Ainsley is good, no doubt, (got tickets to see him and buddy whittington in Liverpool, hell yeah!) but comparing him to the master is a bit unfair! Such a cool vid that Jesse! On the TS issue: its a hard one that mate, the TS is really quite mild compared to some overdrives and distortions but it kicks serious ass, i have a ds-1 as well and its not even in the same league, no way! Yes! I can't speak for all brands and models but one with both a Level and Gain would be useful. What it'll do when there's no tubes to push is that it will simulate the sound of a pushed tube amp.
