Welcome mate! biggrin.gif

This here is YOUR spot! biggrin.gif Let me know what you're workin' on and what you'd like to achieve in the near future so that we may know where to start biggrin.gif

all the best

Cosmin

Very nice laugh.gif

Besides the weird tasks sensei Ben gives me every week I am currently trying to write some of my own songs and mess around with drop tunings, especially drop D. But I am kinda stuck at the moment and can't grasp all the possibilities this tuning gives me. So I'd like to work on finding cool riff ideas and turn them into a full song...if you get what I mean?
Plus my legato is still pretty bad laugh.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Feb 14 2012, 10:34 AM

Alrighty! Legato and modern riffing will be our concerns then biggrin.gif what say you?

Posted by: Gitarrero Feb 14 2012, 07:10 PM

Maybe we could skip the legato until...somewhat later?? laugh.gif

Just kidding, that's a great idea smile.gif Once we get a bit deeper into riffing I'd also like to learn how to structure a song and so on...

Sure Christian! Let's get to it smile.gif first things first, I would go with the rhythm and riffing. Now please tell me, what do you feel your weak spots are in rhythm playing? Are there any particular lessons which you are working on at the moment?

Posted by: Gitarrero Feb 15 2012, 10:03 AM

I am currently working (once again) on the Pillar and Breaking Benjamin lessons.
I am pretty confident when it comes to riffing on the low strings, but get confused and lose the rhythm when I have to switch between low riffs and licks on the high strings (and frets), if that makes any sense to you?
When I try to come up with riffs by myself, I always play around on the low strings exclusively, and only up to the 7th fret, so after a while they sound boring when I put them into a song...I'd really like to develop more diversity smile.gif

Well, the Pillar lesson has elements such as those implemented here and there, so I think it would be a good starting point. When I am building riffs I am usually trying to think in terms of being as tight as possible with the drums. The 'color' elements are being added somewhat afterwards, by trying to actually blend two guitars into one smile.gif

What you are saying makes a lot of sense to me indeed smile.gif for instance, I am using small arpeggiated chord forms implemented in my riffs, as they bring out color and texture to the track. Try this for instance:

- tune down to drop D
- find D minor arpeggio shapes and try to come up with little riffs in which you alternate the D5 shapes - as many as you can find along the neck and combine them with the short arpeggiated forms

And in the mean time, I would be very curious if you could record the lessons and psot them here, not in the REC biggrin.gif we could prepare them so that you could go for the 10 wink.gif

what say you Christianmeister?

Cosmin

Posted by: Gitarrero Feb 15 2012, 10:28 AM

A 10 in the rec? Sounds like a plan smile.gif

I will also try the Drop D trick, I have noticed that you work with these little arpeggios...so why shouldn't I? wink.gif

Since I got two days off from work you can expect some videos today and tomorrow smile.gif

Man, the pillar lesson is really hard at full speed!!
I am recording at the moment, maybe I'll go with a slower BT first so we can start working from there...stay tuned smile.gif

Here we go, first try!
I actually recorded it at full speed for a number of reasons...the 75 bpm BT wasn't downloadable and a bit too slow, imo...and I wanted to push myself. I got one of the riffs confused towards the end and played a wrong note, but other than that I think this take is a good starting point.
So, what are your suggestions? wink.gif

Hey Christian!

You're on the yellow brick road mate biggrin.gif now, here's what I think you can improve:

- the guitar seems a bit out of tune so, check it please smile.gif
- practice it at 75% trust me - it WILL gain that 'open greatness' of the riff just because you will master every detail
- by practicing it slowly you will tighten your playing up and make everything sound clean
- gain balance when playing follow the drums as tight as possible
- your tone could use a bit more gain for this type of riffage, me thinks

with these in mind, have another go and let's see what you get wink.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Feb 16 2012, 01:01 PM

Sure thing, thanks for the feedback smile.gif
Hm, could you send me the 75 bpm backing so I can record it?
Thanks!

Hi Cosmin,

I took a shot at the Breaking Benjamin lesson in the meantime...it feels so much more comfortable smile.gif
What do you think about this take?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Feb 17 2012, 10:28 AM

hey Christian!

Good take mate! Looks like you have nailed it alright biggrin.gif now let's go over to the details wink.gif

- at about 0.20 take care to let those harmonics be heard biggrin.gif and push the neck from behind a bit tongue.gif to get that bended sound of all the harmonics at once.
- the riffing could be tighter, but I think the tone is a bit muddy so it may come from that

Otherwise I think you are pretty ready for a REC if you wish to proceed, my German friend biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Feb 17 2012, 03:26 PM

Thanks Cosmin!
I decided to post it to rec straight away, but I will continue practicing this lesson smile.gif
Now I am going to work on the Pillar lesson again, expect a video later today smile.gif

Well, I got two 10s for the BB take, not too bad for a start, heh? laugh.gif

I decided to throw in a little bass practice yesterday (as you have seen), but now I am back with the Pillar lesson. Stay tuned for another take wink.gif

And here we go:

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Feb 19 2012, 12:51 PM

Hey Christian! Nice! NICE! Tight and in time! The only two important aspects would be:

- the tone should have more gain and be a little bit less fuzzy, what sort of device are you using for the tone and what settings?
- the part from 0:58 needs more definition and tightness!

