Howdy mate! This is your personal thread and we will use it for the stuff we decided upon in your development smile.gif

- technique: Alternate picking, Legato, Bending, Vibrato
- theory: understanding the basics
- applying the techniques and theoretical notions into contexts - learning and recording GMC lessons as perfectly as possible which combine these aspects

For starting out - how much time can you dedicate to playing each day?

Alright smile.gif Well, what do you say if we start out with a few lessons based on what we have discussed earlier and we'll take it from there and see how it works?

Legato and picking combined: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/legato_and_picking_intermediate/

Please take a look over this lesson and tell me if you understand the theoretical base behind it smile.gif It is an interesting way of looking at the shapes of the modes in the G major scale. Btw, I don't know what your current theoretical level is, so if this feels new to you, I will come up with a quick video to explain everything smile.gif It's fun and easy wink.gif

What say you mate?

Hi Cosmin still working on piece and its coming along fine the legato stretch on the A string from c,d and e is hard but coming along great. Correct me if Im wrong the first shape is a Em chord and the primary notes are the 1st flat 3rd and 5th of the eminor scale which make up a minor chord then as far as the major its 1 3rd and 5th. of the major chords so for the C its C,E, and G which make up the major. Is that right? Thank you

That is perfectly true mate smile.gif This lesson outlines the shapes of the modes derived from the G major scale - each shape outlines a mode, starting with E Aeolian or natural minor as you have very cleverly observed smile.gif

Hey just off topic watched a bunch of your youtube videos and man you are amazing. I have one question for you if you have time to answer? Why do you do alternate tuning as opposed to regular and just one more question is it easier to play? I dont think it is but very curious.

Hey man, I am using alternate tunings for various reasons:

- I like lower registers in open strings
- My band plays in those tunings
- My voice settles very nicely in Drop C and Drop A smile.gif

I found it as an advantage, because my fretboard knowledge must stay fresh all the time - I mainly have to see the notes in three different tunings - Standard, Drop C/ standard D, Drop A/ Standard B laugh.gif

I am currently saving for another PRS which is meant to stay in standard tuning, for GMC use and other more conventional contexts.

That's the thing biggrin.gif

Hi Cosmin here is the video. I will say it could of turned out better and is better when I play it without recording myself, makes me nervous, is that normal?? I am getting better and that piece was harder than I originally thought but did it ever improve my pulloffs. Sorry if It is disappointing no backing track on there a bit computer stupid with these things. Thank you again. BTW can you explain your thing you said to be a killer guitarist you just need to focus on one thing?

Hey mate, thought it would be easier to answer in a video smile.gif Yes you may call me Tom or Thomas. First I would like to say Thank you again for the video response that was great and the actual time to care. I think I have the same metronome you do a Korg. Wow what a difference using the metronome already feels more in time. Timing has always been a weakness of mine, I'm a black belt in martial arts and my timing has always been great there so I know I have the ability. Nice video by the way on the Katana, used to have a beautiful sword myself. One last thing a question. I have a lot of music in my heart and it sounds super cool just wish I could express it, honestly more than playing fast I love that music you have in your video that groove sound its killer. Will that music come out of me when my technique gets better? I think it will but.. Thank you

Tomislav

Hey Tom! Hehe, I bow to you man and thank you for your kind thoughts! I am a white belt (6 kyu) in Ken and Batto Jutsu. What sort of sword did you have and what happened to it?

I will make up a video for you in order to be able to freely express myself on the questions you asked wink.gif Coming up this evening!

Aaaand here it is:

Once again I thank you for the quick response, I am a very humble man no need to bow biggrin.gif I believe my sword was a Iaito non sharpened blade. My parents gave it away when I went to college. Always Loved Kendo and particularly Iaido, watched a demonstration by a old instructor and the speed and accuracy of pulling the sword out of the scabbard and striking and putting it back, absolutely amazing, where I believe what you do is multiple strikes. I always found training in martial arts is alot like guitar playing. Every time I think I'm good at guitar playing I get humbled then think I suck, then I remember my instructor saying do it for yourself. Sorry for the long rant will have a video for you in proper timing very soon. Your a good man Cosmin, thank you

Looking forward to see your recording mate!

Looking forward to see your recording mate! Hi Cosmin sorry for the late video, 2 weeks of teaching self defense classes and working at the bar plus being a single Dad 4 days of the week, haha, no more excuses. I didn't mean to rush this video but another busy week for me coming up doing 1 hr a day practice currently which bugs me alot. The metronome is set at 100bpm and wow does it ever help. Let me know what you think and I feel I got the grasp although I noticed I would play faster at points then would slow down to metronome.

