I can say that the main issue on both is timing. However, the problem is more important in the slower version. Your timing is a bit closer at normal tempo. I recommend you to keep on practicing at both tempos and focus on not rushing timing when playing at slow bpm.

Please also isolate the different parts to work on each of them as a loop to be able to focus on each at a time.

Keep on the hard work!

Hi Gab,

Hi Petr! This take sounds good! Most of the bends are sounding well! Please keep on practicing this lesson to make those bends sound more natural and smoother. You are on the right track!

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 12 2016, 04:31 PM

Hi Petr! Great job!

I notice improvements on two elements that needed your attention: bending & timing.

Both lessons sound tighter and the first one shows that you are not reaching the correct pitches with your bending technique! Congratulations. Timing still has room to improvement in the second lesson (Maiden style) so please keep the current tempo and focun on going tighter with the backing track.

I also think that maybe you'll need to renew your current practice plan to avoid getting bored. What do you think?

Posted by: petr Jan 12 2016, 09:37 PM

Hi Gab,
thanks for that.

I hope you made a typo and it should be "you are NOW reaching the correct pitches". rolleyes.gif

I wrote down to a file the things from my daily practice. I usually practice one to two hours a day, more on weekends, so I will need to alternate the tasks because it seems like 3 hours together.

 guitarPractice.zip ( 7.66K ) : 83

Please let me know what you think. May be I will need to add more minutes to some (to spend more time on them) and remove others.

Thanks Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 14 2016, 12:31 AM

Ups! Yes! I tried to say "NOW" laugh.gif

I've checked the routine and it looks good. It covers many different aspects and will keep you moving. I recommend you to experiment for two weeks with it and then decide if maybe you prefer covering less topics each day, more time. This is different for each person so you need to experiment.

Posted by: petr Feb 2 2016, 11:27 PM

Hi Gab,

I have spent the recent weeks on the tasks from the schedule which I shared last time.
Here is some report of what I really worked on with estimate percentage of the practice time

Speed building - 30%
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/chro-allstrings-130
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/hand-sync

Gab - Iron - 15% with not much progress
Laszlo - Orion - 20%
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/orion20160202

Minor penta all positions - 15% - I can now play random notes while changing the boxes
Other 20%

I think I will continue for some time on these tasks to get them more close to the desired result.
What would you suggest?

thanks Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 3 2016, 02:54 PM

Hi Petr, thanks for the update.

This works are on the right track but you need to keep on practicing. I recommend trying to focus on playing things effortless and perfect so please slow down tempo and be sure that everything sounds good before you increase timing.

I think that the chromatic exercise is not flowing smoothly, and Metallica's cover gives me a similar sensation.

Besides this works, I think that a solo lesson that covers bending, vibrato and dynamics could be a good addition, do you have any in mind?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 15 2016, 03:46 PM

Hi Petr,

Maiden's lesson has some timing issues and the reason seems that you are not comfortable with a rhythm idea that it repeats in the whole lesson. The fact that the changes are done a bit before the beat. This happens in the whole lesson but you will note the issue easily if you check the power chord part and how you are changing after the bass guitar. Please work over the guitar pro file, with the metronome on and pay attention to the changes.

Orion is on the right track but you have to polish the sound of each riff starting with the first one. It sound too muted and seems to have little pitch issues.

Check the first riff here:

Note how muted notes and not muted triads sound clear and defined. Try to emulate it.

Posted by: petr Feb 22 2016, 11:14 AM

Hi Gab,
for the Maiden lesson I spent some time playing the chords part as 16th notes on one string. So lets see if it is any better now
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/im20160221

For Orion im not sure if Im really muting too much or if it is just bad sound because of recording.
Here is another one with different equalizer setting
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/orion20160220

Im using the emulated output from Blackstar HT5 so I can not apply any amp simulator in Cubase because i have already distorted sound. I will look at some option to use channel splitter or so to be able to record clean sound.