Otherwise it's DEAD on! Let's set the tone straight get tightness on the last part, pump everything up to speed and get that 10! GO GO GO!! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Feb 19 2012, 12:55 PM

Thanks Cosmin biggrin.gif

For this take I used a preset in Overloud TH1, for the other take I used a Guitar Rig 4 preset...so if you happen to use any of that software I'd be glad to get your tone settings wink.gif
Of course I can also mess around with the presets myself...what would you suggest? More gain and more treble?

Mate, I have no experience with those but, the tone lacks punch sad.gif

For instance my settings (on the AMT SS20) would have the scooped mids (or almost scooped) and bass around 10 o clock, highs around 1 o clock and gain about 1-2 o clock. Try these and see what you get, if they don't work so well, we'll figure something out, k?

Hey Christian! MUCH MUCH MUCH better! Still, you could improve on the tightness of the execution and fret the notes more - I don't know how to tell you this exactly as I don't have words for it but, think of it as a left hand exercise - somehow you have to create flow by linking the notes better - there are teeny tiny gaps here and there which eat up the flow.

Punch in A BIT more gain and you can be there, c'mon !! This can be a 10!!! Work with me, k? biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Feb 25 2012, 08:11 PM

Hey Christian! Why the big rush my friend? smile.gif The take before this one was way better - your timing was not so good and the tightness as well. Am I getting the impression you were in a hurry to record? smile.gif

Take a look at both of the takes and you'll notice you have more flow, tightness and better timing on the previous one. Hmmmm - take a break with this one. A day off from it will help settling down. Try another take with your mind fresh from the lesson. I'm curious to see the results wink.gif no fear, we'll nail the 10!

Posted by: Gitarrero Feb 27 2012, 07:05 PM

Ha, just realized you changed the name of the topic...I wonder what you mean by bass training!? tongue.gif

Yeah, about the take: I just wanted to record it and make it perfect yesterday, but the smart part of me realized after three horrible attempts I just didn't have it in me that day. However, the bigger part (let's call it german part laugh.gif ) said "try again...and again...another one!"
I just overplayed it yesterday, so I'll leave this lesson for today and try to record a new take tomorrow. Maybe during Ben's chat, he won't realize when I sneak away for a few minutes wink.gif
Seriously, when I realize during the first three attempts that it won't work I'll just stop in the future biggrin.gif
Maybe I'll play some bass instead today wink.gif

Sure thing wink.gif there are all sorts of days man - if I feel I'm not good that day, I'll just go do something else smile.gif they next day, chances are I'll have lots more energy than before and inspiration will come along as well wink.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Feb 28 2012, 08:23 PM

I'm sure you have a recommendation, don't you? wink.gif

But I really liked the drop tuning riffing stuff so far and I wanna get better at writing my own stuff in drop tuning, so we should go down that road a bit further. And a little bass exercise wouldn't hurt as well laugh.gif

Before I move on to Metal Metrics One now (the legato licks are already driving me insane, tbh) here is a new shot at the Pillar lesson.
I must say, I felt much better playing this today, so what do you think?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Mar 4 2012, 01:05 PM

Hey Christian! Mate, until 0.45 when the chorus part kicks in, it feels groovie and pretty tight, but from that point on, it's a bit muddy - you need more definition and accuracy smile.gif it seems to me that the take before the previous take you submitted, still remains the strongest.

Hmmmm, why not give this one a little more time? Let's see how you fare on Metal Metrics 1 biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Mar 4 2012, 01:09 PM

Yeah, the part you are talking about is my weak spot in this lesson, it really drives me nuts laugh.gif

I'll see what I can do with MM1, but as I said, the legato stuff in there is really challenging for me. I might call legato my Nemesis! biggrin.gif

OK you asked for it!

I would like you to learn this lesson : http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Beginner_Walking_Bass/

Main goal here is to actually learn the approach explained in the lesson.
How to improvise a simple walking bass line using half-step from above/bellow approach and where to play which note.

Once you are ready - let me know and I'll make a custom backing track so that you can implement it (improvise on the spot!).
If you feel so - you could record a REC of the lesson itself along the way. Main thing here is not to learn the demo tune rather approach behind it.

Its simple yet very effective and fun, you'll see!

Let me know if you need any help along the way.

(sorry Cosmin for hijacking thread - he asked for it! smile.gif )

Time for a bass assignment! smile.gif

BACKING TRACK :  gitarrero_backing.mp3 ( 748.08K ) : 83

CHORD PROGRESSION :

I want you to record these 3 exercises :

1. Walking bass line utilizing ONLY "half-step ABOVE" approach
2. Walking bass line utilizing ONLY "half-step BELLOW" approach
3. Freestyle - mix both approaches to free will

Tips : get familiar with the chord progression. Write it down on paper and follow it while jamming to the backing.
You want to be able to just look and play the "concept" in real time as you get some practice. Track I sent you is easily loopable.

