GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Metallica Style Collab
Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 24 2016, 06:54 PM
Hello everybody!
Welcome to my new GMC collaboration. This one is based on the style of Metallica and once again our founder Kristofer Dahl is already working on lyrics and vocals for this one!!
As we want to make this song a cool as possible we would like to invite everybody to join and record your solos, guitar arrangements and ideas over the track to use it for the final mix.
The song has 5 sections: Intro (00:00 to 00:18), Verse (00:18 to 00:34), pre-chorus (00:34 to 00:43), chorus (00:43 to 01:00) & bridge/riff (01:00 to end). All parts are in E minor except the pre-chorus in which the song modulates to F#m. This pre-chorus is a bit complex because it also includes the b5 note, so adding it to the Pentatonic minor scale can be a good idea. Beginners can skip this part.
The most obvious scale choice is E pentatonic minor or E blues scale everywhere except over the pre-chorus where you should switch to F#m pentatonic.

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

Finally, you can also use minor scales (E minor over most of the parts and F# minor over the pre-chorus)

IMPORTANT INFO About files required:
In order to make the things easier for compiling takes and mixing I need that each participant shares 3 files:
- Audio file with the mix of the backing and your guitar. - Audio file only with your guitar (If possible this audio should have the same length than the mix version) - Video of you playing the solo, and if it's not possible a picture. (Mp4 format if it's possible)
The best way to share this is compressing in a zip file to be downloaded from here or using sharing service as dropbox, wetransfer, and copying the link here.
If you decide to share your files using soundcloud please remember to "allow downloads".
Thanks!

Kris is already working on lyrics. Let's wait for his input.

Hey Kris and Gabriel,
I am just brainstorming here, but could we possibly do two verses (one with me and one with Kris)? Of course if other people want to sing too we could work on that too, and make it even more of a song than just a one-verse thing?

Sounds cool to me - you should defintiely record your lines they way you want them.
I am working on vocals over the entire backing. Since it's pretty short (compared ot a "normal" song) one option is definitely to go for an extnded structure. Ultimately it will be up to Gab to mix n match when he has our ideas.
It's really cool these collabs make you want to start experimenting with your voice that's the whole idea!

Do you have preview of the lyrics so far? Should I write my "own" verse? I'm just thinking we should maybe work in on a similar style of lyrics, so that you don't sing about death and destruction and I sing about butterflies and flowers.

haha no that would be a bit too original perhaps
My lyrics are pretty raw so far and might not make much sense. Hopefully they will, with the recorded vocals.
I am not yet sure how I will be singing - ie if I will attempt rock style singing or more on the barky side (as with the previous collab). Right now I am just practicing clean singing over the backing to establish the melody/lyrics, and practice timing and pitch.
Draft lyrics:
4, 3, 2, 1 You hear me count the days left to the new world order, hear me count x2
you hear me fu***g c**t?
When you groove so nicely I feel surpressed cause you’re bouncing on my chest
When you speak so freely I loose my mind cause I’m fed up with your kind
With a thousand lies build a temple of stone Dig for fame, spread your name, but the blame is…
…on you x3 the blame is on you
4,3 hear me count the days left to the new world order 2,1 hear me count the days left to the new world order

Cool! I like it! It's aggressive as the backing deserves it. I think that giving this one the structure of a full song is a great idea! So feel free to write and record for two or three verses and then I'll give this one the best structure.

I've been a bit stressed lately, besides working on my own songs, so maybe I won't be able to contribute much. I'm also not fully able to relate to Kris' lyrics and how they will fit the Metallica style, but I'm sure he knows Metallica better than I do, so maybe he's better for just singing by himself

Hey Ben - I was hoping to have presented my ideas much earlier, but life and man flu got it the way. I will be recording this week though - fingers crossed!

I have recorded most of the vocals, and just started mixing/editing - here is a mini teaser so you can get a feel for what I had in mind:
hahaha this is so awesome!!! I think that this will be the best GMC track we've done! It sounds like a metal HIT!!
Your vocals here are VERY personal and made this "in the style of Metallica" song sound very personal. The pre-chorus is just perfect, where I imagined some very low (hetfield/anselmo style) backing vocals that I can record by myself. Very subtle but I need them!
In the first heard I loved everything except the "on you" section, but after some more hears I started to like it and understood that the silence there make the overall song more balanced.
Finally, I really liked that you've used the same intro melodies and lyrics over the final riff, now I think that it will work as the chorus, isn't it?