Thanks Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 23 2016, 02:05 PM

Hi mate, both things are better but still need more work.

Maiden's lesson rhythm is better, you are not trying to play before the beat as you should but it's still not smooth and sometimes it's not at tempo. You need more practice and also to listen the original with more attention to get familiar with the rhythm.

Orion sound a bit better but you are still muting too much the double string parts. Check again the audio that I've shared and also check some how to play videos at youtube, it will really help.

Posted by: petr Apr 23 2016, 08:43 PM

Hi Gab,
I tried the follow the suggestions from you and the other instructors after my REC of Orion,
please can you check it here?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 25 2016, 05:16 AM

Well, I think that this new take shows improvements on the different elements that we've marked previously. However, I still think that that you have room to improve those things, even the main riff which sounds a bit clearer but not as the original. Please keep on working on it, try to make the low strings triads sound stronger.

Hi Petr, good! This is going on the right track. Please continue practising in order to polish the whole lesson since it will be very helpful for your playing.

The take has some timing issues here and there, some unwanted noises that also some chords and/or riff that aren't sounding clear. Some moments that need special attention are at 00:10, 00:20, 00:29 and the sliding power chords starting at 00:46.

Hi Gab,
the long term goals - I would say to be able to play covers and improvise.
Short term - Learning all modes patterns.

Lessons:

Rhythm

ASSIGNMENT #1:

Goals:

- Improving your bending technique.
- Incorporating bending into your phrasing.

TASK 1:

- Work on this lesson: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Beginner-Bending-Workout/

TASK 2:

- Use https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hh_pYY6UYIw to practice bending technique over the backing of Beginner Bending Workout.
- Improvise over the same backing, focusing mostly on bending.

Exam and deadline:

By July 30th you'll have to share 3 videos:

- A video playing beginner bending workout (4 coins)
- A video applying Ben's video approach over the backing track (2 coins)
- A video improvising over the backing focusing on bending technique (4 coins)

Each of this videos will be evaluated (check the coins value below). You need to get at least 7 coins to pass. If you pass, we can continue, if you don't you will have a second "call".

Hi Gab,
it looks that I wont be able to post much this week. The skin on my fingers really hurt from practicing it, mainly on the middle finger which does most of the long held bends (yes do use the other fingers for support). But I will keep going, just bit slower, I understand that the lesson has really useful patterns.
Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jul 28 2016, 08:08 PM

Ok, this sounds reasonable. Intensive bending practice can be demanding for our fingers so this is normal. Let's extend the deadline some more days, ok?

Posted by: petr Aug 1 2016, 10:52 PM

Hi Gab,
thanks for the response. The skin is slowly getting harder so I could record at least something, not the entire lesson yet but I keep working on it. biggrin.gif

Hi mate, this is promising. You are on the right track.

What do you think if we extend the deadline to august 12th?

Hi Gab,
I have seen you comments for my take in the REC, thanks for that.

Regarding the task
"- Use https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hh_pYY6UYIw to practice bending technique over the backing of Beginner Bending Workout."

I was not sure how to do it over backing track, for now I uploaded the following video.

Im trying to do the improvisation but I have nothing worth posting yet ...

Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 8 2016, 01:44 PM

Hi Petr, this is on the right track. If you want to use a backing track you can do the same thing but using the scale of the backing. It's just to make it more entertained. Please keep this exercise in your diary practice (around 5/10 minutes).

Posted by: petr Aug 13 2016, 12:08 PM

Hi Gab,
I actually spent all my practice time on it, about hour a day. Here is another take...

Im still working on the improvisation, will try to post at least something later

Hi Petr! I'm having an issue with Youtube videos at the forum. Could you please past the direct link to that video here?

Posted by: petr Aug 15 2016, 05:20 PM

Hi Gab,
it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMW-Cg7ttNc

Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 15 2016, 07:51 PM

Hey Petr! Good job with the bending lesson!