Hey Christian! Glad to know ye're working on that one smile.gif you should try slowing it down until you can play it perfectly and very rhythmically, as that is its nature smile.gif once you nail it slow, work it up to speed focusing on the tight rhythmic approach wink.gif

It's been a few weeks without a proper practice routine now, but I've been working on two other lessons over the weekend and just recorded them for rec. So please check the rec section, as I uploaded them just now biggrin.gif

Hey mate, I'm on it tongue.gif if you want a practice routine let me know and we can cook smth up wink.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: Gitarrero Apr 2 2012, 08:56 PM

Sure thing biggrin.gif
As I am also in Gab's Army, he told me to practice these two lessons:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/legato_and_picking_intermediate/
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/legato-lesson/
he said something about legato being my weak spot...quite a shock, I must say laugh.gif
Just kidding.
For AP, I practice these two lessons (the latter not at full speed though):
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Metal_Patterns_1/
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/modal-madness/

And then I work on any lesson you, Gabriel or Ben might give me on top of that. Or I write some stuff on my own. And play a bunch of older lessons I already mastered, just to warm-up.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 3 2012, 04:05 PM

Hey mate, looks like your hands are full smile.gif how much time can you dedicate to music, each day?

Posted by: Gitarrero Apr 3 2012, 05:32 PM

Hi Cosmin!

Usually it's 1 hour, sometimes only 30 minutes, sometimes 90 minutes.

Fridays and on weekends I usually have a lot more time, but especially in spring and summer I travel a lot so there will be weekends when I won't be able to touch the guitar at all.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 5 2012, 03:21 PM

Mate, out of what I am seeing in your vids, we should insist on everything which implies timing, tightness and a bit of techniques such as AP and maybe a bit of legato.

In my opinion, a solid axeman, has to have a good grasp on rhythm and right-left hand coordination - what do you say if we would focus a bit on this idea?

Cosmin

Posted by: Gitarrero Apr 6 2012, 08:55 AM

Sounds like a plan!

So, what do you think: how should my perfect practice routine look like for this plan?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 9 2012, 09:42 AM

hey Christian! Let's focus on 1 hr/ day divided like this:

Day 1
15 minutes Warmup
20 minutes - rhythm
20 minutes - legato

Day 2
Same only replacing legato with AP

Now, we can choose lessons from here on which I want you to focus, by following a few key elements:

- play everything slowly
- pay attention to ALL the details
- focus on tightness and timing until you reach perfection

You will eventually develop a sense which will be with you ALL the time biggrin.gif

How does this sound?

Cosmin

Posted by: Gitarrero Apr 10 2012, 07:57 PM

That sounds great Cosmin!
So, what lessons would you propse?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 11 2012, 10:36 AM

Hey Christian!

Let's start with some easy ones, they will be a bit stray from your area tongue.gif but they will help out more than you think wink.gif

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/i-got-rhythm-guitar6-funk-basics1/

Regarding AP and legato - have you tried Ben's lessons so far? If yes, how are you faring with them?

Cosmin

Posted by: Gitarrero Apr 11 2012, 06:32 PM

What the funk?? biggrin.gif Looks like a cool lesson, I'll try that one.
I've worked on Ben's land of legato 1 before and will add it to my routine.
As for AP, I didn't really check his lessons, will do that now.
What do you suggest, should I pick 2 lessons for legato and 2 for AP?

One for each smile.gif get them PERFECT and then we move on to others - you are ALMOST THERE in everything you post. My aim is to get you THERE! biggrin.gif

Hey Cosmin, it's been a while!
But I'm back, had to reschedule some things in my life, but now I'm sure I got more time for guitar again.
Here is my first take, tell me what you think.
I'm most likely gonna record another one today.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 6 2012, 12:23 PM

Hey Christian! smile.gif Welcome back man! The take is technically sounding ok, with a few minor slips, but your right hand looks a bit tense and rigid - would you try to loosen it up? When you will become more relaxed, the take will sound even better smile.gif I think you could try to work on it at a slower tempo and get it flowing with your right hand relaxed smile.gif

What else have you been up to, Mr.?

Posted by: Gitarrero May 6 2012, 01:32 PM

Will do! Though my right hand always looks kinda tense on video, no matter what speed. It doesn't really feel tense though, strangely enough...but I'll see what I can do wink.gif

Had a lot to do at my job and spend a lot of time going out with new friends I found here, so very little guitar time.

At the moment, I am browsing through old level 3 and 4 lessons I already mastered, just to get the feeling of playing again. I've also got some new original songs and student instructor lessons in my head, but I'll tackle these one at a time wink.gif

And of course I am messing around with the backing track of your new collab smile.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 7 2012, 07:57 AM

Oh, so, life got in the way eh? smile.gif I know how that feels man - will you be joining the new collab? biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero May 7 2012, 05:28 PM

Nah, life didn't get in the way...but no better take came out laugh.gif So I didn't bother uploading stuff. But when I'm back from the gym I'll give it another try, so expect a video within the next three hours wink.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero May 7 2012, 09:01 PM

Hey Cosmin!

