This video is a song called "Thermal Bad" by New Mastersounds, that my band Planet Jackers covers occasionally. We had finished our set, and this was un-expected encore performance. This song, my solo, the groove, the whole thing really....is a great example of "my style" and my "strong points" as a player. My solo starts about 2:50, but get a feel of the song and groove before skipping straight there please.
Occasionally, though I love GMC, I start to feel "alone" as one of the only non-metal players here. Maybe this video explains it. I'm a funky man, stranded in a not-very-funky world (Portland Oregon....land of rain, and indie hipster music). Very nice jam man I like it! I myself have strayed away the harder metal kind of stuff and enjoy playing funky grooves too so you are definately not alone man.
Rock on! Rich... |

Great video and playing style man. Your band sounds really good. My favorite guitar players that incorporate funk influences into their style are Dave Navarro, Nuno Bettencourt and John Frusciante.

I'm a funky man, stranded in a not-very-funky world (Portland Oregon....land of rain, and indie hipster music). Awesome job man! You have a great vibe going on in that video! I understand where you are coming from on that feeling of being alone here at times. I love it here as well but I'm not much of a metal player, my interests musically tend to go toward the Blues first and foremost and then Jazz second. So what I tend to do it take the lessons which have a more metal basis and adapt them to my interests. For example, sweep picking is a technique that you do not often see in Blues music but occurs frequently in these epic metal solos. So I look for ways to incorportate sweep picking to my blues playing. Same thing for tapping. I also understand about feeling out of place where you live, since I'm a Blues guy who lives in an area where country and bluegrass are all there is! -------------------- My Sound Cloud Profile: http://soundcloud.com/casinostrat

Thanks for all of the feedback everyone!!
I like the idea of the funky collabs....but I really have no idea/programs to back a killer original funky backing. BUT, there are a TON of great funky backing tracks available here at GMC already!! Like this one from Stephane's "John Scofield Style Lesson" Is there a way Bogdan can "split" this thread somehow, or merge it together with another thread such as "Student Funk Collab"? That way, it's not buried here as a hidden gem in my "this is ME" thread.

Ok....before this thread, and the idea of a "student funk collab series" dies, I wanted to "bump" it with a submission of my own.
With my wedding 2 weeks away, an EMULATOR gig this weekend, and moving day this friday...I haven't much time to practice outside of my EMULATOR rehearsal time. BUT, I took a bit of time at work to just "jam out" and improv over this backing. I will cut an actual "collab take" later on my interface, but here's what I threw down at work. I just ran the camera and about 3 takes in, I got something usable. On that take, I feel like my biggest issues is that I don't stop and change position to re-start my phrasing. It gets old and stale where I'm at. The next take, I seem to attempt to improve that. Also, I need to focus more on landing on chord tones at the right moment, to give the "solo" a more melodic and coherent feel, instead of just "fumbling around" on notes that "work" but are difficult for a listener to sing back. On both takes, my timing could improve. I tend to fall behind, trying to keep up with my ideas. I blame it on my early obsession with Jimmy Page. Great player, but his hands can't keep up with his mind. -------------------- Check out my awesome Nintendo Cover-band, EMULATOR!! http://www.reverbnation.com/emulator Now.....go practice!! |

Hey Derper just to let you know I'm playin around with this backing track, and if I come up with anything good I'll submit it for this collab. Funk isn't exactly my style, but who knows?
It will be an audio take, since I don't have a camera at the moment. -------------------- My Sound Cloud Profile: http://soundcloud.com/casinostrat

Awesome!!
Yeah, let's do "audio collab" instead of video. This video isn't my "take", and I will submit an audio take soon. High Derper and All ! Her a noter try before i go to france , http://soundcloud.com/dieterleguitar/funky-2 Enjoy France! And thanks Dieter, I dig your interesting takes on this backing. Very textural, and innovative. Sounds great!!! I love your band! Thanks Alex! I've always been a sucker for instrumental funk music, fused with other styles as well. -------------------- Check out my awesome Nintendo Cover-band, EMULATOR!! http://www.reverbnation.com/emulator Now.....go practice!! |
