I came across her today, had not heard of her. I find a number of British artists from the 80's and 90's that I had not heard, of, little air play because not appreciated by brain dead America mainstream America. She is probably known by the British, played with some bands that look pretty good, that I had also not heard of.

She had a lot of great songs, not usually country, but this one is. I like this performance, she is singing to the most unresponsive German audience imaginable. They are corpses. But she still is full of energy and enthusiasm. They clap at the end though, I did not know that dead people could clap. She really had a great voice, I have found a lot of great songs by her today.

She died in 2000 tragically, and heroically, saving the life of her child.

While I am, here is one of my favorite country songs by one of my favorite all time country singers, Patty Loveless.

Oh aye, Kirsty MacColl is well known. I'd say most famous for the duet with the Pogues on Fairy Tale in New York

Kirsty was well known in the UK like Artemus said. She had a string of hit records and the duet with The Pogues. She also did a nice version of Billy Bragg's 'New England'.

Her dad was Ewan MacColl a famous folk singer in the UK who also wrote Peggy Seeger's hit 'The first time that I saw your face'.

Her family disputed the 'accidental death' verdict btw. I don't remember all the details but what I recall they claim that the person in charge of the speed boat that hit her was drunk at the time but that that was covered up in the inquest as he had high ranking political family connections.

There was a pretty good tv documentary on the making of 'Fairytale' and another tv bio-doc on Kirsty.

According to Wikipedia she pushed her kid out of the way, and took the full blow herself. I should listen to College radio as a friend of mine says, some of the really good bands primarily only get played on College Radio, and when they tour here, primarily are well received in College towns such as the one I live in. I had not known about the Pogues. But I saw that Christmas song duet today, and that was pretty cool, good band.

I see you are from Manchester. Sure seems that a lot of good bands have come from there, with really devoted fans.

I can't say I recognize her, being a swede, but the song has a familiar ring to it but as far as I can remember my dad had a tape with a swedish cover of it.

I belive the format with a dead audience was how it was supposed to be back then, this must have been somewhere around 70's-80's. At least swedish television was quite pathetic in regards of delivering a show.
The audience was either zombie like or told by producers to stand in one place and slowly rock back and forth. I remember these shows, they were very staged to the extent you could see through it that the audience never acted spontanious.
It was also back in the days when the interviewers didn't bother to read up on the band and could interview foreign artists on studdering english, reading questions from a piece of paper.

This is a successful interview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugfa8wa8VkI

Short memory, have to translate inbetween questions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srLC1G8VgMk&NR=1

This is a piece of work. Mind the swedish parts where he says "Venice" instead of "Vienna", the record is called Vienna.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cw014ck7izQ
And mind that Venice is a city on Italy, has nothing to do with Vienna, while the interviewer states "Venice" is swedish for "Vienna".... he also at one part translate Venice into Swe:"Venedig" so he seem to know it's NOT Vienna after all unsure.gif he's so lost... laugh.gif

And there was another youtube clip where the interviewer presents Phis Collins as a solo artist, thinking Genesis parted. Phis says, "oh, so they sacked me because five weeks ago when I left England I was still in the band" laugh.gif

That's swedish music television for you in the early 80's

Well I've found a new source of entertainment. In the first one she should have kicked the guy in the testicles. He was pretty rude to her. The other two were well mannered guys. The Adam Ant guy seemed to have a head on his shoulders.

I can't draw conclusions just from this, but it appeared that Swedish is a difficult language to express yourself in an economy of words. Although I think it is a very nice sounding languages, it is a very pretty sounding language. I like northern European languages. I even like the sound of Deutsch. Although I would not call it pretty sounding in the sense the Swedish is. But it is very expressive I think, and I like the hard consonants.
