Probably in the 'ear of the beholder' kinda thing but I thought it would be interesting to hear what different peoples idea of a 'perfect' tone would be. The tone this dude has is probably one of the best Ive ever heard. Granted, if he is using some of the gear in the vid ( and why would you not! ) we are talking a '68 les paul and a dumble amp in the mix of other stuff so..... kinda exclusive stuff but, man, it sounds amazing!
any examples of your 'perfect' tone?

Gregor Hilden is one of my favorites too. In this video he has a great tone only with an overdrive (okko) and delay (spacetime) and Fender amp. What a tone! Of course he plays a Fender Strat here
And this tone is also very tasty!

That's some proper metal I was listening to 'jaws of life' from his suspended animation album, he sounds great on that track, not that he ever sounds bad!, but it sounds a lot like that tone.

That is stunning! I watch a lot of his videos on youtube and no matter what guitar he plays it always sounds amazing. He's ridiculously good.

Cool thread. I like all of the examples given here.
For me the amazing tone is the one that suits the mood of the backing/song and the guitarists playing style.
So its extremely 'relative' - and this is also the reason why using someone else's patch is not always the best idea (though it can be a great starting point).
Some examples of killer tones from our lessons - though very different.
Just listen to this (free software) based sound: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Ballad-Soloing-Dynamics-And-Phrasing/
Or this crunchy and super tight rhythm sound: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Metal-for-beginners-Megadeth-1/
Stephs on-the-verge-of break up sounds are epic. You can find them everywhere in his lessons, this one has lots of them: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/25-Jazz-Fusion-Licks/
Guido's well defined and crunchy JSX hi-gain delivers everytime, and shows how expressive hi-gain can be. Example http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Dorian-Meets-Mixo/
Sorry if this turned into a plug, I guess I am preaching to the choir

Great tonage is abundant with the GMC instructors. Its weird, I never used to care much for a single coil 'fender-ish' sound at all but over the last few years Ive totally got right into it. That Ballad lesson by Darius is a perfect example of awesome IMO. maybe Im just getting old but goddamnit I want a telecaster!!
* I also think Herman Ri is cool

Fell honored to me mentioned as example The "Single coil thing" seems to be common. I've been pretending Single doesn't exist for years but once that "switch" in my mind has switched and I bacame a fan of it

Some great examples!! Big shock, here comes some heavy bits
First up Eric Johnson with some single coil spiff
how about COC with some very spiff KRUNCH/CHUNK and serious groove to boot. VOTE WITH A BULLET
I just have to throw this in, as it's the start of my "Search for Tone" way back when Just the Barrrruuuttttz

I'm liking your tone personally Very organic and "Amp Sounding" not "processor sounding". Just keep pushing it Adding a compressor is a great idea on lead stuff. Is there a Multiband Compressor on the unit?

This is my favorite solo on Youtube. I watch this every time I feel down about my playing, it lifts my spirits. Danny Roffe managed get an amazing tone from relatively average equipment - a Vox Tonelab and an Alesis Quadraverb. He also uses a DiMarzio Pro 54 noiseless single coil. This is equipment tone snobs will turn their noses up to in dismissal.
It just so happens that Danny Roffe is a beast on guitar, which helps

Thanks Todd. Im trying my best Im considering adding a couple of tone city overdrive pedals in with the pod to see how it sounds. It has a few compressors in the pod - Tube Comp Red Comp Blue Comp Vetta Comp Boost Comp might be one more, cant remember offhand.

Hi Bleeze, Hi GMC
Greg is a greatest guitarist, its tone is beautiful but I think acoustic out of his apartment made things. I can listen to music for hours
Posted by: Todd Simpson Jun 16 2015, 08:23 PM
I had a Line 6 amp head (VETTA) that had a line 6 processor built in to it which was handy The guys in Meshuggah used this same head on tour for a couple of years. It had the same exact set of compressors. I liked the boost comp and tube comp but they all did the job Here is a quick tone test I did with the VETTA using some high/low gain bits.
It did a sort of DIME tone pretty well It did cleans very well. Just couldn't make it Djent.

that was some beefy toneage! It really did clean up nice, that was a very cool sounding clean you had. The last one was like Rick Wakeman on steroids
Posted by: Todd Simpson Jun 17 2015, 08:12 PM
The clean tones were my fave thing about VETTA I did like that you could do two amp sims at once and have each do something different. It did a great job on Dimebag type tones but I couldn't get it to tighten up without using a actual stomp box overdrive for boost and then pulling back the gain on the amp sim. I"ve owned the Vetta and the Pod XT so I've been able to get somewhat familiar with their internal options. If I remember correctly, the vetta had a graphic eq with sliders though which is a bit different and the XT used the older EDIT software which was a bit different than the HD edit.
Both of mine were previous gen units and the HD series is the generation after. Now they are on to yet another generation of algorithms with the HELIX. I did notice that many of the bits from the Vetta/XT seem to be still part of the HD in terms of what they are called, like the list of compressors. I wonder if it will stay the same on the helix?

Hey Todd, I was just watching your new soldano clone videos WOW! you are getting some monstrous tones out of that.
are you playing it through and actual Randall 4x12 here? it sounds immense!
Posted by: Todd Simpson Jun 22 2015, 02:50 AM
Thanks! Yup, it's just the preamp going through a power amp and into the Randall 4x12. It's an ancient cab with the original Jaguar speakers in it (the ones DIME used waaay back when). I did another vid with it in the FX LOOP of my 11 rack. Turned off the amp section in the 11 and just used the cam sim. I was pretty shocked how well it worked.

LOL! probably not He is a little bit good
I would also give a shout out to Steve Rothery. He's clearly went to the school of Gilmour but that's no bad thing Im not a massive fan of 'post fish' Marillion but I do like Mr Rothery's playing and tone.

Plenty of players with great tone. One that I always liked was Shawn Lane's:

Shawn Lane had killer tone Most of it really was in his hands. He had a cool way of using fx too. He was a fellow Southerner and Georiga native It was very sad to watch him slowly eat/drink himself to death though

Didn't he suffer from some sort of disease or something that he got medicine for that caused his weight to increase? Can't remember exactly now.