After a nice and cosy arm warm-up in the gym wink.gif I was ready for some practice. And here is the outcome! I think this take is better than the first one, what do you think?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 8 2012, 03:29 PM

Heya Christian! Indeed, the hand looks more relaxed smile.gif I think that you are moving a bit too much though, the wrist motion is correct but you could focus on being more and more economic man wink.gif tell me are you up for another AP oriented lesson? I am thinking about one incorporating a bit more string crossing biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero May 8 2012, 04:53 PM

AP you say? Bring it on! biggrin.gif
So you are saying I should move my wrist less? Or my arm?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 8 2012, 05:03 PM

You should be more economic when moving your wrist about smile.gif aaaaand here's my new challenge to you:

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Picking-Arpeggios/

strive towards obtaining a clean ringing tone and good timing just like Ben does it here wink.gif what say you mate?

Cosmin

Posted by: Gitarrero May 8 2012, 07:22 PM

Okay Cosmin, how much does Ben pay you to promote his lessons? laugh.gif

Seriously, great choice. I've already learned this one and use it as a warm-up for the left and right hand, some finger position still feel a bit awkward though.
I'll post something one friday or saturday!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 9 2012, 10:12 AM

Ben .... biggrin.gif well.... the donut transport should arrive any minute now....oh, what was I saying here biggrin.gif

Alright, give me some clean picked arpeggios Mr!

let's revive this thread after you've returned from the mountains biggrin.gif
I am recording a drop tuned song right now and will post it this weekend, maybe we could use this as a new starting point wink.gif

Hi Cosmin,

the promised song can be found here, maybe you could give me some advice regarding how to record vocals in a better way:

Christian

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 23 2012, 02:40 PM

Mate, this is a good start! My first impressions are:

- good atmosphere!
- I hope it was my Voodoo riff in metal metrics 4 which inspired you tongue.gif if not, I like it anyway and it reminds me of that one biggrin.gif
- I would add more dynamics starting with the drum groove - some fills, some breakdowns - not lengthy, but enough to let the music breathe.
- The voice - I record using the Shure SM7B in the soundboard and into the Samplitude DAW, I add some compressions and that's quite it.

This mic is very good! It was used by Incubus, Metallica, Michael Jackson, RHCP and Pearl Jam out of what I know smile.gif

Check out some stuff about it here:

http://www.shure.com/americas/products/microphones/sm/sm7b-vocal-microphone

..and let's try to spice up the tune, if you want and also, please tell me what you have in mind for the next period of guitar playing biggrin.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: Gitarrero Jul 23 2012, 02:50 PM

Metal Metrics? Never heard of it laugh.gif
Yes, it actually did inspire me wink.gif

About the mic, I got a Shure mic that I used on stage for many years and it's pretty good. I think the problem was that I had to run it through the v-amp 3 to connect it to my PC. I will order a device that let's me connect the mic directly to the PC via USB, Todd recommended it to me.
Spicing up the drums sounds cool to me, I will mess around with it a bit.

As for the next period of guitar playing: I've been really inspired lately and recorded a few demos. I found out one thing: I love composing punk tunes, so I will discuss these with Gabriel (you might wanna check out our thread, or my soundcloud).

Now, the Diablo based tune inspired me to write more modern metal songs that focus on stories of fictional characters (like from PC games). So I wanna write riffs like in your metal metrics series biggrin.gif focussing on drop tunings as they just sound great for this stuff.

So...how can we go on from here? Should I post some demos and we spice them up? Or focus on ideas how to put a modern metal song together?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 24 2012, 09:09 AM

Hey Christian! Song writing is the best way to improve songwriting biggrin.gif so here's what I suggest:

- post the demos
- we discuss and improve them
- you record and tweak till they get as close to perfection as possible smile.gif

Aye? Vat does zi German say!?? biggrin.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: Gitarrero Jul 24 2012, 09:18 AM

Zi german ssinks zis is a great idea!

At the moment, I have only recorded a few riffs that I think sound cool, so no bass, no drums or anything...
Should I at least record a drum track as well, or are you happy with riffs for the moment?

Posted by: Gitarrero Jul 24 2012, 12:50 PM

Ha, see what I did...I did not even wait for your answer laugh.gif
What I did was record Intro/Main Riff, Verse and Chorus. No drum tracks or anything.
So, hier ah ze trecks:

Queen of Blades (any gamer will know what this song will be about), Drop C, I played an octave melody cause I think it sounds cool. This is supposed to be a faster song.

http://soundcloud.com/gitarrero/queen-of-blades

What does zi romanian say?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 25 2012, 08:09 AM

Ja jaaaaaa mein freund! biggrin.gif

Zi rumenien say:

- all the ideas have great potential
- I want you to play cleaner, tighter and with better timing
- I want you to start workin' on them drums! The difference will be HUGE biggrin.gif

Let's transform these two into great songs, ok??

Cosmin

Posted by: Gitarrero Jul 25 2012, 11:50 AM

Vielen Dank!

Good to hear that these riffs got potential biggrin.gif
I actually recorded them without a metronome, so I will create drums and hopefully the tightness will follow wink.gif

You can expect new results this weekend!

Got that, mate tongue.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Jul 29 2012, 10:21 AM

Hi Cosmin!

I updated the track "Queen of Blades" with drums now and recorded everything again. I couldn't find any cool fills yet, nor how to combine the main riff, verse and chorus in a cool way...but that will come smile.gif
What do you think about the drums? I used a different approach here, with somewhat slower or more relaxed drums, since double bass drums didn't really sound so good.

http://soundcloud.com/gitarrero/queen-of-blades-updated-with

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 29 2012, 01:28 PM

hey Christian! Totally love the approach! Sounds like fresh modern punk rock with some metal twist to me smile.gif Let's keep it this way and develop further!