You have made great progress! Your timing is almost perfect and it's obvious that you have grasped the way in which to follow a click. Now, next level smile.gif

It happens that I know how to play this lesson myself and you are not respecting the breaks between the phrases. I will make a little movie for you in which I will talk a bit about these, k?

Awesome Cosmin, and yes some Sensei are very strict about recording videos in the classroom, when I teach myself it can be a bother for me as well. If you stick to your training you will love it, such a great release for frustration and anger and more that that you learn alot of self control and I leave feeling very at Peace and confident, seriously though alot like guitar you never stop learning haha. Bought a song of itunes from you guys, Meta, great tune let me know what other songs of yours I should get biggrin.gif its great music and my way of paying you back for the grreat support you have given me,

Can you record using the webcam for now, if you want to send something? I read your topic in the Practice room as well, but I don't know what could be wrong - Darius' suggestion regarding re-installing the camera drivers, sounds as the best option so far.

Sorry Cosmin was really hoping that using soundcloud would work for the moment, I listened to the first time I did the take and how out of time it was compared to now. I cannot believe how much better it is, using the metronome has helped so tremendously, now I can hear when the chord changes happen and change with them on time. You have seriously improved my guitar playing its awesome. I will figure this camera thing out hopefully within a day. Thank you again, Guitar Sensei. biggrin.gif

You have no clue how happy I am when I read the things you are telling me biggrin.gif Thanks for making my day a great one! Ah, BTW, this weekend I will be attending a very special seminar with this guy - he is friends with my sensei and they will be presenting a historically based sword seminar, comparing a few techniques throughout various periods in the Japanese history.

Haha! Yes it does work! Good going mate! I am very proud biggrin.gif

Listen, everything sounds great, but please take care when playing the descending parts - your alternate picking is not consistent. With that, I mean that you're not only going down up down up all the time - you are changing the direction of the picking and that's not the best choice smile.gif

I'll show you in a movie, but tell me, would you be up to trying a new lesson, raising the difficulty level a little bit? biggrin.gif

There we go:Hi Cosmin, first off thank you for making my day biggrin.gif . Like I said when I saw the first take of that piece I did compared to the last piece I sent, I feel like I'm such a better guitar player and really that would of not happened without your guidance. Secondly the metronome wow does that help and need to understand that more and watching myself play on video is great helps so much. If you think Im ready to step it up and do another lesson then yes lets do it I'm very excited to learn something new and will keep practicing that other piece to work on the alternate picking. Good luck on your sword seminar, I was blown away by his speed and how calm he looked doing it please let me know how that goes. Last but not least your song Meta is killer, went and bought the seeds Ep because I actually like it and at the same time get to support you guys. Take care Cosmin and am looking forward to learning more

What would you say about this one?

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/rocking-tune-beginner/

It has a different approach to it, because of the less technical approach but the presence of many articulation elements - bends and vibrato!

I will tell you all about the seminar - it's starting today at 7 PM and I can't wait!

Awesome Pic Cosmin. Seminars are great I remember doing a few with some UFC fighters and one of my best friends is a 2 time K1 Kickboxing North American Grand prix champion( Michael the black sniper McDonald) and just him showing me things is inspiring, honestly like when you show me something on guitar biggrin.gif The camera is a Samsung 14.2 MP with 18x zoom records in 1080 P and has built in wi fi so I can instantly upload to Youtube, getting it on Friday.

Hi Cosmin sorry its been awhile since I posted a video, been very busy but have been practicing lots. I actually have new callouses on my fingers, damn, bending and vibrato I don't think I have ever worked that hard but completely understand how important how great it sounds to have a good vibrato. So I have 2 questions for you? 1. The hardest part of that song to me is section 5, the rock licks as he calls them, getting those grace notes on time has taken some work but almost have it down. 2. Where can I order the Days of confusion Tshirts ?? Hopefully they ship to Canada biggrin.gif Will have a video on Sunday. Take care Guitar sensei.

Hey there Tom!

I am glad to hear that you are practicing hard, my friend! Well, regarding that section - those look like some microbends to me smile.gif I will of course, come up with a video so that you may see what's going on, up close wink.gif

About the T-shirts, please write an email with your order at [email protected] and our PR will take it from there.

Cheers and thank you!!

