Sorry for the delay DeepRoots - only just noticed this thread.
For midi input I actually use one of my guitars. It's fitted with a special hexaphonic pickup (a Roland GK2A_ and the signal from that is sent to a midi interface (Roland GI20). The GI20 then produces a midi signal that I can send to a synth/sequencer etc. I think Muris might be looking in to an Axxom (?) system that uses the same principles but has better tracking. My Roland is a bit long in the tooth - Roland updated the pickup about 2 years ago to the GKA3. You can use the GKA pickup with the axiom converter or a Roland Guitar Synth (or I believe their VG systems). A set up like mine - or Muris's would be about 3-500 Euros for the pickup, special lead and midi converter. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If however you want to go with a keyboard there are several things to think about. First do you only want to send basic midi note on/off messages or do you also want to send more complicated data (ie tha allow you to control the adsr for instance on a soft synth)? In the first case you just need a very basic midi keyboard. In the second you need a midi keyboard that includes rotary encoders and/or sliders that can be configured to send midi (or maybe even a synth). The good news is that neither are expensive - you can get a basic midi keyboard for about 40UK sterling - one with rotary encoders/knobs/sliders will start at about 70UK. Next thing to think about is do you want a dumb keyboard (no sounds) or one with its own? Again the latter is more expensive (Novation make/made a rather nice called - if I remember rightly an A station and Korg do a nice version of their old MS20 nowadays). Next bit - do you need the keyboard with or without an inbuilt ASIO soundcard. Without is a lot cheaper (ie a Novation without is about 150UK, same keyboard with is about 220UK). Next is the size and feel of the keyboard - they come in sizes from 25 keys up to a full size (as in piano) 88 keyboard. You can get them from plinky rubbish action through synth action to full piano hammer action with after touch and release. I kind of recall that M-Audio make an 88 note keyboard with midi controllers for about 300UK that is supposed to have a nice keyboard. So the choice is yours really - anything from 40UK or so upto a full all singing and all dancing synth for maybe 1500UK (BTW I've mentioned Novation and M-Audio - they make great midi keyboards IMHO and move do make 25 note controllers). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IF after all that you don't want a keyboard or a guitar hex pickup there are also midi drum pads that do the same as the above but you load samples/notes across the drum pad and activating them by hitting the mini pads. This can be a great way of programming any really rythmic stuff as opposed to musical notes. Have a look at InstruMental Case's link to Felipe Carvalo (post no 9) which shows an MPD in action. Midi drum stuff here starts from about 100UK (ie an Akai MPD16) and can go upto 1000 (though there you are really getting a pro quality beat box). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hope that all helps. If you can pop into a good music shop and talk with the guys in the recording/tech department who should be able to show you and let you try out stuff.