I think that your practice is giving really good results. I think that 70% of the bends are reaching the correct pitch, and most of the ones that aren't are ok when you repeat them on this one. For example, the first time you do the double string bend, it doesn't sound on pitch, but then as the idea is repeated to make it sound more and more precise.

So this means that you just need to continue practising in order to make your bending technique more regular. You just need to make it more and more natural, and this will happen with diary practice.

Keep the hard work!

Posted by: petr Aug 17 2016, 11:16 PM

Hi Gab,

so here are some takes to share:

- just another take of the bending lesson
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/bending20160817?in=petr-14/sets/20160517a

- then I recorded a take of the Voice lesson just to see if I can still play it smile.gif
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/voice201600817?in=petr-14/sets/20160517a

- the improvisation over bending lesson
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/impro20160817?in=petr-14/sets/20160517a

I know it is not perfect but i feel I need to move to something else, getting bit bored on this one smile.gif

Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 18 2016, 11:41 PM

Ok! We can consider assignment 1 passed with 7 coins. The bending lesson sounds very good, it only has some timing issues but the bends are really good! The voice lesson shows issues on most of the bends, it's weird. The improvisation is ok, for any reason it reflects some boredom vibes... maybe because you are getting bored of this assignment! hahah laugh.gif

Let's move forward!

ASSIGNMENT #2:

Goals:

- A minor scale improvisation.
- Expressing techniques

TASK 1:

- Work on this lesson: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Simple-Aminor-Soloing/

TASK 2:

- Improvise of the backing of that lesson using A minor scale all over the neck. Use slides, bending, vibrato and different dynamics.

Exam and deadline:

By August 30th you'll have to share 2 videos:

- A video playing Simple A minor Soloing (5 coins)
- A video improvising over the backing track (5 coins)

Each of this videos will be evaluated (check the coins value below). You need to get at least 7 coins to pass. If you pass, we can continue, if you don't you will have a second "call".

Posted by: petr Aug 19 2016, 02:34 PM

Hi Gab,
thanks for that, I will do my best. But I usually work on lessons level 2 for couple of weeks, so I do not think I can do level 4 that quickly :-) Actually i have not done any level 4 yet smile.gif

Posted by: petr Aug 31 2016, 11:16 PM

Hi Gab,
I decided to go with the Ami soloing lesson, it seems to be a logical continuing for the previous bending lesson and improvisation.
As first step I worked on each part individually, checked the timing, picking and the details which Darius pointed out.
Now I recorded a slow take of the entire lesson played over Darius's track, just to show you where I am. I know there are many issues, I just wanted to share something, it has been a while since I have started on it.

Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 1 2016, 02:11 PM

Hi Petr! I think that you have done the right choice going for the original suggestion. I think that this is going much better than what you've expected. This starts to sound tight at this tempo, and that's very promising. Another wise idea is to practice it over the original take, since it really helps as a guide for your timing and bending.

I could consider this assignment passed, but I feel that it would be better if you dedicate 1 week more to this lesson, what do you think?
I don't mean that you'll master it at normal tempo in one week, but I think that you will be able to keep it in your diary practice and then start on a new task.

Posted by: petr Sep 1 2016, 03:07 PM

Hi Gab,
of course I would like to stay on it with the aim to pass with it on the REC section.
What you are saying makes perfect sense. So I will spend another week on it and then we will adjust my practice schedule, I think I should include some rhythm lesson.
In the last month since the first assignment I have tried something new to me anyway - dedicate entire practice time to one thing only.
Also I did not forget about the improvisation for this backing, Im working on it smile.gif

Thanks,
Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 3 2016, 03:44 PM

Hi Petr! Good job man! This is getting close! Please continue practicing with this elements in mind:

- Bending (Be careful of the pitches)
- Timing (There are some moments in which you are not going tight with the backing)
- Vibrato

I think that now that you know the rhythm of each phrase, you could start practising this one a bit also over the backing track.