Hi Cosmin Thank you first off for the T-shirts looking forward to getting them, order has been placed through Paypal biggrin.gif So here is the video, my feeling is I should have waited not because I couldn't do it but because my fingers seriously are so sore and blistered from all the bending so the final cut is not a true representation but was eager to know what you think http://youtu.be/ZdAi6a7Fsls

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 30 2013, 09:31 AM

Hey Tom!

Your timing is ok and the tone is very good as well! But almost all the bends are under the pitch and the vibrato is too small. I will ask you to wait for a few days until your fingers are ok and then record another take focusing on the bends and vibrato. As you said, you kind of hurried things wink.gif Thanks again for supporting my band, mate!

Thank you again Cosmin and thank you for the honesty, Like I said I knew I should have waited till fingers got better, I swear I have never had blisters from bends on my fingers like now. I knew the timing was a bit off as well I could hear it when I was playing final take. Always a pleasure for me to support your guys Band in anyway I can and plus your guys music is awesome biggrin.gif Once again Thank you and honestly your help has really turned my guitar playing around.

These honest words coming from people that I can change things for, are fueling my determination man! Glad to know I can help!

Wait a few days (1-2 maybe even 3) then practice it - focusing on the bends and vibrato - and then record it.

You will have this under your thumb mate!

Here is the video Cosmin, its frustrating I've played it so many times but still make mistakes when I feel I shouldn't. Sorry forgot to edit video before I published it. On a really good note I have really improved ( I feel) my vibrato I know it needs work and my bending. I hear my friends play and it drives me crazy when they don't add the vibrato adds so much. Let me know what you think.

Hey man!! This is MUCH better - I mean, hell, I can see your wrist at work!!

Now, it's just a matter of tuning your ear to the correct perfect and expressively executed pitch biggrin.gif I would like to get you out of this one a bit and push you towards anther bending and vibrato focused lesson - keep practicing this one as well ok? But for the sake of variety and not getting caught up in one piece for too long, I'd like you to try this one too:

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/bending-control/ it's more pentatonic and it involves more diverse bends biggrin.gif

What say you?

Hey Cosmin just about done the piece but.. I have one question about the piece and its throwing me off. The second bar of the 4th section of the piece, the A note on the B string followed by the micro bend the G note on the B string I cant seem to get that right almost sounds like he is doing a pinch harmonic. I feel like I am doing it wrong. Thank you Cosmin

Hello Tom!

I say, there is a big, big progress happening man! Congrats! You still had a few, just a few which were a bit under the pitch, but generally, my suggestion is to work on making things sound more natural, because, at this point, you are technically correct in 90% of the situations but there is a big lack of flow - so this would be the next step.

Now, I have 2 ideas:

1) You push this one a bit further on its own
2) You push this one and start learning a second one, in order to keep the diversity present.

What'll it be, sir? biggrin.gif

See? It got embedded here wink.gif You solved the problem, so let's continue our journey?

This lesson is basically a very raw bending based one, I want you to focus on the attitude and bends - it will help you build a lot of confidence in your playing, as it is simple and yet it pushes your interpretative skills further!

Hey Cosmin, so here is the video. Had to change up a couple of things and improvise a little bit. The Guitar Pro6 file was different from the actual song there were a couple parts that weren't in the tab. It was a lot of fun and really helped me with the bending and Vibrato it was great smile.gif

Hello Tom!

I can notice great improvements in your playing and I am glad that these lessons are helping out smile.gif

Now, in order to make things even better:

- please focus on bending and vibrating using your wrist - you have some spots where you are still using your fingers, instead of the wrist (ex: 0:54) but there are other spots where I can see the technique looking great!
- with time, you will grow more and more confident with your skills and the recordings will sound better and better. At this point you are a bit shaky smile.gif But that's how it goes with articulation - it took me about 1-2 years to get in shape with it back in 2004-2005 when I understood that I need to work on things in order NOT to sound like a robot biggrin.gif

Now, would you like to add a new one to the collection? tongue.gif

Thanks for your kind thoughts again, Tom! Well, as I said, this is a lengthier process, because it's something that the body learns in time and it takes a bit more time than other techniques, simply because it's not something that's purely mechanical. Be patient and it will be there wink.gif

Now for a new experience, how about this one?

You need to focus on touch here, more than ever smile.gif It is a fine piece and it will require your attention and finesse!

