Getting Serious

However, I never really liked shred music so whenever I play a solo, it's mostly been blues oriented around the pentatonic scale. I am self-tought so I probably have a lot of flaws in my playing but heres the deal. I want to get serious, because after trying to learn Marcus' 3-level neoclassical solo I only got the intermediate 90% tight, and that very lesson was what motivated me to get serious. I want to be able to do stuff like that in the advanced part. How would you guys recommend getting serious with speed-picking and all that? I think the world of shred is too big, because either it's not motivating to use a metronome or there are just a lot of lessons which are too hard. I have been working hard everyday on this since he made it!! The fun thing about this is, you can keep in time useing the backing track. If you are new to speed picking, which I belive you are from what you have mentioned. I would advise against this just for now. Useing a metronome to keep yourself in time is an absolute must when your new. It teaches good practice for the future. I have found after 9 months of useing a metronome, i can now get away with keeping time from the backing track instead!! You just know instintivly if you are in time with the beat. You can try and make metronome practice fun by upping a few bpm every now and again and keeping a goal - challenege yourself. Another lesson I have been working hard on which is great fun, is Muris's "Thirds" exercise. I am sure you could intigrate these runs into a solo of your own! I would recommened against cromatics for now, and work on alternate picking over scales and possible some basic sweep arpeggios to start off with. I have done quite a few various alternate picking and sweep picking lessons from the instructors and i now fuse the techniques together when improvising. That's good and solid base for future upgrade but I must say something to you. Don't EVER look at the watch or count the time of practicing. Just practice and results must be there. Of course use the metronome,that'll help you to avoid being sloply at picking. You asked what to practice...practice everything.