The slower part is good, because it creates dynamics in the song - now, for the fills, you might want to create small guitar interventions which could be doubled by fills - like the one you are struggling with in Metal Metrics 1 tongue.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: Gitarrero Oct 16 2012, 04:53 PM

Hi Cosmin!

As promised in our skype session, I worked on the track Queen of Blades, added thirds and stuff biggrin.gif

It's not perfect yet, and I did not record bass or vocals...but this is the song so far:

http://soundcloud.com/gitarrero/queen-of-blades

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Oct 16 2012, 05:02 PM

Very nice man! biggrin.gif It sure does miss the bass though biggrin.gif I mean the riffs are good but they lack a bit of power which will come from the bass added in the mix aaaand, I think I'd pump those drums up a bit too.

Let's hear the next version!!

Cosmin

Posted by: Gitarrero Oct 16 2012, 05:09 PM

Yeah, I mixed the drums in the back while arranging the guitar tracks and forgot to push the sound back up laugh.gif

laugh.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Oct 16 2012, 06:54 PM

Here we go again!

Added bass, pushed the drums (especially the kick drum) a bit...sounds pretty close to what I had in mind biggrin.gif

http://soundcloud.com/gitarrero/queen-of-blades

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Oct 17 2012, 08:15 AM

Sounds bigger indeed! biggrin.gif Christian, I would like you to be more groovy somehow - the take is rhythmically correct but it's a bit too rigid - I think the drums should be more dynamic in the approach. You know, a lot if not about 80% of the dynamics in a song come from the drums. And the vocals man! Will this be the 'Guitarrero singing take' as well? biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Oct 17 2012, 08:43 AM

It sure will biggrin.gif
I was thinking of using the demon voice again though, like in my other song...but maybe I'll try it wothout FX anyway laugh.gif

About the drums: so you mean I should use a different drum groove? I kinda like the groove for the pre-chorus (with a lot of tom-toms)...should I try using something like that for the whole thing?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Oct 17 2012, 08:46 AM

smile.gif Enrich the already existing grooves, do not change them wink.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Oct 17 2012, 08:50 AM

Ah, you mean by adding some more fills and stuff?

Cool, I will try that now! (since I have a day off biggrin.gif )

Posted by: Gitarrero Oct 17 2012, 02:27 PM

Hi Cosmin!

I added a couple of fills to the drums now, what do you think of it?

My first vocal cover!

I've done quite a few these past weeks, now it's time to get some feedback.

Let's start with a song by Rise Against called Swing Life Away.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Mar 16 2013, 11:41 AM

Wow dude! I am impressed biggrin.gif Nice singing! Listen, I am currently working on an extensive list of songs that I am learning to play - acoustic guitar and voice, so you caught me in the right moment to appreciate this at it's fullest laugh.gif

You have a good voice, you are in tune and you are paying attention to details! Great job Christian - do you have more? biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Mar 16 2013, 11:53 AM

Ha, thanks C-Maestro!

I do...am doing re-recordings of a few songs now. So stay tuned, more will come your way today!

Awesome mate! Let me know biggrin.gif What bands have you covered so far?

Awesome mate! Let me know biggrin.gif What bands have you covered so far?

The usual suspects (in my case): Rise Against, Green Day, Bad Religion, Sum 41 but also a few lesser know bands and artists. Colin Hay has some great acoustic pieces.

I am uploading stuff at the moment, but here are the first four:

Left and Leaving is a beautiful song by The Weakerthans, it is somewhat high but this is pretty much the range where I feel most confident:

My Immortal by Evanescence...I did this one since a friend of mine requested it for like 6 months now. I don't think it's bad, but I like most of my other recordings better.

Good Riddance by Green Day, obviously biggrin.gif

And a german song, I'll post it anyway. The band is called Revolverheld (Gunslinger) and are pretty much known for their rock ballads. I like to sing this song since it switches between moderate and powerful singing. This was actually the first acoustic recording I ever did smile.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Mar 16 2013, 04:59 PM

And two more...

Pieces by Sum 41, one of my favourite songs:

And a great song by Colin Hay...he has some weird singing sometimes, so I pretty much stripped this song down for me biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Mar 17 2013, 01:13 PM

I did a new recording of My Immortal this morning, this key worked better for me.

Looking forward to your feedback!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Mar 17 2013, 05:10 PM

Hey man! Awesome bunch! biggrin.gif Sorry for not answering faster, but I wanted to listen to them all before writing you back.

I have a little bit more to work on my version of 3 Lybras by A perfect circle and I will post it here for your attention smile.gif biggrin.gif

The overall impression is that you have a very nice voice, but you need to work on becoming more expressive, so the devil is in the details mate biggrin.gif Analyze the styles of the vocalists you are emulating - what do they accentuate, where are they singing more aggressive or soft? That sort of stuff smile.gif

Post MORE biggrin.gif I am very happy to share my experiences with someone who is on the same journey as myself at this point smile.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Mar 17 2013, 08:54 PM

Hey mate smile.gif Got something for ya biggrin.gif

Not the best sound, unfortunately, but I'll take care of that when I upload the next version wink.gif Stay tuned amigo!