Awesome Cosmin smile.gif Love this piece, one thing I noticed he really uses the wrist in the vibratos smile.gif Will work really hard on this. I read your thing on the rec take and its funny I actually do play over the song I'm working on and match it note for note I know a part of it is still a bit nervous when being recorded (will get over that soon) and technique needs work. I do plan on doing rec takes as much as I can, love the feedback even if I don't do that well. Thank you for all your help, cant wait to start this lesson, one more question! How much of my time should I devote to a piece, I average about 2 hours a day practice?

Hey also notice he is using a circular motion on the vibrato and bends!! Would love to also understand how to use the metronome on a piece like this, When I practice for speed it seems simple but for some reason when there are lots of rests I get lost, seems silly I know but any pointers would be great. smile.gif

Hey Tom!

Sounds good man - your vibrato has improved A LOT!

Now, I understood where the problematic lick is - as I said, you need to isolate it and break it down, play it at a very slow tempo and phrase it exactly as Piotr does. Slowly raise the tempo until you can play it at the desired speed and most of all HAVE PATIENCE biggrin.gif ok?

Can't wait to see the recording with the backing track!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Sep 12 2013, 09:18 AM

Hey Tom!

It looks like you are progressing continuously man! biggrin.gif Congrats!

What I noticed - you tend to keep your thumb in the air - it should grab the upper part of the neck and thus help you with your bending and vibrato, which right now have an equal amount of wrist and finger action - we should eliminate the finger action wink.gif

I will make a little video for you regarding the thumb position and there's that lick which is still not ready - but, my thoughts would be that you should keep playing this one focusing on what I suggested and in the mean time we could also begin a drop tuning lesson - deal?

I was thinking about this one: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Metal-Metrics-4/

It takes some time especially if your guitar was never going through such changes - what strings do you use for drop C?

And here's the vid regarding the thumb position:

Hey Cosmin thank you for the video smile.gif Always thought I used my thumb but realised I need to use it more when I watch the video of me playing. For the drop C tuning it took 4 or 5 times before strings settled down and is staying in drop C. I'm using .009 strings but Hybrid version where the low E, A and D are heavier, the low E is .046 A ,036 and D 0,26. and the last 3 regular size. Bought them by accident but like how the low strings are heavier.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Sep 13 2013, 08:06 AM

Oh, oh - Tom, for drop C, you would need at least 10-52 strings. 09-46 is far too slack.. I'm afraid you'll encounter some control problems - don't you feel the strings too flabby?

Posted by: Hajduk Sep 13 2013, 09:17 AM

Hi Cosmin here is a rough take of Metal metrics. For some reason I couldn't get the sound right and the stupidest part of it all is I forgot to put heavier strings on sad.gif there are clearly a few areas I really need to work on, actually sounds really bad because of the strings, my apologies in advance.

Actually reallllllllllyy sorry I put this take on sad.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Oct 17 2013, 06:07 PM

Hey mate, I watched the video and I think that you need to work on the timing and phrasing as well - please try to play the piece over the original recording in order to observe the differences smile.gif When can you post a new one? No worries about posting, it's very good that you did it and it's always good to post takes as often as possible - in that way, I can monitor your progress and help out as much as possible.

Focus on the bends and the little licks linking the big phrases, ok?

Hello Tom! Happy New Year and happy b-day biggrin.gif

Well now! I think you did a very good job here smile.gif The first one still needs a bit of attention as there are a few notes that are not that clear yet, so I would spend a bit more time on it focusing on getting all the notes to sound as even as possible wink.gif The second one is pretty tight, so I would suggest that you can take a look at this one as well if you want to take that legato playing up the hill wink.gif

Alright Tom wink.gif

Post a video in which you play the part - but do it slowly and rhythmically - I will answer back with a video after I see what's cooking there smile.gif Also, looking forward to see your take on Ben's lesson so we can move on to the next one. I hope to help you cover the entire series biggrin.gif

Hey Cosmin here is my first take of Ivans tune, will work on and fine tune the pitch of bends and timing.

The bends up on the high notes were hard to do smile.gif

Hehe wink.gif A quick reminder man biggrin.gif Please do stick to the idea and make it a part of your playing, as it'll help tremendously.

