I picked up an '06 DV8-R new on saturday for $700 USD (which I thought was a screaming deal, live wire actives, string through/neck thru construction, sperzel locking tuners, tonepro TOM, JD flushmount strap locks, you can read the full review here)
I was just curious since the necks in the VMNTs are set and not neck-thru if it hurt the tone/sustain at all, as is the DV8-R has the most tone and sustain of any of my guitars. That's why I was curious if my next purchase should be a VMNT1 or a full on DV8. I already know I like the neck on the DV8, that D shaped badboy is perfect for me. I can get a VMNT1 for $999 new, a good condition DV8 seems to be going for 1200-1500 on eBay w/ all the case candy. Personally, I love the King V shape. I'm a big dude and the shape gives me playability no other shape I've played yet has given me. It's so balanced and lightweight when you play standing up but the tone is really heavy and the sustain goes on for ages. The live wires are probably my new pickup of choice. I can't see how either model would clearly outshine my current one, with the only difference in the DV8 and the DV8R being an ebony as opposed to rosewood fingerboard and probably better wood in the body. The VMNT1 has Mini Grovers, which I think are average. The Sperzels are incredible. the VMNT1 has the Live Wires and is mahogany too, so it might be a nice pick up, if the sustain and tone is as good as it's ESP counterpart. I was curious if anybody had played the other 2 and would recommend holding out for a good condition Jackson KV1 or Y2KV. The funny thing is I'm not a huge Dave Mustaine fan at all really, but this shape guitar breathed new life into my playing. -------------------- "King V" enthusiast
