GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Challenge Yourself Competition

'Challenge Yourself' Competition
Yes - it is time for a new GMC competition!
Challenge rules :
1. Pick a lesson from the http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/video-lessons/ featuring a music style you have never really played/practiced much. 2. Record a video of yourself playing the lesson 3. Upload your take to Youtube and post the link in this thread to enter the competition
Instructions :
* Recording should be done in audio/video format. Must be a brand new recording, specifically recorded for this occasion.
* You can record any lesson from the archive as long as long as it is not your favorite style of music. For example : metal guitarist taking on a blues, funk or country lesson. Same with rock/blues guitarists - maybe time for some black metal?
* Lesson difficulty doesn't matter at all, please pick a lesson which feels comfortable, doable and cool sounding to You! In fact - it would be great if you could try to match the lesson difficulty with your own current level.
* Winner will be chosen by instructor Cosmin Lupu with the help of GMC Staff and based on the impression we get from the videos, performances, lesson topic chosen etc.
Deadline : 25th of December
THE PRIZE :
Days Of Confusion - SEEDS EP signed by Cosmin Lupu + signature guitar pick
We hope that this challenge will inspire you to learn new licks from other genres you wouldn't normally be practicing and that you will have lots of fun learning them!
Who is in?

I did a take of this:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Slide-Rock/
I never tried sliding like this before, and it was fun to learn.
I put together a video in Windows Movie Maker, and even wore my red christmas hat, but I cannot convert it and save it as a movie. Seems like Movie Maker is not working, as it can not convert other simpler movies!

Maybe try converting the source video files to something Windows Movie Maker "likes" - like .wmv.

Thank you for the converter link. The problem was that one (or more) of the videos I used were bad, but now it works.
I would not say it is good enough for the REC program yet, but ok considering I never used the slide tube before this wednesday. Still some unwanted noise and some old strings.

Alrighty ladies and gents! It's time to announce the Challenge Yourself Competition's winner!
Let's review the takes together first:
Jessi - ladies first Your timing is excellent and it really looks like you have made progress! Remember how in the beginning you couldn't shift chords? Now not only that you shift chords but you also groove Congratulations!
smolentsev - Top notch man! This looks and sounds totally rad to me! I like this sort of playing, even though I am not a practitioner and I can say you did a great job through and through!
Ulrik - This is a very good effort! Slide playing is not easy and it needs a certain degree of accuracy which you focused on pretty good out of what this takes shows. Nice going mate!
Opetholic - Hey there amigo I know you very well and I know what you usually tend to play This is pretty darn out of your comfort zone and I think you did a good job covering it - tone wise, feel, timing! Very good!
DeGroot - Awesomeness! Great tone and interpretation My friend, I think you can do a good job covering more stuff than you know
Bas Cuthach - Hey Bas! As you said, slow bends are pretty difficult at first, especially if you haven't had to deal with them before, but this is a good start! Practicing them will help you develop a good bending technique and a whole new level of self expression on your instrument!
maharzan - Chandra, I think your take is good and despite your worries, it turned out great Please check the guitar tuning a bit and everything should be well
Rammikin - You have clearly surprised me with this take - far away from the usual stuff you like to play. Focus a little bit more on the timing and the roundness of the notes, to fit the atmosphere of the style even better!
Well, these were the takes and considering the boldness, artistry and ambition, it's a pretty hard decision BUT, I think the prize should go to ... Smolentsev! In my opinion, he chose a difficult style which had absolutely NOTHING to do with what he has done before and it looks like he has worked a lot to provide this take! Plus.... I CAN'T GET THAT GROOVE OUT OF MY HEAD! Joking aside, he did justice to the piece and transmitted the message - what more could you ask for?
Congratulations to you mate!! Congratulations to everyone else and believe me, this was HARD - you all did an amazing job!!
Until the next one stay focus and practice hard... after the Christmas food coma is over, as Patrik berg would say !
Cosmin

I think I will try some more slide after this. A good challenge
Posted by: smolentsev Dec 26 2012, 01:19 PM
Wow! What a wonderful surprise! I'm happy so much!
Thanks Cosmin for your feedback! You right - that style was completely new for me. Every evening from 4th to the 21th I practiced this lesson. I started with slow tempo (about half) and it was not sound good enough. My girlfriend had to hear all those slap sounds and I guess she wasn’t happy But then it all began to sound good, I started to increase the tempo and until I finally reach the 100% speed. I did not expect that I would succeed so quickly and now I’m really happy now.
Thanks everyone who took part in this competition! I hope you're not too upset that I won Enjoy Christmas and New Year!
Artyom.

Congratulations Smolentsev! between you and me: I knew that you would be the winner. although the others are very good, but yours is such special . Have fun with the price and it' s tradition to post a picture with your "days of confusion" shirt!
thanks to my instructor Mr Cosmin for always having such pushing words! And thanks to the GMC Daddy Bogdan for making this competition! I haven't gone through to win, just to challenge myself. Even to be a Rockerbraut It was fun!!!

Congratulations Smolentsev and everyone entering the challenge!
This was so much fun and its so cool to see you pushing your limits and horizons by practicing something completely different! All the takes were excellent so I bet Cosmin had a real hard time choosing the winning one