Hi Cosmin here is a first take with Bens land of Legato, will have 2 more vids up tomorrow and re do this one, Thank you smile.gif

Didn't realize till after camera angle was off. Sorry. Re posting tomorrow

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Feb 6 2014, 08:44 AM

Howdy there! smile.gif No biggie - I can use this one as well and focus more on my ears biggrin.gif I can sometimes, more often than not, figure out what's what just by listening wink.gif

Ahaa - spotted smile.gif Keep that thumb behind the neck mate smile.gif Legato is ALL about getting an opposite force exerted against the direction of the force applied by the fingers. Thumb on one side, the other fingers on the other side.

Please focus on timing, getting EACH note to sound at the same level with all of them and separating them clearly. Also, each note has to have the same duration - all 16 notes right?

wink.gif Keep working hard mate!

Posted by: Hajduk Feb 6 2014, 09:30 AM

Thanks Cosmin, I heard it as soon as I recorded it where I was off time, so I am making it a practice to record every piece from now on to video so I can listen to where the timing is wrong.

Good choice here mate - let's see this one recorded with the stated method, deal? smile.gif

Posted by: Hajduk Feb 7 2014, 01:05 AM

Hi Cosmin didn't get around to doing the Bens land of legato but I did re-do the Classic ballad bending from Ivan, kinda butchered parts of it but wanted to show that my thumb is going over the neck when bending.

Posted by: Hajduk Feb 7 2014, 09:44 AM

Hey Cosmin have a quick question for you! Is it normal to find that doing legato with the thumb behind the neck harder?? I find I don't have as much strength doing it that way is this normal??

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Feb 7 2014, 12:24 PM

Hey mate smile.gif

Let's take things one at a time:

1) The recording - please work on things so that you can use the technique with ease and make things sound fluid, while reaching the correct pitches - it's just a matter of focusing on these important elements mentioned.

2) Regarding the legato smile.gif Well, your hand got used to a certain position, but if you will try larger finger stretches with that grip, you will hurt yourself most likely.

It's nothing but physics mate - the more you lower your wrist and place your thumb behind the neck, the more reach you will have and the right tension applied by the thumb in order to increase the strength of the fingers against the neck. Two opposing forces providing support for one another:

Let me know if you understand the concept mate smile.gif

Posted by: Hajduk Feb 7 2014, 07:16 PM

Totally understand the concept as a matter of fact when I studied classical guitar they would murder you if the thumb wasn't behind the neck during the appropriate times. As far as the recording goes I should have waited and not rushed it to just get a video out to you. As always thank you for the help smile.gif and awesome news on endorsing PRS as a matter of fact was going to ask you if the PRS SE Torro is a good guitar, thinking of trading in the EVH guitar for one.

Hey mate - good call with the classical wink.gif Don't rush into recording if you feel like something ain't in place - record a little sample, send it and we can discuss it. In that way, you won't waste time recording, just to do it again smile.gif

The Torrero... I haven't tried that one, to be honest, but I will try to get my hands on it smile.gif It should be something of a Custom 24 with floyd rose...wait now I know why I stood away from it - the floyd rose laugh.gif

Posted by: Hajduk Feb 8 2014, 10:28 AM

HaHa smile.gif Yeah its got a Floyd rose which I always want then realize I never really use the thing!!!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Feb 8 2014, 02:26 PM

For me, it became the most hindering thing - tough cleaning and calibration issues all the time and if God forbid, a string breaks during the gig - you are done for! What other model do you fancy? smile.gif

Posted by: Hajduk Mar 18 2014, 08:53 AM

Hi Cosmin, sorry I didnt see last post. I like the PRS Toreo, I think that's how its spelled. Here are a couple takes I promised, Thank you

I know there are mistakes but have worked really hard to have correct hand and wrist position on this

Here is the bending one, which I still think I suck on but am working on the bending with the thumb over my the neck

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Mar 18 2014, 11:52 AM

Hello Tom!

Glad to see you are working hard mate!

The legato lesson is still having missing notes here and there, so please try to focus on playing every note with the same intensity and in good timing at a slower tempo.

The bending ballad, has some issues due to the fact that you are not fully using your wrist smile.gif Try to become conscious of the pivot created by the thumb and push the wrist while hanging the hand on the neck with the aid of the thumb - that's why it's staying there, so please, by all means, do take advantage wink.gif Also, intention is a bit weak behind the bends - play it like you mean it man! biggrin.gif

If you focus on these aspects, you will have a much lighter time with these lessons wink.gif

Posted by: Hajduk Aug 6 2014, 05:21 AM

Hi Cosmin, so here goes, the take is not great and want to re post and once again sorry for the long break and am getting back on track

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Aug 7 2014, 05:55 PM

Hey there mate!

