Whats a wagger?
Posted by: quadrium Feb 13 2012, 12:38 AM
Hmm.. I'd be honoured if you gonna mentor me C-Maestro
My strongest technique is alternate picking And i am pretty good at vibratos and legatos i guess. But i feel like they can be improved much more My weakest technique is sweep picking so i'd like to master it as soon as possible Also i want to learn hybrid picking since i know you are pretty good at it As for my prefered music styles, i like to play rock/metal most. Also i like blues and country
Thats it Looking forward to start

Hi Cosmin
My very own thread ! That makes me happy
I've been playing for quite a few years but I've only ever been a chord strummer really. I know the open chords and I know barre chords. I have played rhythm in a few bands. I know the penatonic scales in the 5 positions and can noodle around in them, but I don't have any great speed or have a load of licks that I can pull off.
I've only been a member for a few days and I've been doing this lesson http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/open-chords-rock-rhythm/ which I can do OK and this one http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Blues-Rhythm-Guitar/ which I'm finding a bit more challenging but I'm getting there. Looking around at the lessons on the site I think level 3 lessons are probably right for me at this stage.
I played piano for a while so I have some theory knowledge although I'm no expert by any means.
Musically in order I'm into Rock, indie, blues. I'm open minded and I'd also like to do some country, metal, classical - anything really.
Ideally I want to practise for an hour a day.
I hope that's enough information for you. I'm really loving the site so far and can't wait to get some structure into my learning.
Thanks for your help.

Hey man! glad we can start together! First of all, can I ask your name?
Now, my idea would be to select lessons and discuss them together as you advance. One lesson per week would be great for starters the way I would make sure you are blazing it, is of course the REC section
So, what do you think if we would go on this road ?
as soon as you let me know we can start and one more thing, it would help me a lot if you could show me something recorded featuring your playing
all the best

Hi Cosmin
My name's Andy. Point me to my first lesson and let me loose
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Feb 13 2012, 08:47 PM
Alrighty Andy!
For starters, since you have already tackled those lessons you were telling me about earlier in the thread, I suggest you prepare REC takes for both of them, so that I may see a recorded performance after that, it shall be a lot easier to know where to start from
Do you think you can prepare them until Sunday? Posting the REC takes on Sunday would be great and if you have no experience with this idea, go ahead and ask away whatever it is you would need to know
Regarding the lessons, are there any particular questions you would like to ask?
all the best

Right now I'm overwhelmed with the collabs and other stuff I have to do, and also I'm recording a new song with my band, but as soon as I get more free time I'd love to learn some of your guitar wisdom because you are a really awesome instructor. I'll contact you as soon as I finish this stuff and thanks a lot for the opportunity my friend, really appreciate it.
@Andy: Sorry mate, I won't spam inside your topic anymore And good luck with practicing, with Cosmin you can't go the wrong way

I guess I post my take in the REC forum. I just went in there to test it out. I assume you start a new thread and there's a button to post your take ? Anyway I got this error :
The error returned was: Sorry, you do not have permission to start a topic in this forum

You can't open topics directly in the REC board. You need to open the lesson and click on the button "Post your take". Then the topic will be created, and the poll, along with all other needed information about the lesson will be added automatically

Too old to be this bad at guitar
I've tried another take. I think it's better in terms of less ringing notes and crisper chord changes. I hope so anyway !
My sound quality isn't great because I just have a cheap pc mic going into my laptop. I do have a Presonus Firebox and some decent mics but my laptop doesn't have a firewire port so I think I'm stuck with the pc mic hanging in front of my amp. I also adjusted the intonation of my guitar so hopefully it will sound less out of tune.
I hope this is worth an extra half point so I can move on and learn something new Come on man....it is my birthday after all

This is definitely better! The chord changes are clear and the notes are definitely much more defined than the last time so I think you can get start working on another, but do not leave this one unattended rehearse it at least once or twice each day and try another take after some time you will have a surprise most certainly.
You were telling me about another lesson you were tackling which one was that?
Cosmin
PS: why don't you post this again in the RC section? It'll get a good grade for certain

If the blues lesson has some lead playing in it, I would be curious to see how you're dealing with it if not, please let me know, as I'd like to know how your lead playing is, thus I'll point you to a lead oriented lesson at your level!
What do you think?

No lead playing - it's this one http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Blues-Rhythm-Guitar/
I think they encompass a lot of important techniques and they can develop your skills!
Tell me which one you like and find close at hand for learning, so we shall focus on that one

It's not too bad. I'm fairly OK up until the last lick before the turnaround. That's quite fast for me and I'm struggling with the timing even when I slow it down.

Take your time man! I'd rather have you take a wee bit more time and get things done awesomely than rush and not get the good stuff going slow is ALWAYS good and another thing, have you tried to sing the lead parts?

Posted by: waggers Feb 19 2012, 09:42 PM
It's the fast bit on video 7 until the end that I'm having trouble with. At the moment I can just about play it at 45 bpm which is half speed. The rest of it I am OK with and can play at normal speed.
Have you got any tips for me to get this ? Going from 45 to 90 bpm seems a long way away

Well if you increase 3 beats per minute every day, and get to play that phrase 3-5 times in a row, you'll handle it very well in a relatively short period of time. 45 divided by three means 2 weeks. Here's what I suggest: record a take with everything up to the nasty lick and work on it for two weeks, by increasing 3 BPM/ day so that you may nail it right. Don't increase unless you can control everything perfectly, k?
Are we ready?

