Well to learn speedpicking and all of that fast stuff you pretty much have to use a metronome.

I know. I merely wanted some advice on how to start.
I tried playing chromatically from the low E string to the high e and back again, but it really doesn't do it for me. |

It seems like it doesnt work because you have to do it over time, using a metronome wont make you go from playing very slowly to very fast in just a few days, it takes months do develope it, you have to be devoted to practicing it if you want to increase your speed.
Use this lesson. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/how-to-use-a-metronome.htm |

I do know HOW to play with a metronome, I just can't decide WHAT to practice with it? Scales, chromatics, arpeggios?

Okay, I could probably have said myself that scales were "unavoidable".
Thanks for the help all, I'll get right to it! |

First of all I think you should like shred just a little bit more,
if you wanna play speed stuff with alternate picking You see, 2-3 years is how long you've been playing. That's good and solid base for future upgrade but I must say something to you. Don't EVER look at the watch or count the time of practicing. Just practice and results must be there. Of course use the metronome, that'll help you to avoid being sloply at picking. You asked what to practice...practice everything. And don't leave your current bluesy mood behind, too much shred is gonna kill your soul. -------------------- Youtube
