GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Derper's Back?!

Hey all.... I hate to admit this, but I've been "away" from GMC for a bit. I have still been checking in, checking the forums, and using GMC as a tool for many resources. But, I haven't been as ACTIVE as I was in the past. BUT, never fear!! I've still been practicing a TON, so I'm still making amazing forward progress.

While having some fun at work, I came up with this cool little bebop style riff in the key of Bm. I slow it down quite a bit, and make some comments and such....but NO TAB for this one!!(?) Yep. That's the challenge. I'm a huge fan of learning by ear, not that there is anything wrong with tab...but if you "transcribe" from an album (for me, I don't usually write it down) you learn so much more than simply grabbing a tab book! But if anyone needs help, ask and whip up some tab and PM you. Enjoy!

Thanks Coz! Since I've been playing, technically speaking (although not playing HARD!), for over 20 yrs now with virtually ZERO theory background, the ears have grown strong. But now, I'm starting to learn some theory to bridge the gaps. That way, I know WHY something sounds the way it does, and also then I know the intervals to make that sound....instead of having to memorize the "spots" to play in.

Also, with a bit of theory, I can communicate better with other musicians. I have come to realize that I will NEVER play from the head, but more from the ears and hearts..... but I still must strive to learn theory, intervals, modes, and tons of chord shapes for two reasons:

-To be able to communicate my musical ideas to others
-To also expand my currently narrow minded view of the fretboard, so that I can increase my "vocabulary" and have more ammo to create music from my heart. Kind of the "Scofield approach"

Good thinking man! Music is just like any other foreign language and it can be learned and used in the same manner

Your approach will provide good results for certain and from what I know you, you can already play great stuff! Good luck to you on your journey and make sure to drop a line whenever you might need my help