Hey Cosmin
I can just about do it at 60bpm now, although I sometimes still struggle a bit changing from the turnaround to the G9 and F#9 at the end - I find them quite difficult chords to play quickly and cleanly.
I estimate that getting to 90 bpm will take me about 100 years - that fast bit is..........................well, fast
Is there something else I can be doing while I'm learning this ? I might just go bat crazy if this is all I have to practise for a long time

Hey mate, well, in the mean time, I was thinking that this one is an awesome starting point for your pentatonic knowledge, which is essential in blues playing -> http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/pentatonic-workshop-level1-caged-format-timing-exercises/
This is the first part from a very good series by Ivan, take a look these are the building blocks with which you can start honing your pentatonic chops, so I suggest you tackle these in the mean time. They'll complement the solo you are working on

I'm OK improvising using pentatonics, but I don't have a load of licks to fall back on and I'm not very fast.
I only know the major scale in the first position.

This is a good exercise try this:
- sing the C major scale over a C major chord than over a CM7 chord and so on with the following: Cmaj6/9 CM7/9, Cmajadd9
Now, I also wanted to ask if you are ok with chord theory? All these are ear training exercises which are going to help a lot! If you understand the structure of these chords, you can emphasize the notes which you find in the chord structure and in the C major scale, by holding them a while longer than the others sounds challenging?

Still practising ! I'm really struggling with the blues soloing. I can do it at 81bpm but I'm finding it very hard to move up to 84 - the end part is just too quick for me
Any tips ?

Hey there mate well, those 3 BPM's you are aiming for should be given more time probably - I say aim for increasing 1 BPM right after you can play at 81 BPM without feeling absolutely NO TENSION or difficulty. 1 BPM will not be perceived as a major change for the brain thus you will not feel it. Can you play fully relaxed at 81 BPM?

I wouldn't say I'm 'fully relaxed' at 81 bpm I think there must be something wrong with me........the end bit before the turnaround seems too fast for my limited skills.
I'll keep working on it

With a little patience you will get there, but first of all, relaxation is the key even if it means slowing things down a bit

Hi Cosmin
I've posted a take in the REC forum. I'm not expecting high marks for this, but at least I'm trying

Lemme take a look man! Don't worry, even if you will get a small grade, it will help you evolve no one here grades and doesn;t give something in return If I were young again, I would've happily taken bad grades, just to find out what I can improve and HOW So, how r ya man? How's life treating ya?
Check out the REC zone and let's see the exact spots where you have to fix stuff in the take

Hey Cosmin
Some good advice on my take. I've nearly got an 8 which is fine by me ! I've been doing that exercise for a while now. I'll keep on it but can you please give me another to get my teeth into to stop me going crazy !

Hey mate, sure thing - let me know what you'd prefer: lead or rhythm? Depending on your choice, I shall look something up so that it may help you improve a step more we should go in these directions, so that you may cover as much ground as possible

Hey Andy! I would like to suggest some work on the bending and vibrato in lead, working a bit with this lesson which is easy and doable but focuses on the task at hand
what say you? If you don't like it we can try another one

Hey Cosmin
I've posted my take in the REC section, although looking at it I don't think I've really got much vibrato. I was more concerned with getting the notes right

Hey mate! Let's check it out
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 16 2012, 01:33 PM
Alrightie! My friend, you have to slow things down, to start with
What do you say if you would send me separate takes with each part, at 50 % of the speed focus on timing, tightness and articulation, k?
It seems a bit tedious but I guarantee results

Here you go Cossie - it sounds quite painful at half speed

Hey mate!
You are on the right track but you need to get rid of the bending and vibrato done with the fingers. Try using your wrist for a change and the results will be far better. Also, at about 0.52 there's a not sounding a bit loose.
All in all your left hand should be more confident when playing - the timing was good but the notes sounded a bit week somehow.
Let's try the same take having in mind the things above. Practice them before recording and of course, let me know if you have problems with working from the wrist

Hi Cosmin
I do have problems doing vibrato with the wrist. Do you have any tips or help you can give me ?
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 19 2012, 12:06 PM
Hey mate, sure!
The whole deal is to lock your fingers on the note you are vibrating and produce a vertical motion or elipsoidal one!
Here are some very good tips and ideas from our dear Mr. Higgins - take a look and let me know what your thoughts on this would be
I'm really struggling here Cosmin I can't seem to do what Ben is doing, and in the original video by Emir (the one that I'm trying to do) he is clearly moving the strings up and down to get the vibrato, whereas Ben seems to be moving his wrist from side to side but the string is staying still.
It's driving me a bit crazy now
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 20 2012, 07:47 AM
Mate, there are different kinds of vibrato, Ben's is elipsoidal as I have described in my last post while Emir's is vertical as you have noticed.
If you want Emir's you have to go with fixing your thumb on the upper side of the neck (the anchor you need to pivot your wrist) then fret the not which you want to vibrate with your ring finger, while the middle and index are supporting by fretting right behind the middle finger on the same string.
The index can be held in such a way that it only touches the strings - it will mute unwanted noise.
Now with this position move your wrist up and down describing a vertical motion
This is how I see it - does it work for you ?

Hey Cosmin
Thanks for doing this. Unfortunately I hurt my back a week ago and haven't been able to practise. I should be ok soon and will carry on with trying to nail it.
