When playing the amp, it sounds much more open and wide. recorded it gets very compressed and kinda muddy, even though I reduced the gain quite alot. Maybe I should try with the mic seated a bit away from the cloth of the amp? Now it is about 2 cm from the center of the cone. I'm happy with the clean though, apart from the peaks. No "room" like when you play live. If you had a 2nd mic back in the room to pick that up it would be more open. Or if you did some post processing. (reverb, etc...) I've only ever used a 57 but all my cab micing has been high gain metal. Dont need much "room sound" there. The further back you get it from the cone the more room you get in the recording. Normally Dynamic mics like that are used pretty close though. Condenser mics can be used further away. I've read of people mixing the signals from both once recorded... As everybody said, try to lower down the volume so there is not clipping. You can monitor the clipping on the LED meter on the preamp, and also monitor it in the recording application.
