It's important to understand the note values when doing metronome practice. It will made your job of practicing a lot easier.
My method of using metronome is by using simple measures like 4/4 which means 4 quarter notes per bar. This means that there is one whole note in a bar and values can be easily put in a bar like this: | 4/4 bar| |1 whole note| 4 clicks 1 note |2 half notes| 2 clicks 1 note |4 quarter notes| 1 click 1 note |8 eight notes| 1 click 2 notes |12 eight note triplets| 1 click 3 notes |16 sixteen notes| 1 click 4 notes |24 sixteen note triplets| 1 click 6 notes when you start practicing it is good idea to start from slow tempos and big note values so you don't get lost, and gradually increase the note values as you go along. So you can start by doing half notes for example, at 60 bpm. And then when you come to 120bpm you go to quarter notes etc. This way you won't get lost in a beat.