Posted by: Gitarrero Mar 20 2013, 09:23 PM

Hi Cosmin!

And sorry for the late reply biggrin.gif

Thanks a lot for the video, I really appreciate it and it's cool to have someone who is on the same journey as I am!

I don't have any new recordings yet, I have a few songs in mind but am still having difficulty singing them. I'd say one thing we both have in common is that we prefer the middle to high singing range, actually you sing pretty high in this video (which is still giving me trouble). I am having a hard time when a song starts out low and then I have to switch to a higher voice in the chorus. I usually start out to high and simply don't have a chance to reach the high notes in the chorus. So right now I am playing the songs I wanna learn in different keys, which helps in some cases. So most of the times I play it safe and sing with little expression so I can stay in tune. It's probably a lack of trust in my own voice biggrin.gif I mean there are songs that I sing with confidence and where I actually dare to sing louder (or more powerful), but that only happens with a few songs.
So my main goal now is to find like 10 songs that I can focus on and make them sound perfect.
As for singing and playing guitar, I have a hard time focusing on guitar playing when I sing. Strumming chords is ok, but everything else is impossible at this moment. I think you did an awesome job in your video!
I'll be away for the weekend, but I'll work on more songs and post more videos soon.
I actually hava a few more german songs in my arsenal, would you be interested in hearing them as well?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Mar 20 2013, 09:59 PM

Hey amigo biggrin.gif

Sure, you can post them as well, but since I have no clue on German, I won't be able to guide you with some stuff that I have in mind smile.gif

But post them anyway biggrin.gif Now, I was not warmed up when I shot that smile.gif I can do a much better job and I will prove it! biggrin.gif

Keep me posted and I will do the same - the ending of 3 Lybras is nasty as hell - high pitch and weird phrasing

Mr. Christian! In your world, does holiday mean a holiday from the guitar as well? sad.gif biggrin.gif Kidding, but I am curious smile.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Apr 8 2013, 10:34 AM

In my world, holiday means travelling, visiting friends and family, taking my guitar with me but leaving the recording gear at home biggrin.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 9 2013, 08:37 AM

Ohhh, I get it, I get it biggrin.gif Well then, I have worked on my acoustic list which grew terribly big - about 35 songs laugh.gif Well, frankly speaking I can play about 5 of them both guitar and vox and I still need to work on orchestrations, but I'll be slowly getting there smile.gif

The plan is to be able to gig by myself when not gigging with Days of Confusion and hold an acoustic gig which lasts at least one hour and a half. That's about 20 songs. And have guests biggrin.gif I want to build up a show that keeps people guessing at every song - offering them an experience! But there's a lot to work on up to that point..

Posted by: Gitarrero Apr 9 2013, 09:02 AM

sounds like a great plan!
I'll have to check your list to find some more songs for me...could you post it?
I recorded 3 more covers yesterday but have to edit the videos, so they'll be up tonight smile.gif
I am still having trouble concentrating on picking or even strumming patterns when I sing, but I'll get there. Stay tuned!

Hey amigo! It means I'll have something to listen to when I get back home from sword practice smile.gif

I attached my list here - something you like?

Nice list, and a few of these songs are on my list as well.

I discovered Whiskey lullaby thanks to you like a year ago...and guess what...it's among today's uploads!

I'd be really interested in your acoustic versions of the DOC songs... wink.gif

And I've got a question: do you play all these songs in their original key, or do you change it so it fits your voice better? Cause I do the first and I guess I should do the latter...

Anyways, here are 3 more acoustic covers from ze german!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 10 2013, 09:07 AM

Hey brother!

Good job! I definitely see a pattern that leads to a favorite style of yours, in what regards tackling these covers wink.gif

My advice:

- change the keys so that they may suit your voice biggrin.gif You'll have a wonderful surprise when you'll discover the possibilities.
- work on interpretation - you are in pitch most of the times, but you lack color and that's one of the most important things in singing!
- DON"T STOP! It's what will make you progress and discover your voice smile.gif
- explore more rhythm patterns and picking patterns suited for each style - 'Whiskey Lullaby' would sound better with some picked pattern smile.gif I will show you in a movie, once I start working on it.

For instance, on the Prince song, I took a very different approach ->

I still have a long way to go, but I am discovering things and that feels INCREDIBLY GREAT!

Hey Cosmin,

thanks for the feedback! I'm curious, what kind of pattern in my favourite songs do you see? biggrin.gif

Awesome Prince video...I'll have to try stuff like this, although it is obviously pretty difficult.

This weekend I'll revisit some of the songs I uploaded and play them in different keys, so I can sing them a little higher...I have the feeling that I have more color in my voice when I get out of the lower ranges.

So stay tuned for some more vocal madness from ze german!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 12 2013, 08:12 AM

ze german is quite right biggrin.gif After making sure you will find your comfort range, your singing will be A LOT better. I am quite like you from this perspective - I am much more comfortable in higher ranges rather than low ones. This is actually one of the things I am working on right now - gaining power and control in lower ranges wink.gif

Regarding the pattern - I see a lot of punk music tongue.gif That's what I was referring to and the fact that you have a very good punk music voice. You have to chisel it nevertheless and what I think you should aim for at this point, would be reaching the correct pitches immediately as you are singing those notes.

