Guitar Master Competition!

It's time for a new competition again, finally smile.gif
This time we're going to have some fun and you, the gmc members, will be able to win some fabulous prizes.

Enucleation had a good idea a while ago for a competition.
So I "stole" his idea tongue.gif

You should make your own recording, much like the Guitar Idol competition, and show us your skills.
Record your own song, with full backing and post it in the uploads thread.
Video is not necessary, but will certainly look better smile.gif
I choose not to have video as a criteria to join, as more members will be able to participate that way.

The recordings must be original compositions, NO covers!

Let's start with the best part of the competition, the prizes:

1st prize: VOX TONELAB ST (Multieffect)

2nd prize: BOSS DS-1

3rd prize: ELECTRO HARMONIX LPB-1

How about those prizes? biggrin.gif

In the 4 weeks the competition lasts you'll have to make/record a full song with backing.
Drums, Bass, Rhythm Guitar, Solo Guitar and other instruments if you feel the backing needs it smile.gif
No video necessary, but a cool touch if you choose to make one smile.gif
This competition will be decided by an open poll, so all GMC members can vote.
So the better the quality of the recording, playing and composition, the better are your chances!

Voting will consist of three choices:

We will start a thread for people who want to enter - you should post your recordings there!
If some of you make videos as well, post these on youtube and embed the video in the upload thread!
If you don't have a Youtube account... ... ...create one wink.gif

Rules:

1. The recording MUST be an original composition!
2. All contestants must have a recording/video uploaded within the length of the competition.
3. Recordings should be as long as the song. If it's shorter it will sound unfinished tongue.gif
4. Final winners will be chosen by an open GMC poll.
5. All entries must be finished by July 27th, voting will be for one week after that date.
6. No Cash or alternative prizes will be offered!
7. In the event of a tie, a tiebreaker activity will be employed to break the deadlock.

Posted by: maharzan Jun 18 2009, 04:08 AM

Does this have to be a full song? I mean 3-5 mins ? Can it be a short clip such as a min or two? Doing all that recording/arranging and composing sounds a bit challenging. smile.gif

Well...
Anything is possible. Just keep in mind that the members who will be voting for the winner,
will look for songwriting skills as well, not just how well you play.
And how good the final upload sounds, mix etc. smile.gif

A good example of a song between 1 - 2 minutes is; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Go1wV4Ikd_I

But it'll have to be very good if it's gonna get the same attention as longer,
and more "song-structured" compositions in my opinion smile.gif

But that's the beauty of this competition, you can do it the way you want!
Just do it well!

Well, it's a competition for the members of GMC basically, and not the instructors.
This competition will also help them in trying to develop their songwriting skills.

About the rules for this competition, you need to talk to me smile.gif

I've been meaning to ask Kristofer about a competition for the instructors as well,
as that would be great for you, the instructors, to have some competition-fun as well and maybe win some prizes smile.gif
You deserve it, no doubt about that.

How about it Kris? I've got a few ideas as well smile.gif

And glad you like the competition!!

Yeah, good idea by Enucleation as well.
I had to modify it a bit though, but I think it turned out great smile.gif

Posted by: mhskeide Jun 18 2009, 09:43 AM

Wooow, great idea for competition (and über prizes though I don`t like the DS-1 tongue.gif )

Too bad I lack equipment.... the only thing I have to record anything BUT guitar is fruity loops...

Will the quality of the backing have much to say? For instance backings made by EZ drummer vs. backings made by FL?

Well, as one of the voting options will be "best recording/mix",
the sound and quality of the backing will have an impact on the outcome.
But the most important thing should be the song/composition.

Keep in mind the quality too though, as it can decide the winner if it's close smile.gif

Or....? unsure.gif biggrin.gif

Guitar was played totally live through my Fender, no effects except a BOSS DD-20 in the second part of the solo.
All programming & vocals, text & music by me.

You have to put it in the uploads thread.
I'll have it up in a few hours smile.gif

You should post a audiofile as well, if it's possible.
So people can listen to the song in standard quality, as youtube compress the sound.

Video is just an option in this competition, and as long as your audiofile upload sounds good it should just help.