Well, well, great to see you've got this one up on the hill smile.gif I practiced it myself and I know it's not as easy as one might think wink.gif

As I see it, you need to focus on 2 very important aspects:

- nailing the first notes in each phrase when you are shifting - usually each first note is choked, due to the fact that you are not fretting it clearly when shifting
- unwanted noises - around 0:39, there's an unwanted noise for instance which is the result of loose strings

These should be your focal points for this lesson, so I would suggest you to record on the 50% speed backing track, focusing on keeping the above mentioned aspects under control wink.gif

Do we have a deal, Sir? biggrin.gif

Hi Cosmin here are 2 videos I'm putting up, I did the legato piece at 55 BPM and then the classic ballad bend piece smile.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Aug 13 2014, 08:34 AM

Hey mate! Thank you for the recordings!

Now, to take things step by step - in the legato one, you have slight timing and dynamic problems - see 0:46 for instance, where the notes aren't even and they tend to fade out a bit.

At this tempo, please focus on playing all the notes as even 16th notes and also, make sure that you play them all at the same intensity.

About the ballad - the main issue as I see it, are the bends and vibrato - please notice that you need to use the wrist and the thumb anchoring as we have been discussing, in order for the hand to have strength and execute the articulation techniques properly.

Also, because of the lack of strength, you don't quite reach the pitches with as much intention as you should.

I think it would be a good idea to record a take over the original recording, in order to notice the pitch differences, so that we may be able to easily fix these issues - what do you think?

Posted by: Hajduk Aug 13 2014, 08:44 AM

Thanks Cosmin smile.gif Done! Will have it for you next week.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Aug 14 2014, 11:31 AM

Most excellent wink.gif

Looking forward to see and hear the improvements and if there are any questions along the way, please do go ahead and ask, ok?

Posted by: Hajduk Oct 15 2014, 10:43 PM

Hey Cosmin, I played both the classic ballad bending technique and Bens land of legato with the actual track to compare my sound.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Oct 16 2014, 08:28 AM

Hey mate,

Thank you for the recordings! There's progress here, for which I must congratulate you and in order to make things sound even better, here are my observations:

Legato lesson - you are in good timing in general, but whenever you switch positions you land a little delayed on the first note in each shape. It's a timing thing that requires more slow practice and anticipation of the shifting. Time and focused practice are the ones who will solve this, so just give it time and it'll be there. Don't forget to work on it at a slower pace so that you can become really conscious about the position shifts.

The bending lesson - technically, it is ok as an ensemble, but it sounds rigid at this point and you need to work on expression - make the playing sound natural and smooth as the original is. The next steps here would be:

0:15 - fix the first bend, as it is under pitch
0:33 - that phrase could be executed in better timing
- work on making the take sound as natural as possible - have a relaxed feel and try to get as close as possible to the interpretation in the original - check out the different volumes at which certain notes are being played, for instance. This is what we call dynamics! smile.gif

Please let me know what your thoughts are, deal?

Posted by: Hajduk Oct 16 2014, 09:53 AM

Thanks Cosmin will get to work on it right away smile.gif

Here are the vids Cosmin smile.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jan 13 2015, 09:29 AM

Hey Tom!

I watched the vids and here are my thoughts:

The ballad - your bending seems technically correct, but you are not always reaching the notes towards which you are bending spot on and the overall feeling of the piece is a bit rigid.

What I would suggest at this stage, because you know the piece already as an ensemble, would be to play it against the original recording and try to match the exact nuances in the instructor's playing. The close you get to those, the better it will become!

The legato lesson - the phrases on their own sound rhtyhmic and consistent, but there's a slight delay appearing when you shift the positions, which can be felt especially when you pick that first note. Please focus on your hand synch - pick exactly on the beat and also be careful to hit that first note with your left hand on the beat. Slowing this one down in order to nail this aspect, would be what I suggest here.

Let's go back at the drawing board and take care of these details, deal?

Posted by: Hajduk Jan 15 2015, 09:48 AM

Sounds great Cosmin, I don't know why these 2 particular pieces are giving me so much trouble, but will continue to work on it smile.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jan 16 2015, 09:15 AM

Please do continue and please make sure to implement the details and suggestions I spoke about - at a slow tempo at first, so that you can be in control and then speeding it up in order to reach the original speed.

It may not be a bad idea to try and record against the original lessons in order to be able to compare takes once you feel sure about the implementation of the details we spoke about wink.gif
