For the picking another thing that helps alot is giving the pick some freedom to wiggle between your fingers, I've noticed that this facilitates the small movements... which in turn will give you more speed. Watch out you don't lose your pick though wink.gif

Yep, giving the pick some freedom helps me to relax my hand and to feel what I play a lot more.

I've been trying the 'keep your fingers close and movements small' technique for a while, and when I first started, it was a tough job.
What I did was set the metronome to 60 bpm and played quarter notes while paying very close attention to my fingers. Thing I noticed was, that when your fingers are used to 'fly' you'll have a hard time controlling them, even at such a low tempo, but only practicing like this can help getting the control over your fingers back.
I this kinda thing for about 2 weeks, 1-2 hours a day. I might not be a shred god now, but my speedplaying has definately improved!

Interesting.. is that 1-2 hours of intense practice "flying-fingers" only? i dont think i can do 2 hours straight with nothing else than this.. guess i have to spread it across 6 months.. hahaha.. laugh.gif

When you lose your focus, take a break or play something diffrent, then return to the FF-training ;)

Its really true... playing things REALLY slow makes Your finger memory remember where the fingers shall be when then playing it fast.. (think we discussed this in another thread a while ago...) Jazz player John Abercrombie used to play be-bop tunes in 30 bpm in order to get the phrasing right.... But 2 hours/day will kill my appetite for music also... and I will probably wake up in the middle of the night playing the same phrases in my sleep. laugh.gif

And another thing I'd like to mention, which is extremely helpful, is to relax your hands! Don't force yourself to make smaller movements, loosen your arms and it will come much easier!

Top, top books and lots of truths to be found in there.

It's all about economy of motion, without going into economy picking, which would be even more so.
