The EBU and the Music Producers Guild have just announced a new agreed standard for embedding ISRCs in to digital wav files. This should ensure that ISRCs will in future be embedded in to all commerical CD releases. It will help ensure that artists receive appropriate performance and IP rights payments and also that credits are properly databased.
As professional mastering engineer we embed ISRCs where they are available and it's even one of the first questions I ask clients, 'What are your ISRCs'. Many project studios and mixing engineers however do not. http://www.mpg.org.uk/news_stories/398 -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer. One thing to add...
The MPG seem to think it's a case of using a daw that can produce accurate PQ. That's a major part of the solution but in my experieince you also need to use a CD burner that can write the metadata properly. Not all burners can and very, very few will let you verify that the ISRCs on the PQ printout is indeed that on the CD. -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer. ... What should we do to get ISRCs? A record label can get an ISRC from the ISRC agency for the country where the label is based. If there is no country specific agency then the code is supplied by the international agency. For Argentina Gab the agency is: CAPIF, Lavalle 534, piso 4, C1047AAL Buenos Aires, Argentina Tel: +54 11 4326 6464; Fax: +54 11 4326 7830 Point of contact: Carolina Euler Email: [email protected] Some agencies currently charge for this (eg USA) and some don't (eg UK). The ISRC is an alphanumeric code that identifies the country and registrant plus additional code that indentifies the year of release and designation. For the majority of countries the code is 12 alphanumerics long. The agency will provide the first part of the code (Country and registrant) and the label adds the last part (year and designation) -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer.
