I'm doing my last year in the upper secondary school, it's kind of focused on IT, but we get to choose alot of the subjects aswell, so I'm taking a lot of math and physics aswell. (And I just realised that all that is horribly boring, but meh) tongue.gif

So far, there are quite a few different fields that we all do...

I'm an ISF certified Elite Service Specialist for the Geek Squad in the Home Theater division. I do full home theater installations, commercial installations, home networking and integration and also calibrate TV's using Sencore equipment to get your TV to perform at it's best.

I definitely can't complain, considering I'm a high school and college drop out tongue.gif And, in fact, I actually enjoy my job for the most part...

I do paid work 1 day a week supervising and examining PhD students and undertaking and publishing my own research as articles in academic journals and as books. I also do unpaid work copy-editing and technical editing for a number of academic journals and publishers.

Non-academic stuff - I run a small recording studio focused on recording, re-recording and mixing (I don't tend to Master) and also assist my wife when she needs audio/recording engineering on her media projects. (Her non academic work is media training and PR.)

Some stuff I've done in the past - senior management consultant for a big international consultancy; various middle and senior management roles in different organisations; analytical chemist/lab manager specialising in identification and quantification of ultra low level trace pesticides by MS; session musician; roadie; various roles in recording studios; bar/pub work.

I've been a pilot for a major US airline for the past 10 years. Currently flying the B767 mostly in the Pacific to places like Hawaii, Guam, and Japan. Some European and South American flying as well. Not quite the rock star's life....but close!

The flying itself can be fun and challenging sometimes..depends on the rest of the crew..some guys are cool, some are pretty uptight. I'm pretty burned out on the rest of the aspects of the industry though..the pay cuts, lost pensions, security since 9/11 have pretty much taken the glamour out of it for sure. I was on a Lufthansa flight going to Germany to visit the grandparents in the late 60's and was allowed to visit the cockpit inflight and talk to the pilots..I was about 5 or 6 years old at the time...and just knew that that's what I wanted to do when I grew up. I still haven't grown up by the way!!!!

The fear of flying is most definitely something that should be taken seriously! I have a lot of respect for people that have an extreme fear of flying but still do it. It takes a lot of courage... And unfortunately a lot of people don't understand it's not something you can just say "Get over it".

HaHa I hear ya man!! We actually get that from some people..and they'll tell us before the flight how terrified they are. We explain to them what they can expect in the flight and noises they might hear and how things generally work with the airplane itself. Alot of times when they can put a face to the guys that are flying the airplane they feel a little better. You could take an introductory flight in a small airplane and they usually let you fly the plane itself for a little while...sometimes just doing it takes away some of the fear. Trust me....I don't want to go down in flames either..I'll be one of the first to the scene of the accident if you know what I mean!!!!

Hehehe yeah, seeing the ground closing in from the cockpit - not a fun scene for sure biggrin.gif

That's a great job! I have a flying fear myself and i traveled by plane a year ago, from Croatia to Moscow - around 3 hours flight, i already said "Goodbye" to myself during the take-off and though something like: "Well, if the plane crashes, than it's just meant to be that way for me!" and than i was pretty comfortable during the flight. Night flights are the worst in my opinion - you just take off and go to big giant nowhere!

The thing is - you have much bigger chances of dying in the car than an airplane. Jet crashes happen like once a week while car crashes are like 100,000 each day.

Yea exactly m8! ,my wifes Uncle has a light aircraft and he took me up in that, I thought I was pretty brave agreeing to it to be honest, it wasnt too bad coz it was a beautiful day and it wasnt too bumpy but I was still bricking it (if you know what I mean), he usually goes up for an hour`ish I managed twenty mins before I asked him if we could go down, I`ve tried hypnotherapy for it too, but that didnt do anything, I thought maybe if I could go visit the cockpit during a flight then it may help but so far on the two occassions that I`ve asked they`ve said no mad.gif I`d love to go to Tobago or somewhere exotic, my wife doesnt mind the flying and I feel I`m depriving her of that kind of holiday coz of my fear, but I cant help it, I truly am scared of it, as buckjones said, its very hard to explain, soo many people I get annoyed with that say rubbish to me before we go on holiday, just makes it worse sad.gif

That's exactly right Pavel...the most dangerous part about flying is the drive to the airport!!!

Nothing to be ashamed of or sorry for...everyone is a little different. My wife's best friend's mother is the same way. She does take some sort of medication for it..I can find out and get back to you...but it works pretty well for her and they travel quite a bit by air.

I work for a lawn service right now. Nice job with free food, but I could never imagine myself doing it the rest of my life. The only downside to it is that my boss likes listening to horrible, horrible music ( southern gospel and other junk like tha dry.gif t).