You have moments when you sing something and gain the pitch after a few tens of seconds smile.gif Once you find your comfort zone, it'll be better and then we will learn how to push that limit together wink.gif

BAM!
The german guy is back!

I had to get some new recording equipment, it all works much better now smile.gif

I also messed around with the keys a bit, I am still not 100% sure in which key I feel most comfortable...but I'll keep messing around with that. I guess it's somewhere between C and D, but not for all songs...weird.
Anyways, here are my new recordings. I am also posting some german songs, since I know some of my fellow germans will check this thread as well (not looking at Jessi and Marc and Dieter at all, though... wink.gif )

Hey Christiaaaan!

Man, this is much better and if you noticed, it also helped you pronounce better! The fact that you are a german native helps a lot at singing, simply because of your natural habit of biting the words! I think that the tonalities fit you - aside from the Green Day one, which can be a little higher I think smile.gif

I loved the Manic Street Preachers tune - it's one of my favorites smile.gif

As a general conclusion - you should start working on finer details such as note length, accentuating some of the words, singing softly or more aggressive - try to tell a story when you sing, mate!

I guess this could be a great idea for a video chat session, eh?

Posted by: Gitarrero Jun 7 2013, 01:25 PM

Thank you very much biggrin.gif
A friend of mine also told me I could sing the Green Day song higher, I will try that!

And yes, you should make a video chat session about this! I may have a reached a point where I need to hear what I should change/improve...in the meantime, more stuff will follow soon, as I noticed my singing improves the more I do it.
Wonder if the same is true for my guitar skills? tongue.gif

So, how is your singing career coming along?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 7 2013, 01:37 PM

True indeed man - the more you sing, the more you discover your possibilities - my singing career is going very well - I am practicing daily at leas 1 hour and each Thursday, I am having skype lessons with my dutch instructor biggrin.gif

I will soon start filming the acoustic covers so stay tuned yourself biggrin.gif in the mean time, what else do you got in yer bag, eh? biggrin.gif

Posted by: mad Jun 7 2013, 02:29 PM

Sorry for hijacking this - just wanted to say this is just awesome Christian smile.gif good work with those covers!

Posted by: Gitarrero Jun 7 2013, 04:28 PM

Thanks Marc biggrin.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 8 2013, 09:38 AM

Congratulating someone is anything but hijacking! Welcome back mate biggrin.gif I was wondering where you have disappeared?

Posted by: Gitarrero Jun 8 2013, 08:27 PM

Are you ready for some more german madness?

As requested by a friend of mine, I recorded another full cover of My Immortal. This one is much better than the first one, but I'm still not really happy with my singing on this.
More acoustic covers are in the making!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 9 2013, 02:03 PM

Christian, my good man biggrin.gif

Congratulations for a very nice arrangement and interpretation! In my fair opinion - it's still a bit too low for ya smile.gif You can sing higher and it's pretty clear to me, that you would be much closer to your comfort zone. You are not yet that expressive in this range and there were some little missed notes in the guitar playing biggrin.gif See 0:05

Try to pitch up the backing track with 1 half step and then even one whole step and see how your voice feels in that tonality biggrin.gif

Looking forward to hear more songs and your impressions on this one wink.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: Gitarrero Jun 9 2013, 02:46 PM

Thanks Cosmin!

Yeah, I noticed that missed note when I was done with everything and was too lazy to fix it biggrin.gif

Didn't think I could sing it higher...until you told me, and I tried. And guess what?! Ze Romanian was right!

Now...how do I pitch this thing up in Reaper? I'll try to figure that out.

Darn technology eh? biggrin.gif

For real biggrin.gif

now for something completely different, I recorded a take for your Industrial collab! What do you think of it?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 10 2013, 08:32 AM

I think it fits like a glove! biggrin.gif

Efficient and beautifully not delicate - just like German industrial metal, eh? biggrin.gif

There is such a thing as German industrial metal?
I had no clue that we have bands in that style! tongue.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 10 2013, 09:59 AM

There is one called ... Rammstein, if I am not mistaken?

Oh, what a coincidence...they are playing at the Southside Festival, so I'm gonna see them in two weeks :DBut yeah, my take was Rammstein-inspired.
Oomph! is another German industrial band you might wanna check out.

Posted by: Gitarrero Jun 10 2013, 08:11 PM

I found out how to pitch tracks in Reaper biggrin.gif luckily it was simple, so ze lazy german recorded a new vocal track right away biggrin.gif

https://soundcloud.com/gitarrero/my-immortal-full-cover-new

And here is the acoustic version:

and another song I am practicing right now, so far away by Staind. I haven't fully memorized it yet, so the vocal melody differs from the original version...but it's a work in progress.

edit: I played this one 1 full tone higher than usual and I think I really pushed my boundaries here...and I realized I should warm-up when singing this high, cause my voice was a little sore afterwards.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 11 2013, 09:44 AM

Christian, please set the Youtube links so that I may be allowed to watch biggrin.gif

Mate - I think you should focus on having a little more power when singing longer notes smile.gif A lot of strength will come if you use your back muscles - imagine that you squeeze two oranges under your armpits when having to sustain longer notes, ok? Let me know if you can feel the strength of your back muscles coming to your aid, ok? Once you get this going, learn how to control the level of effort and use it in various degrees, in respect to the intensity of the singing - low intensity + less back support -> high intensity + increasing back support.

