GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ I Challenge Thee!

Posted by: Iluha Sep 19 2008, 08:37 PM

So after the Challenge thread started by Iainsteward onn Marcus Lavendell's board(http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=19689&st=0), it's time to bring the challenge to the main scene tongue.gif

I would like to challenge anyone, both instructors and members, to learn to play Guthrie Govan's infamous jam over the Larry Carlton track
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUZK9dasP8s
The challenge is to do it in one week! so good luck to whoever takes on this challenge! Personally I'm also trying to learn it but it will take me way more than a week to perfect it tongue.gif

Post you'r challenges here, and have fun smile.gif

Right, so after some thought, here are 3 more challenges for various skill levels:

Beginner : http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/blue-note-in-a/ A preety easy lesson by Muris, which will improve you'r phrasing, vibrato, and bending, and dynamic skills.

Intermidiate : http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/rock-blues-solo-in-Eb-minor/ First lesson by the new instructor Pedja Simovic, some unique blues solo ideas, which will give you a taste of fusion!

Advanced : http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/lesson-no-1000/ If you can Mimic Kris's unique Rythm sense, I salute you!

So have fun guys, you got one week! so practice hard and share you'r results next saturday!

Posted by: Marcus Lavendell Sep 19 2008, 08:40 PM

This will be interesting!! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Siggum Sep 19 2008, 08:45 PM

I love that solo, a bit hard, but good choice Iluha smile.gif

Edit: Is there anywhere you can dl that track

Posted by: chast Sep 19 2008, 08:45 PM

Awesome, good luck to master to everyone who want to master that jam smile.gif
Guthrie is so unbelievable good ._.

Posted by: Iluha Sep 19 2008, 08:46 PM

I guess you can buy it off Bluesjamtracks.com but the site seems to be down at the moment.. and you could also ask Tjchep for it since I know he has it smile.gif

If you want a tab, you can find it on ultimate guitar.

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Sep 19 2008, 08:48 PM

Oh my - I will be monitoring this! ohmy.gif laugh.gif

Posted by: Bogdan Radovic Sep 19 2008, 09:03 PM

This will be very exciting !! smile.gif
Looking forward to progress of this one! smile.gif

Posted by: Tolek Sep 19 2008, 09:25 PM

Good idea, Iluha! I just picked up my guitar and figured out the first few licks. I think it could be possible for me... smile.gif

Posted by: ItsMe Sep 19 2008, 09:31 PM

the whole solo can be found on ultimate guitar as a gp5 file. The transcription is 100 % accurate

I also recorded a backing that resembles the backing Guthrie uses very much. Means same tonality and the baseline is close. I'll upload it in the members only upload section. I call it Larrys Blues

Posted by: Tolek Sep 19 2008, 09:32 PM

I believe but I prefer developping my ears and figure out this improvisation by myself. What about you other GMCers? smile.gif

Well this kind of improvisation is too much for my ears =p so I'm sticking with the tab!

By the way, I thought about this. and I'm gonna edit the first post with 3 more challenges, Beginner level, Intermidiate, and advanced, and the current challenge will be in the Super Advanced category ph34r.gif

Posted by: coffeeman Sep 19 2008, 10:23 PM

Awesome Idea Iluha , I take the intermediate challenge.

In one week? ... you mean this year? ...smile.gif
It's a great idea, but i think i have to pass sad.gif .. Guthrie's version is just to hard, but i would love to hear some tracks !!

btw ... bluesjamtracks.com is still online and playing hours over the Larry Carlton track is worth the £0.99 wink.gif ... i just bought it 2 weeks ago and it's so much fun!!

Posted by: Muris Varajic Sep 20 2008, 12:32 AM

Problem with Guthrie's take is that it's 80% improvised,
even himself wouldn't play it the same way next time.
I might give it a try tho. smile.gif

Ahhh.. Muris, please do! biggrin.gif I'd love to see your take on that solo. That would be so cool!!

Posted by: Daniel Robinson Sep 20 2008, 08:25 AM

I tried learning this piece awhile back, let me try and give it another go. No promises here if i can't get it right i am not going to post it.

The biggest problem i had with it is the fret jumping he does, when moving laterally across the strings i don't have a problem doing fast passages. But when doing 3 string trill type stuff thats moving upwards i can't get the rhythm right cause my hand wants to stay anchored.

Muris, i doubt you would find any of this track too much of a challenge, there is nothing really difficult about it. Its not really fast, as you can hear i am sure. The trick is the rhythms he uses are a bit odd.

But like i said i will try it again, maybe i will have more success this time.

My biggest problem with it is the fast legato part around the middle of it.. I think it's more because of my guitar though, the spaces between my frets seem too small for my fingers.

Wrk: You should attempt the Advanced challenge than, I don't think it will pose too much trouble for you smile.gif

Well I'm not a member right now.. and probably won't be for the next few months, yeah I don't even have enough cash for a subscription tongue.gif
so maybe you can upload them, if that's even allowed.

Here's kind a test version,
I'm very pleased that you mentioned this Guthrie's Jem Iluha,
I've seen it few times but never really got deep into it. smile.gif

It's not totally the same as Guthrie's but let's say about 60%,
still need to work on some parts.
And video will be included I guess. wink.gif

Thanks Kuba. Im looking forward to hear Pedja opinion too, lets see what he says.

I just checked it out sorry I missed it earlier tonight!

It sounds good you nailed down the first part very well. Couple of small things I would try to correct are vibrato , position shifting (happens towards the end when you use your 1st and 2nd finger on the same 11th fret ) and rhythm for the last lick !

Other than that man you pretty much owned the solo good job!
I believe if you did couple more takes it would be 100% but this is awesome for something you learned in 24 hours or so , I am impressed - very good student - keep up the good work @ wink.gif

amazing take Muris, Guthrie is such an unbelievable player, definitely one of my favourites, I have seen some tabs of this floating around, I'll probably take a stab at learning some of the licks, it's definitely more advanced than my capabilities right now that's for sure

Very nice Muris, and now.....I have a challenge for two particular GMC instructors smile.gif

First off, for Kris......there is a piece I would love to see you try and its "Concerto" by Cacophony. Just the intro part with the sweep/alternate picking segment!!

Secondly, I would love to see Muris play a solo by Jeff Healey from a song called "I Tried". Its a beautiful solo and I cant find tabs anywhere, so hopefully if seeing Muris play it I could pick it up from the vid tongue.gif

Best Of Luck Guys,
Iain!!
