Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Beginner Legato & Tapping by Darius Wave

Hey GMC! Final or semi final Level 2 lesson in the pursuit of building a good foundation with all soloing techniques before moving on to Level 3. I've never tapped before except for an exercise in Todd's Journey! I really like tapping and Legato! Hope you enjoy!

For not having tapped before you are doing quite well!! There are a bunch more Tapping bits upcoming in BOOTCAMP so you will be getting some more practice for sure!!! As for this one, you have a good handle on the mechanics of tapping and a good handle on the muting involved which is very important. You are not "cheating" with a fret wrap below the nut, or a sock wrapped around the fretboard as I've seen some folks resort to on youtube because they just don't have proper muting ability. String noise is at a minimum which is good news. Also you have very clean strikes with both hands. The only niggle I have with this is that there are bits where timing is not spot on. This is only natural as you are still new to tapping and I'm sure it will smooth out. It is most pronounced about 29 seconds in. This is a tough part where you are traveling and tapping and there is no gap in between to let your hands land on the right mark. However, I don't think it's enough for me to keep you from moving on to the next thing, although I'd say this aspect could use more work and some repetition. It's a 7 from me!!

Todd

Hi George!

Nice tapping! There are many positive things in this video. The first one is that your timing is consistent in most of the take and that's not a small thing. Playing tight tapping + legato licks is not an easy thing and I have to say that you only have a few moments in which your timing is not tight.

Another positive thing here is that your tapping and legato is consistent. All the notes sound clear and with the right volume. There are not weak or missed notes here.

If you ask me about the issues here, I think that these are very small and are related to some unwanted noises here and there (like the one at 00:29 or 00:36), and those very little timing details, like the ones at 00:29).

Congrats!

Very well done!

As mentioned you have it down with muting & precision. With only a few minor misses.

You could also think about being even more relaxed in your hands (this is something I still work on - on a daily basis)

Well done - you get an 8 from me!

Hey George!

In general my observation on timing is definitely one - you need more time. Whne there are moments you arre confident how to play, your timing is tight and even the muting job goes well. Unfortunately in the part where the taps go on the weak beats, then you go quite out of sync. To find a general issue name for this I would go for a little more practise thing simply. Your hands shaping and mechanics looks really nice. You do the pull offs and put some force into them so your left hand works properly. Try to be more carefull with right palm. Hold it steady as long as possible because once you loose a contact with strings for a moment, some of unwanted noise bleeds out. Next time please try to make more zoomed video - maybe something more would come out by seeing your hands smile.gif