Deal?

Cosmin

Posted by: Gitarrero Jun 11 2013, 07:05 PM

The youtube links are watchable now biggrin.gif

Thanks for the advice, I was wondering how to support the long notes, I'm pretty sure your advice will help me! Let me try it a few times, then I'll give you some feedback.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 12 2013, 07:20 AM

Aahh, the Staind song smile.gif Aaron happens to be one of my favorite vocalists and yes, you should definitely warm up - I will show you some tricks of course - in the next video wink.gif

Hey there my Deutschelandian friend biggrin.gif

Check this out:

Posted by: Gitarrero Jun 13 2013, 06:16 PM

Thanks my romanian friend!

I think I get what you mean...still have to get comfy with using the back muscles. I tend to squeeze too much and then I sound like I was in the gym and trying to sing at the same time...which doesn't sound good.

But I'll get there!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 15 2013, 02:50 PM

Great! It would be awesome if you could record a video in which I can see your whole body while singing - you know, the Estil Voice Training System is all about learning how to use your body to power up and perfectly control your singing smile.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Jun 17 2013, 05:27 PM

Will do!

I think I am getting the hang of it slowly...still have to figure out how much pressure to use, but I feel it's getting better.

Now, do you usually record your vocals standing up? Cause I always sit down when I sing (mostly because I can't put a strap on my acoustic guitar)...

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 18 2013, 08:50 AM

Always standing mate! Always! I will tell you about other techniques - one of them being called 'anchoring' which will provide even more power and sustain. But it needs you to stand up smile.gif

Listen, I was thinking, can you record yourself standing up and singing a selection of parts from various songs that require different levels of back muscle effort - as you see them? smile.gif It would help you build up a comparison and know your body a little better in respect to singing wink.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Jun 25 2013, 09:14 PM

Hey Cosmin!

Here are two more videos. First a cover of a boysetsfire song, I really love that one.
And the second video is the one you requested...

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 27 2013, 09:12 AM

hey Krise!!

I see more power coming out of you but still, you are not even 40% there biggrin.gif The power that your body will give you will be more and more obvious once you realize where your comfort zone is and especially once you realize how to open your throat - that is a technique called belting. It's not easy to master it and I for one still have moments when I feel I can't hold a realistic grasp on it, so I won't bring it up just yet.

For now - in order to bring more clearness in your singing, try to emit the sounds while holding a pencil in your moth - all that you sing must come from OVEr the pencil and not underneath it smile.gif

In the first vid, your tendency of not bringing the sound forward is most obvious, so please practice singing, without the guitar at first, with the pencil - don't worry about the words, but try to sing with vowels and imagine how the sound is emitted in such a way that it goes over the pencil not under.

Ok? smile.gif These things have a tendency to sound a bit mysterious and unclear sometimes, but trust me - singing, more than any other instrument, is based on learning how to control and feel your body!

I can see you using your back muscles in the second video, but you can do much more - it still feels like you are holding back smile.gif Tell a story when singing, don't sing without intention! It's like in sword play - never execute a form just for the sake of executing it, do it with the intention to cut down your opponent!

Posted by: PosterBoy Jun 27 2013, 05:11 PM

What a brave man you are Christian, putting yourself out there in the big wide world with your vocal progress.

If you don't mind me butting in here and there.

As Cosmin said about using your back muscles, You are breathing in and filling your chest with air, this will constrict and tighten your throat/chest vocal chords etc, your shoulders shouldn't move, breath from your belly!

Posted by: Gitarrero Jun 27 2013, 05:40 PM

Creepy, my thread got hacked by an irish dude!!!

Just kidding, I'm really greatful for your input! As everone else, I'm here to learn and I'm glad for every advice I can get.
As usual, I tried your tipp right away and it really helped, so thanks a lot PB!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 28 2013, 07:55 AM

PB is right, you should use your belly or diaphragm as it is scientifically called, to push the air from - don't sing with the air coming out of your chest - for instance all those nifty fry screaming examples you might've seen are done by pushing the air from the diaphragm.

Alongside with your back muscles it will give your singing a lot of power!

Was ist das?

The german is reviving this thread with a bunch of new vocal covers biggrin.gif

two german songs:

And if you've made it this far, you deserve a special treat:

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Mar 16 2014, 02:58 PM

Her Christian - it looks like you had A LOT of spare time on yer hands biggrin.gif

Mate, I can hear improvement smile.gif Your vocal technique is a bit more rounded than before and you chose a wide range of songs. I particularly enjoyed the Vertical Horizon one. Watch out, as there are still some little note height issues, which are the most obvious in the Adelle cover smile.gif

Otherwise, I would like to see more complex guitar arrangements. I feel that you have reached a moment in which you need to push your arranging skills a bit smile.gif

What do you think?

I also have two live versions of Billy Jean and The Best of You that I have performed 2 weeks ago in a charity event:
