When practicing scales and with the metronome is it better to practice in the clean channel or with distortion?

I always use distortion, but i was wondering what everyones thoughts were on this and what everyone else is doing..

Sometimes when its something new that your learning, Its good to use clean because you hear your mistakes more easily, And when your getting the hang of it, switch to distortion. I just do the first 20 minutes or so in clean, then the next in distortion, balance it off.

It's important to do both.

As The Uncreator already mentioned you hear your mistakes easier when you're playing clean. Another way to put this is to say that notes 'get lost' sometimes when we only play in distortion.

However, it's important to play with distortion too because it helps you play cleaner due to the need to mute strings and fret/pick cleaner when the gain is higher.

I practice both as well. Clean let's me hear my mistake's and distortion let's me hear all the harmonic's I want to add. Also help's me develope different sense's of melody within the given scale.

As said earlier its important to practice on clean channel , you will allow you to hear better and gain better sound control..Than if you want you can switch to dist channel.

I use only clean. I don't really like distortion. I prefer to practice clean due to tone and playing Jazzy stuff sounds better smile.gif

I go for a high presence sound, rather than distortion personally smile.gif Either way, I feel its important to practice with a distorted tone if thats how your going to play it live. This is because you need to learn how to mute what your playing correctly, for example of you played a sweep picking lick clean, you might think your a sweep master untill you put the distortion back on wink.gif

Well I never really practice with my amp turned on, it would be too much of a hassle for me. I think you can in reality practice everything unplugged. If it is quiet you'll hear every mistake you make.

I do the same thing lately. I used to plug into my toneport GX when I wanted to practice but now I mostly do it unplugged, but thats because I LOVE the sound my hollow chambered les paul gets acoustically, it sounds wonderful.

But in reality I do practice plugged in sometimes. You need to practice everything, including clean and distorted. If you start to play clean more, and especially make music that utilizes clean tones, you'll discover a whole other dimension to your playing. When you play cleanly, theres a lot more you can do in terms of chording and dynamics that you can't do heavily distorted IMO. So do both smile.gif

If I wanna get something clean and tight, I practice it with distortion. Much harder to keep things clean with distortion then without tongue.gif

Im with you there Mark, there is the danger of turning distortion back on and finding out your not the guitar god you thought you were laugh.gif laugh.gif

On the flip side, if your practicing other styles of music, like blues for example maybe clean is the way to go smile.gif

Yeah, it's a fine balance to go between gain or no gain when you practice. I practice perhaps 60-40..with 60% being with gain and 40 without.

@Mattacuk: Nice touch in your signature with Mr. Big.. Just finished my music-exam and played that song for the practical part, singing and guitar. Had a friend for backing guitar during the solo...well, nuff said, I got an A+. laugh.gif

Warm ups/stretches: Clean
Speed/alternate picking: Distortion due to having to mute strings - letting the string ring out cleanly doesn't sound as bad as is does with distortion
Legato: Distortion - same as above
Sweep picking/arpeggios: Distortion - same as above
Tapping: Distortion - same as above
Chords/harmony: A little of both - to get a hang of harmony clean is good, and a lot of chords work nicely both distorted and clean.

That was just from the top of my head. I may have left something out.

good points, but here's some counterpoints wink.gif

Speed/alternate picking: Clean, due to the fact that you'll notice if your upstrokes and downstrokes has the same dynamics. Clean due to that you'll put more emphasis on your attack.

Legato: Clean because you need to make sure that every note rings even when playing clean. Same goes with tapping.

Sweeping: Clean due to that you need to make sure that you aren't losing attack when sweeping. You also want to make sure that you're sweeping LOUD! biggrin.gif

Chords/harmony: Clean because you might not notice that you're blocking a note when barring if you play distorted. Distortion, because you still want to be able to play it with distortion, muting and stuff.

Well, indeed, there are counterpoints to all probably. For me, I've always found that clean picking tends to sound good, but when distorted it takes a lot more "practice" to make sure strings are muted properly. If two strings ring out at the same time, it's not as noticable when playing clean as it is distorted. At least that's how I see it.

To sum things up; one should probably play all things both clean and distorted. wink.gif

I practice almost always without an amp these days because it sounds so crap with an amp, it's really difficult to play when it's on because the tone you get from it when soloing is just pure crap. But it helps me getting a nice and clean technique ;D

Gonna buy a better amp pretty soon biggrin.gif
