GMC Forum _ Ben Higgins _ High Risk Collaboration !
Posted by: Ben Higgins Jun 3 2011, 11:33 AM
Hi Guys, it's about time I did a collab isn't it ??
You'll recognise the backing from my Set The Pace lesson and as quite a few of you have enjoyed playing along to it, or just listening to it I thought it made sense to use it and get you guys unleashing your ideas over it !
To give it an identity of it's own I'm calling it 'High Risk' because it sounds dangerous !!
Set_the_Pace_105bpm.mp3 ( 1008.55K )
: 635 Here's the backing. It's 105bpm and about 1:20 long. You don't have to solo over all of it.. you can do as much or as little as you want. It also doesn't have to be solo orientated, maybe you would like to do something rhythm based ? (Maybe it's about time Bogdan did a bass solo ??)
The main key of the tune is Bminor so you can use B Aeolian or B Minor Pentatonic..
Upload any takes here.. one with backing & one with just your solo channel isolated. When you get around to recording videos just inbox them to me with a rapishare/yousendit/whatever site you use link
And of course, I would like to say now that is open to everyone and anyone.. all abilities.. don't feel like you have to be an experienced player or an experienced GMC user. Join in the fun and let's see what madness we end up with
Let's make a deadline of Sunday 3rd July ------------------------ edit -
...AND THE RESULT:

Took me some time to improvise a solo I was satisfied with, but in the end I just settled for this take
I'm thinking of giving this a try, as I have some ideas at least for the second part. I never recorded a video, however, so I guess I'll have to set things up first.

Thanks! It is still a bit unusal for me, but I am getting used to it the more I play. The first thing that is easily noticable, is much easier vibrato, bending 2-3 halfnotes anywhere on the neck (even on the bass-strings, lol), and being able to play solos with bending, (like this) continuously for three hours without my fingers screaming in pain
Do you have some recommendation about sites I could use to send the video to you?

Ok, so I came up with a little melody over (first half of) the backing track, practiced for some time, then ran into a series of obstacles when trying to shoot the whole thing. Video formats, transferring video data, audio synchronizing, video editing software, etc were making the beginner look like a fool. It didn't turn out exactly the way I wanted, but I created a YouTube account and uploaded the video. It seems to be out of sync, which is not the case when I play the uploaded file locally. Oh well, here it is.
Ben: I'm not really good at shredding, but I did it anyway. I threw in some riffing too. It was really random and kinda bad at times. I just let loose and came up with this after a zillion takes. You may wanna put me in the background. I hate my cheap Infinity pickups. They make some of my pinch harmonics sound like crud. Just take what you want, because I know not all of it will sound good. Thanks for the opportunity. I'm sending you a megaupload link to the video in a PM.
Everybody else: Here is the uploaded version so everyone can see what I did. I decided to solo over the whole thing so Ben can pick what he wants. This is why I don't join many collabs. I always embarrass myself.
Think I am gonna jump in on this one if you don't mind and if there is room. Got some ideas rolling around after seeing everyone else's take. And if we harmonize, do you want the harmony file separate?

Hungry that's awesome.. I love it ! Check out those geetars laying in the stand - rock n roll !
That's ok, I'm pretty good at synching up audio and video and I'll have to put all the audio in separately anyway so for anyone who's worried about audio/video being slightly out, don't worry.. I can fix that at the editing stage
Yes, just send it through rapidshare or yousendit.com It's pretty easy to ake an account, I think you just need an email address. Rapidshare is the easiest.

HI all
Here's my entry. Just bought this wah pedal (Modtone Vintage) and I had to used it here.
I've finally gotten a chance to start working with this track and let me say I LOVE it. It's one of the best written tracks, especially for solo work that I"ve ever come across. The song construction is really, really good. Dynamics, tonal balance, modal parity, phrasing. Nice work Ben! I hope I get the chance to Collab with you on an entire track at some point! For now, I"m thrilled to put a solo on this.
Posted by: Todd Simpson Jun 28 2011, 05:40 AM
I went WAAAAAY Over the top on this one It was fun. Dualing speed picking intro, dualing harmony mid section, then crazy guitar/synthetic thing at the end. I played around a ton with Guitar Rig 4 and threw all manner of FX on this. It was amazingly fun. And just KILLER to solo over.
Ha, that was freaking awesome. I gotta know, is that last bit done all one GR4? Cause that is one awesome sound man.