Of course, EZdrummer is a good purchase, but you still need other VSTs. Everything is explained in that tutorial.

im not the creator for this competition,

but im sure in this contest quality of composition, creativity, and technique come before quality of backing track and recording because not all of us have a big enough pocket book to invest in expensive VSTs,

what i will do to help those out, is look for a bunch of free VSTs that i think sound the best, and post them here or in another thread to help some people out. (if that is allowed) im very excited to see what ideas the members here at gmc have in terms of their own compositions!

if you guys have any questions about making backing tracks let me know, ill help as much as i can, and of course, instructors also have a lot of experience in this as well wink.gif

oh and thanks tolek for linking my guide wink.gif

Waaaaah wicked prices wink.gif But I have a question. If your not able to make your own BT's does that mean you're not able to participate? And also, the open voting will let someone win with killer technique that probably already won 200 prices, would it be fair to leave one price for judges? So they can decide who did best, according to his own level? Otherwise... I won't win, and that's not good laugh.gif

  • Best recording/mix

Hey, audiopaal. Just one question, since it I did not find anywhere else in the thread.

This is only about instrumental songs or vocals are allowed? I am asking that because vocals make alll the difference in the world. Even this being a guitarist website, I bet that a song with good vocals would get more votes on the songwriting part...

So is it just instrumental as in guitar idol? I think that would be the most fair for this competition.

Hmmm... Have to disagree there mate! Not everyone on this site has a fantastic technique but some may have good songwriting skills and vocals, if the comp was purely instrumental all the focus would be on technique, which is mostly what GI is about I guess but this way its all about the composition of the whole, not just the guitar. smile.gif

Posted by: Karl-ss Jun 20 2009, 01:26 PM

I would join in... But im afraid my bassist skills dont reach to the level of others... But you might see one of my songs.

that it was very guitar (and technique) oriented, like guitar idol.

But it's fine to have a competition based on songwriting overall.

Oh and regarding that voting - its three choices as that there will be three winners, each for each cathegory, or these are just criterias to choose the best one?

Posted by: Patrik Jezierski Jun 21 2009, 02:14 PM

This sounds like a nice competition smile.gif and really good prices aswell.
To bad I broke my index finger this weekend sad.gif hope it heals before the deadline unsure.gif

Posted by: Andrew Cockburn Jun 21 2009, 02:59 PM

@Kaznie

There are plenty of free programs out there that can help you make a backing track - maybe this is a reason to look at some of them? You have a month - that's three weeks of tinkering then 1 week to write and record the song wink.gif

Check out the recording forum and take a look at Reaper - that is free to try out, and with a few free VSTs you could get far!

Even so, the unplugged idea is absolutely killer - and this competition is NOT just about technique - its about the whole package. A solefull vocal over an acoustic guitar could be much more compelling than 10,000mph shredding - although the shredding could be cool too if done in support of the overall song!

Use reapers midi editor.

You should join in! Make a simple bass line using VST's, place roots of the chords on every bass drum beat and you already got a main groove going on! smile.gif

Well we can't really control everything. If someone will cheat, he is the loser, and it will be his problem for the rest of his life, not ours wink.gif

Posted by: Koopid Jun 24 2009, 08:46 AM

Do I have to sign up or is it enough to just upload if I find the time to finish a song?

I want to participate but since I have to learn a few things about programming drums along the way (and learing how to use my new DAW) I might not be able to finish in time.

Posted by: Deleted Jun 24 2009, 11:23 AM

Is it important to create the best riff or be the best guitar player to have chance to make a good song?

I want to say, if it's like a guitar idol competition beginners and some intermediates can't join the contest smile.gif

One can your Songwriting/Composition vote, and another can get your Technique/Playing vote etc. smile.gif

Don't give us ideas!!! ohmy.gif

i would enter this copetition, however, the money I would spend on a backing track would be unneccesary (the drum player would be much better than the guitarist... dry.gif ) so I'm working on a song anyway, have a riff and stuff, but for the solo I figure out about a note of it a day. fifty note solo=I'll get done in mid august.
