QUOTE Former Red Hot Chili Peppers star John Frusciante has been named the greatest guitarist of the last 30 years. The musician left the rock band after they embarked on a two-year hiatus in 2007, choosing not to rejoin the group when they reconvened last year (09). He is now focusing on his solo career, but his work with the Suck My Kiss hitmakers has helped propel him to the top of a new list to find the best guitarists of the last three decades. Frusciante topped the poll by BBC 6 Music, seeing off competition from former Guns N' Roses rocker Slash, who claimed second place and Muse frontman Matt Bellamy in third. Former The Smiths star Johnny Marr came fourth, while the top five was rounded out by Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello. Source: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/genera..._guitarist.html I suppose this sort of thing comes down to taste, but nontheless, what an honour! Congrats to him and all the Frusciante fans! -------------------- |

He deserves recognition! I don't think guitar players (musicians in general) can be but in "Top 10" of any kind though. I really love Frusciante's work and I'm very sad he left the Chillis

Although loads of people like his music, there is no such thing as the greatest guitarist ever.. And if we where to judge by technique.. Players like Rusty Cooley and Michael Angelo batio would easily surpass him.. An honor for him non the less tho. -1 opinion Cooley and Batio are very very very very VERY fast. However, their verifiable accolades end right there. Fewer material successes and (my opinion, didn't research) less artistry and fewer fans. Since the thread isn't about those other guys, let's just congratulate Frusciante for his recognition and for all his great work with a great band that's kept people dancing, partying, happy, for over 23 years now. -------------------- ::jafomatic

Whats best or not, is a subjective matter. But I still think that guitar-players can be measured according to their importance and development in the art of playing guitar. Ofc. this is also subjective, but I think there are players that have influented a lot more other guitar-players than John Frusciante, even that he deserves some good critics.

He surely deserves recognition, but the best or the worst variates in opinions.

Best in what? It's music, art, cannot compete there. Why even bother. They all created something so personal and beautiful, we should only enjoy it for once, not trying to see how's "better".

They all created something so personal and beautiful, we should only enjoy it for once, not trying to see how's "better". +1 Music is subjective. Songs I love, others may hate, and viceversa. I like browsing these "lists" here and there though, sometimes they make me go deep into a new band or artist, and they make great board threads But I never "believe" the actual order, as it's just based on the opinion of a few people that made them. -------------------- Guitars:

Competition in music only creates enemies. I still can't understand why people have always to put something so beatiful and so open-minder like music in competition

Here is a sampling of the best guitarist in the last 30 years live. Listen to the end particularly, tired age worn lead, and not even well executed tire age worn lead at that.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9xCCjL1RZE I really never saw much in them, one of those bands some people liked, but I felt was nothing that special, or even that creative. But he definitely has serious technical limitations...every teacher here wipes him out in terms of technical skill. To be considered as one of the greats, in all reasonableness, there are certain prerequisites. Technical skill is not enough, but it is a necessary ingredient for consideration for being the one who best represents excellence in a 30 year period. I understand, everyone has right to his opinion, and in a democracy one has to respect the rights of others to have their free opinion. But that does not mean you have to respect the opinion itself, you may consider it ridiculous. You just have to respect the right of a person to have it, no matter how dopey it is. It's cool that everyone got their opinion, but i do think he's one of the greatest, he accomplish something in my opinion that a lot of the 80's guitar players fail, he really express emotions on his playing, he's a great composer, and a soulful guitar player. now check that last solo, the tone, the emotion, it's singing..