Yes, I'm not surprsied if they hid. It's the sensible thing to do when Marek The Mighty is wandering the land.
Castle ruins, campfires, canoes...? Sounds pretty good to me......

Thanks It's a really simple technique. Shoot yourself doing your solo. Then shoot yourself again. Bring both videos in to whatever you are using and turn the opacity of the first one down to 75 percent or so. That way you can see through it a bit. You can add as many layers as you like. I"m hoping this inspires folks to push themselves in terms of their video technique. Just like guitar, it's all about repetition and practice.
Can't wait to see how the finals turn out!

Thanks again The solo is actually done with a similar technique. I double the parts in spots and sometimes play the same thing then play different things and pan it right and left so it creates stereo effects. The effect at the end is a Guitar Rig Patch called Shimmer Delay that I tweaked a bit. I'll post all the guitar rig patches in case anyone wants to try them out. The last solo is only oneguitar and it didn't pop enough so found that patch and it sounded almost like a keyboard backing the guitar. All of the solos are guitar rig so no Amplifiers or Speaker Cabs were injured during the making of this Collab
We are going to break down these licks in the Video Chat Lesson so stop by if you can!

Guys, I can't stress enough how incredible your entries have all been. I'm not going to want to cut anything out of the takes at all so it's going to be hard not to end up with a 10 minute guitar intrumental !!

its the first time for me, to be a part of a collaboration. Hope everything will be fine with my video! I focused on rhythm, so we have a mix between the crazy solos and bogdan/my rhythm Video. Hope you enjoy it, a little feedback would be nice!
[video is coming soon- there are some problems with youtube]
there are 4 takes which you can cut and chop in any way you wish i recorded the same structure 4 times so that you may use whichever you find suitable. I shall post the wav files tomorrow early in the morning, because honestly I can't keep my eyes open. Hope it's ok

Todd this is brutal !! You already know I love the solo so great job on the video !
Thanks The video was loads of fun to make. The video layering idea worked out really well. Sort of like the guitar layering!

Hey GMC,
its the first time for me, to be a part of a collaboration. Hope everything will be fine with my video! I focused on rhythm, so we have a mix between the crazy solos and bogdan/my rhythm Video. Hope you enjoy it, a little feedback would be nice!
[video is coming soon- there are some problems with youtube]
Hey Willy, thanks for getting involved !
Unfortunately my computer won't play .rar files.... is there any way you could make it a .wav or mp3 ? Even a .wma would work

Ben, rar is like zip, You need to unpack it with a program like WinRar, You can find a free test version on the web.

Hey mate! Here is the link where you can download my video files from
there are 4 takes which you can cut and chop in any way you wish i recorded the same structure 4 times so that you may use whichever you find suitable. I shall post the wav files tomorrow early in the morning, because honestly I can't keep my eyes open. Hope it's ok
Here are the wav files as promised
Cosmin, thank you.. I love it ! Great melodies and phrasing... that guitar looks so sexy too !

GREAT! Thank you very much!
BTW: Are you planning a new huge Collab in the next time (with Instructors/ Video/ "all" members), like the heavy water Collab?
Posted by: Ben Higgins Jul 21 2011, 03:25 PM
Hey Guys.. there's just some more rendering to do with some audio that needed fixing and then it should be ready for Kris and Bogdan to play with
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 21 2011, 03:33 PM
Can't wait to see the outcome mate

OK, Guys you might want to check out the front page !!
I just want to say a massive congratulations to you all for kicking major guitar ass ! It was so hard to choose what to leave out of the final mix.. keeping the overall song length down to a sensible time was the only reason to not use all of your whole takes.
You may notice that I placed some of your licks in a different place to how you recorded it.. that's the beauty of having 1 scale that can be played all over the composition. One reason why it took so long to finish was that I was having problems rendering the video in Sony Vegas. The actual editing was done quite quickly.. but for some reason, my computer wanted you all to wait. I hope you will all agree with me that it was worth it.
Instead of taking centre stage, I wanted this collab to showcase you, the students/ members. There was such good material there that I didn't need to do much myself.. so that goes to show what a great job you all did !
ENJOY
