Hi Nate an welcome to GMC.
2 years of playing are not too much imho and all those problems that you have atm are pretty natural, focused practicing and time shall fix all that, no worries. I do have couple of ideas and hints for you but I'm leaving for rehearsal right now so I'm gonna update this thread tonight when I get back home, ok? -------------------- Youtube

sounds great, i would really appreciate it alot. Thanks so much!! You are very welcome and here are some thoughts. Main thing is discipline! Discipline can be applied in many directions tho, what do you practice, how often and HOW do you practice. This last how is most important imo and here's why. You said that you can reach certain bpms with picking and then it collapse. No need to think of bpms and speed in that way for now, speed comes with time and practicing. Sooner or later you'll find out that some slower lick are much more harder to play compared to some faster licks, it's note orders, fingering etc, not just speed. What you should think of all the time is to keep your playing clean. No matter what do you play or practicing, if you hear it sounds sloppy or you can't synchronize your hands then slow it down at once! Play it slow and pay attention on what causes you the problems, sometimes it's just one pick stroke that comes like unpredicted, repeat that pick stroke several times, clean it up and try faster, and faster and faster, you can go faster as much as you want but once you notice it's getting sloppy, slow it down and look for error. That kind of discipline will help you the most imo, self criticism is very healthy if you want to progress. Now, what I would appreciate a lot is if you could show me one or few videos of you playing some solos, licks or whatever. Maybe I can help you with technique as well but I need to see it first. -------------------- Youtube

thank you agian https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PctY07u2Gp8 |

Hi and sorry for delay, I was out of town for 2 days.
OK, so first of all those few scales you played where not Bm, B major etc, you played C#m, C# major etc. To get B scales you would need to move the whole thing 2 frets down but that ain't the problem tho, that's too easy to fix! Your picking is what needs more work actually and I spotted in nicely in video, it was not AP but more like Economy Picking. Plus you seem to pick a lot from fingers and elbow and NOT from wrist. Imho (many would agree as well I hope) playing from the wrist is what would give you the most in long term! I use to lay the top of my palm on the top of the bridge, that's slightly rest tho, nothing radical. So that way a have a good stand for my wrist while I can still do all wrist motions without any problem. Then the rest your right hand fingers, you have them open wide, sometimes you even anchor with them on guitar body. I would rather curve them a little if not close the fist entirely. Anchoring fingers like that can really block your picking! So try to fix your right hand posture if possible, I know it's gonna be kind a hard in the beginning just like any changes we make but you'll gain a lot from it, trust me. And keep your picking from the wrist! -------------------- Youtube

that all makes sense to me. i think when i first started i sort of anchord those fingers on the body to help my pick be able to find the correct string and then with me doing it like that it just kinda of stuck. so i will def work on that. the economy picking thing i def new i did, i tend to sort of mess up my own picking from time to time doing it, it just always kind of came natural for me to do it that way. so i should stop doing that and really concentrate on doing nothing but alternate picking?? and then one other thing .... are there any lessons on here or excercises i could do that would help me out? Alternate picking is kind of solid base for all other picking variations, economy, sweep, hybrid etc. You don't need to stop playing economy but just pay more attention to alternate from now on, latter on you'll be able to mix them all nicely regarding of situation and licks that you're about to play. For practicing you can use just about any exercise that you've done so far, or simply practice scales up and down the neck using pure alternate picking. Here are few lesson that I've done covering alternate picking. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...n-speed-bursts/ https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...ernate-picking/ https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...upstroke-focus/ https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...-picking-etude/ https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...ernate-workout/ Some of those lessons are probably too hard to play them at full speed but you don't have to do that, take those examples and practice them slowly, keep things clean and accurate, speed will come. Feel free to ask if you need anything else whatsoever. -------------------- Youtube

muris thank you so much. i guess ill get to work and ill keep in touch as things start to come along. i played for awhile today and with the combination of changing my right hand posture along with how i alternate pick with the wrist more than i used to with my fingers ... lets just say its pretty awkward. but ill get it. thanks again!!! It is awkward first time you change it but it'll become natural, give it some time. And record new vids with new posture if you can so I could help you further! -------------------- Youtube

ok muris
im a bit of a work horse so i pretty much just starting workin fast as i could and havnt really stopped. im pretty sure my right hand posture and alternate picking are now on the right path, it still feels very very weird but then again its only been a couple days haha i took a look at the alternate picking lessons that you showed me, but its kinda hard to try to learn a lesson that you can barely play at half speed if that at all. so i think im going to take the five lessons you have showed me and have them almost be like my goals for now ... not exactly short term i know, but goals are goals right lol i found a lesson that seemed to have the things i needed to practice .... Little Finger Work-out, by Dejan Farkas .... and even tho i cant quite play all the 16th notes up to speed at 100 bpm .. it still is a good excercise for me i think but i guess you can determine that. i recorded it twice ... once and 60 bpm and then again at 80 ... and yes i know the 80 bpm is a little fast for me right now and i dont usually play it that fast , i just wanted you to see what happens cuz with this peice its about my breaking point ... its where i start to miss notes and things get real sloppy. anyways .. hope to hear from you soon ... thank you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOMf0UniCZE |

Wow, your picking hand looks much better now, bravo!!
Still, you are doing motions from the elbow and not from the wrist, pay more attention to that if you can. Picking from elbow takes lot of time and energy, wrist picking is far more economic. And try to move whole hand more toward bridge, like if want to do palm muting, almost in the same position. Regarding Little Finger Workout, you played it really nice, it was clean, descent take and good in time. But I noticed one thing, you started it with an upstroke on B string which made you playing "outside picking" all the time. You use upstroke on B string and next note you need to play is on high E, so your hand goes up while next string in actually down, that's outside and people usually try to avoid that. Try the same thing starting with downstroke, it'll be much easier. -------------------- Youtube

this is a neoclassical solo by emir hot ... i tried to focus on using my wrist wrather than my arm but after looking at the video i didnt really do as well as i thought i did. its something im really going to have to focus on. also there is a section in the solo that looks like this ...
|--3--| E E E E E E E E Q E E S S S E E -------------------------------------|-----------------------------------| -------------------------------------|-----------------------------------| --11--12--9--12------12------12--|-----------------------------------| --------------------12------11------|--9-------5--4h-5p-4------------| -------------------------------------|-------------------------7--5--4--| -------------------------------------|-----------------------------------| on the first section with my ring finger on the 12th fret of the G string, when i move to the 12th fret of the D string should i roll my ring finger? play both notes on both strings with the same finger? i kept my ring finger on the 12th fret of the G and used my middle finger for the 12th on the D ... but it felt weird both ways .. and i wasnt sure what was correct. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybBqBEoCaB8 |

I see, the pedal tone thing.
It's your fingering that causes you the problems. You should use your pinky for G string 12th all the time, that way you'll have ring finger free to play 11th on G plus 12th and 11th on D. It would the the same fingering like Emir's actually. Btw, nicely played, sweet feel! This post has been edited by Muris Varajic: Aug 20 2009, 12:47 AM -------------------- Youtube
