GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ How Long Do U Use Ur Picks For?

Posted by: buttmonk Nov 18 2007, 03:55 AM

Hi all,

Just wondering how much use people get out of a pick. For example, I probably get about 5-10 hours out of a Dunlop tortex .88mm before I start to feelit is getting too flattended off. Any suggestions for longer lasting alternatives?

cheers,

I have a pile of em on my amp and several of them scattered all over the house so mine get very intemittent wear. I probably lose them before they wear out. is there a rule of thumb for pick use?

5-10 hours... ? ohmy.gif

I use mine for months/years.

Posted by: swingline Nov 18 2007, 04:01 AM

I use mine until they are irritatingly rounded off aka months.
Edit typos

Until I lose them... which is actually pretty fast, most of the time! laugh.gif

If your picks get rounded off, use sand paper to sharpen them.
That will make them last a bit longer.

I use them till I feel I can't play with them anymore. Or if I lose them laugh.gif

true! they are too expensive, I always try and cadge a few from the music shop when I buy strings etc, they`ll usually give you a few if ya ask nice wink.gif

Posted by: The Uncreator Nov 18 2007, 05:33 AM

till they are gone, takes me about a week to lose....20 or so laugh.gif

Posted by: botoxfox Nov 18 2007, 05:36 AM

I always keep my picks in a box or something. And I'm not using black picks either, because they sort of blend in with the surroundings, making them impossible to find.

you guys should get light picks like muris has, since you paid 40 bucks for it youll probly look after it a little better :-) and the tips are replaceable so i think its the way to go. lol

Posted by: Batista Nov 18 2007, 07:24 AM

I have a pick I am really in love with, and it is starting to get pretty worn now, but I just can't use any other. Or at least any other type. This one is 73mm and the others I have is a lot thicker, so I'll guess I'll have to take a trip down to the local store to get some new 73mm. Can't play with thicker.

yeh, 5-10hrs is when i start to feel that it ain't as good as it was, then i tend to look around my collection to find 1 that is not quite as bad. when the end gets flat it tends to give more of a scrape than a pluck. Good point about filing it back into shape, will have to start doing that:)

I agree, I have never worn out a pick before I have lost it.... They are extremely easy to lose, glass slides are pretty easy to lose aswell, but they always turn up. Well actually picks turn up too, if I run out of picks i just shift furniture until I find one, always works. smile.gif

Posted by: mattacuk Nov 18 2007, 05:57 PM

Ive never known a pick to just "wear" out ! This is a new phenomenon to me wink.gif

Posted by: preownedguitar Nov 18 2007, 05:58 PM

Pretty much till I lose them or sometimes when I'm reading on the internet I sometimes hold it with my teeth and ruin them like that, but thats like once every week since I can't really read. Just kidding! But I would say, until I lose them which could take anywhere from 1 week to 4 months.

Posted by: shredmandan Nov 18 2007, 07:05 PM

Well it really all depends. smile.gif
One thing that i cant stand is when a pick gets a little groove, nick or chip in it .That causes weird and messed up picking so when i have one like that i just put it aside and save it just incase i have nothing else left to use.Alot of times i will use those picks to do techniques like pick scrapes and tapping cause imo there already ruined andi never use a good brand new pick for those tech.

If it isnt for reasons listed above then i can use them for a really long time.I dont ever throw away picks unless there just completly no use left. One of my buddies always breaks them blink.gif That doesnt make sense to me?I dont know how he does it cause i may have broke 1 pick in my 11 years playing. If i had my way though i would use a new pick every day.It great to get that brand new pick and start using it,feels great on your finger's and just sounds smooth, but i just cant go buy picks every day so i make do with what i have

Obviously you never played long enough for a pick to wear off tongue.gif tongue.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif Get back to practice!!! And don't come back until your pick is worn off laugh.gif laugh.gif

I use these little beefy picks Stubby 1mm. Ive never managed to round it off enough to have it unuseable. I also use Alice .81mm These are my favorites.. with them i use them usually until i lose them, but i do enjoy when they round off.. its just once its flat they are no longer usuable biggrin.gif

I use Jazz III's, the 1.31mm black ones. They're easy to lose. So, until I lose them. I don't think they could wear out unless I started using 12 gage strings or so.

When I used to play with Fender Mediums, I could break picks or wear them down a ton.

The Jazz III seems indestructible.

Posted by: kebsis Dec 22 2007, 12:43 AM

lol, i lose them so fast I've never actually thought of them as things that 'wear out'.

Around these parts they're sorta like Bic lighters, sort of finders keepers.

Posted by: stratman33 Dec 24 2007, 04:08 PM

i just use them until they get lost..losing picks is a baaaaaaad habit of mine.

Posted by: Milenkovic Ivan Dec 25 2007, 09:39 PM

I use a bunch of them at once, and when they all get weared out I buy another bunch and so on. In th old days I used to use one pick for a long time, using a sand paper to make it pointy again.

Posted by: Freddie Fourfingers Dec 31 2007, 02:13 AM

All this talk of losing picks is why I have stayed away from fingerpicking.

Posted by: Spiderusalem Dec 31 2007, 02:17 AM

I wanna buy an expensive bone guitar pick because I'm so tired of not caring about them.

Posted by: erik Jan 1 2008, 11:45 PM

I have three of theese in my pick-holder at my guitar, and I just takes out one at random everytime I play, so they wear off equally. They last forever though, I have about 10 of those, and I don't think I have thrown one out yet.

Posted by: Hisham Jan 2 2008, 12:29 AM

you can use it once for hard song

Posted by: Smells Jan 2 2008, 12:35 AM

once? blink.gif I`d best throw all mine away and buy some more then laugh.gif

Posted by: Muris Jan 2 2008, 12:59 AM

I usually lost few of EB's per day,it's impossible to count its duration laugh.gif
But since I use 2.0mm and more I guess it can last quite long tho wink.gif

Posted by: Smells Jan 2 2008, 01:01 AM

yea in fairness, when I ran out of Jazz III`s and used some Gibson picks they only lasted one rehearsal session tbh, I was amazed at there wear rate, the Jazz III`s last me a good while tho, I actually prefer them a little worn smile.gif