Agreed - the vocals in that part should just be used as backing choir. I think we should have a guitar melody or something there!

GREAT backing and a killer idea for a collab Here are my bits for the project.
Here is a preview vid.
With and Without backing .aif files on dropbox. Clearly labled per file. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4xk3pqdbx5d5q5f/AABwpzavnpyBm5RK_B8l9oBYa?dl=0
I"m using my HOTONE WAH on the solo but replaced it with the 11 Rack wah in the patch. I've also swapped my FCP1010 midi foot controller for this PEAK midi controller. It's smaller, has metal switches, not plastic, easy to read display, solid as a rock. If you have a Behringer FCB1010 I'd say ditch it asap and swap to this setup. This wah pedal can act as a controller for the 11 rack or it can act like a volume pedal or a traditional wah. Super handy and super portable.

I jammed over this backing for a bit earlier today and although I am not really a Metallica fan, I liked the backing track. However I think parts of the backing were hard to play in timing so I decided not to record anything.

Hi Alex! I'd like to hear a take from you to give some feedback about how to be able to play in timing over this backing. It can be really helpful for your playing. You can share your take here, at the mentoring program or even via PM.
Remember that the main purpose of this collabs that GMC students learn by making music.
Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Jun 21 2016, 09:10 AM
Here is my jam over the track... I just couldn't stop playing
Hi Laurent, I like your ideas on this one VERY much. If you still have some extra time I would adjust your tone which has too much treble/presence, and if possible practice a bit more the take to make it sound flawless. It's a very cool composition and could be much better with this two fixes.
Some specific parts to review:
First licks: Vibrato could be more consistent , and the 00:07 trill could be cleaner. 00:10 - What about ending the lick on another note from the chord sounding in the backing? 00:15 to 00:20 - Adjust timing.
About vibrato, I think that you could go for a slower and wider vibrato on this one. It would sound less "nervous".
I can use this take for the collab, but in the case you have more time, you have some guidelines on how to improve it.
Thanks for joining!!

Damn that was good. I mean, freakin A. that bit at 2:12 was particularly nice. Really the whole thing. !!!!Folks, please do not let this throw you off and think that your take won't work. Every take is a good take people, it forces you to play and move ahead as a musician. Kris has been doing this for quite some time so it's a great example of the power of PRACTICE. Submit your own examples pretty please The more takes the better!! !!

Very well put - for every recording you share you will progress. It does not matter how you feel after having uploaded/recorded - I always feel horrible when I upload something, I almost always think something in the lines of "why do I even bother, it sounded even worse than my last upload". Still I have learned that if I keep doing it, it will take me forward one way or another.
Posted by: Todd Simpson Jun 22 2016, 01:36 AM
Well said Yet again! Everyone doubts themselves, it's normal. Just try not to let that keep you guys from trying and sharing. IT takes boldness to be sure. But it's a great way to see your own progress, and get valuable feedback. So even if you hate your take, submit it!!! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!
Todd

Excellent Alex - perhaps you feel already that you are looking at your take with different eyes, because you have shared it? Again - this is the process that moves us forward. There is no way around it - to others reading, you won't get better just by practicing on your room - you have to start SHARING as well
You did very well sharing this track - this will be a really cool collab
Posted by: HiimAlex Jun 22 2016, 02:58 PM
Yes exactly, it is always good to have someone else look at your playing and give feedback to you since it is hard to criticize yourself I also realized even if I get some negative feedback, it wouldn't matter I will practice so I don't make same mistakes next time
Looking forward to the final mix!
Posted by: Todd Simpson Jun 22 2016, 05:56 PM
Super Congrats on a spiff take and on having the stones to share Just turning the camera on can often cause one's fingers to turn to mush, crowds watching can do the same. Just like guitar, you gotta practice. Practice at playing in front of a camera, practice at playing in front of people. As Kris wisely states, it's all part of the process

Bingo! Never be afraid of feedback, positive or negative, it can contribute to your progess as a musician. It's all about the "journey" as they say, and it's a long road. But it's well worth the trip