Posted by: petr Sep 6 2016, 12:06 AM

Hi Gab,
I thought I would share a video so you can see where I'm. I know the bend at 0:52 is bad )-:

Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 6 2016, 06:27 PM

Hi mate, great to see you playing this one over the backing track. I can detect the same issues than in the previous version, but this time it was trickier since you didn't have the reference of the instructor.

Once again, there are many bends (not only the one at 00:52) that aren't reaching the perfect pitch, and there are timing issues, mostly with the phrases that connect melodies (faster parts). This are the two main thing to improve, then finally vibrato.

Keep on the hard work!

Posted by: petr Sep 8 2016, 10:31 PM

Hi Gab,
here is another one, after spending a lot of time on it Im unsure if it is any better.

Edit:
I just posted another take to the REC, far from being perfect but I think I need to work on something else at least for while smile.gif

Thanks Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 10 2016, 05:46 PM

Hi Petr! Yes, this new take shows improvements regarding timing and the pitch of your bends. There is more room to work on this one but I think that it's ok to start with new stuff. You can keep this one in your diary practice, and play it once or twice every day just to don't forget it and slowly polish it.

Hi Gab,
please can you check this take of the Metal for beginners lesson?

Thanks Petr

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 1 2016, 01:43 AM

Hi mate, this sounds better but there is still work to do in order to adjust timing issues (small ones at 0:08, 0:10, 0:13, 0:27, etc) and also make some riffs starting at 00:53, and from there to the end, sound clearer. I think that there are fingers pressure and / or hands sync issues in this parts.

By the way, this problems are much smaller now, so I think that you are getting closer.

Keep on the good job.

Hi Gab,

A lot better mate! This one has some little timing issues here and there (for example at 00:49, and at 00:52) and you also need to make the last riff sound tighter, since it sounds a bit sloppy. The overall is much better, congrats.

Hi Petr! This is on the right track. There are many things to adjust, but many things that are sounding good! Here are some elements to have in mind during the next days of practice:

- There are some bends that are not reaching the right pitch. On the other hand, there are many of them that are sounding perfect, so this is not a general thing, just a 30% of the bends need adjustment.

- The same thing happens with timing, there are some specific moments in which your timing is not precise (for example at 00:33 / 00:53), while it's good in most of the lesson. However, I also hear details to fix regarding timing in many parts so it's one of the elements that needs more work.

- The natural harmonics are not sounding clean.

- There are some unwanted noises in two parts. It seems that you pick strings that shouldn't be played.

That's all by know, keep on working!

Hi Petr,

I compared both takes. There some little improvement regarding how fluently the licks sound in the newest video. I can notice that you are a bit more comfortable with some of the most melodic licks, however the things that showed problems, still have problems on this new take.

It's been 2 months since the previous take so I'd like to know how much time per day you've worked on this one, and how you organised your practice, in order to help you to plan the next guitar sessions, even if we decide to go for a new lesson.

Hi Gab,

I would say I spent about 15 minutes a day on it for a month, but prior the recording it was at least 2 hours.

My current practice is about a hour to 1.5 hour a day, usually
- improvisation , 15 min
- Orion solo https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Metallica-Orion-First-Solo/ , 15 min
- RHCP Californication , 15 min
- SOAD Aerials , 15 min
- returning to songs I tried in the past without solos (Crazy train, The Hunt, Crystal Mountain, Orion riff)

Hi Petr,

It's good to see that your routine puts you on a real band situation and it's based on songs, and improvisation. As you also want to adjust your lead guitar playing, I think that dedicating some blocks to technique could be a good idea.

The techniques that need work are:

- Bending
- Vibrato
- Alternate Picking
- Legato

I think that you can group this in two: bending + vibrato, AP ยด+ Legato and dedicate 15/20 minutes to each block.

Thanks Petr

Hi Petr, I can see improvement on this take. The next step should be to try to be able to play the whole thing more relaxed so this will make you play the parts with more groove and dynamics.

The techniques and elements that needed work are getting better, so you are going on the right direction.
