GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Give Us Your Johnny B Goode!
Posted by: intemperateControl Jan 22 2010, 07:11 PM
Okay, guys! Since there is no lesson here on the GMC for Johnny B Goode, I want to hear your own version of Johnny B. Goode - any way you like to play it, with or without any backtrack. Since I can't sing, I am just going to upload my version of the intro. and two solos - mid. and outro. After trying several variations of playing this tune myself, this is my best one so far. The first solo after my intro. was influenced by a rendition of Johnny B Goode from a famous movie. Can you guess which one? Anyways, I don't have the tools to do a collaboration or I would, but this is just for fun - I would really like to hear some cool versions from you students and instructors alike. ARE YOU UP TO THE CHALLENGE!!! And the winners will receive....... a personal sense of accomplishment along with smilies from appreciative listeners.

WoW! The "Chuck Berry Style Lesson." It does start out a-lot like Johnny B Goode as well. I searched the lessons here on GMC for "Johnny B Goode" and couldn't find one. Hope this isn't a bad post - I will brace for impact!!! For the horrifying impact of deletion!!! Otherwise, I would still like to hear some cool new versions.

Here I have the guitarpro file of the original J B good by Mr Chuck Berry for you. Due to copyrights I have to remove the GP file guys -- Sorry--
Cheers
please remove the gp file Tony- on behalf of the moderators

The fact is that I usually play in these months a cover of that tune. The funny thing is that on the first rehearsal with the band I was doing something wrong because I mixed the licks of my lesson with the original one... what a disaster

We could not record covers at that time here on GMC. This is the reason for "In the style of..." lessons.

Guys - from the posting guidelines:
15. No Copyrighted Tabs. Please don't post tabs of copyrighted songs - for more information, lookhttp://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=16855
So you cannot post a tab gp file etc as the song is copyrighted (Playaxeman - you need to remove your file btw).
The competition may be possible however if you put up videos on Youtube or similar nd not directly on GMC - I'll check with Kris. Please wait for his ok though.

Pending final approval from Kris, as stated by tonymiro (we will wait for Kris to post his approval or disapproval here), I am upping the stakes of this contest myself. To the winner will be awarded a new VOX Wah Pedal! Well, almost new - I tried it out 4-5 times myself and it works great. Consider it a demo model. I bought it at a far and away Guitar center. Erie in its location, it appeared to me the midst of a distand fog that seemed magically to appear out of nowhere, where the clerk said to me, "This is the exact model used by Jimmi Hendrix himself!" He had an all familar face, but one that I couldn't quite place. "And he who shall acquire this magical pedal will obtain the skills that make legends!!!" I never could find that particular location again, it seemed to vanish with the night as I departed. It still gives me chills. So then, Why am I giving it away for a contest? Because, my fellow musicians, it was not meant for me, but for some one... some one else. I am only the messenger, and now the time has come.
The complete contents of this award include :
1. 1 V847-A Vox Wah pedal. List Price $175.00 (includes a handsome carrying case). 2. 1 Spot 12V adaptor (wall plugin) List Price $39.95 Can also use a 9V battery (not included). 3. 1 Extra guitar cable 15-20FT long. About $14.00
I paid about $139.00 for the whole package (not a bad deal). Please see the contest rules proposal and photos below. Note: the products shown in the photos below are the exact products the winner of this contest will receive. The cable is not shown in the photos but will be included with shipment to the winner. Keep in mind, this is a very special cable as well.......
My Propsal:
Submissions from instructors and students is welcome. I'm looking for 6 instructors and 4 more students to help judge this contest, with myself included. This means with 11 judges the contest is less likely to result in a draw/tie. Only one prize can be awarded to one winner. One video submission per candidate only. The first 6 instructors and 4 students (or student/instructors) who state their willingness to be a judge in this this contest, only after Kris posts his approval (and not before) will become judges. I will announce who all the judges will be on a future post, all dependent on the timely response of every willing participant. Note: only one post per applicant to be a judge will be accepted (the first post made). Judges can participate but not vote for their own submissions.
Judges will rate submissions based on the originality & skill of the player while with all maintaning that Chuck berry feel to a relative degree - with or without a backing track. Guitar intro./solos should not be an attempt to create an exact copy the original Johnny B Goode. Those who submit singing with their submissions will be given an extra 1 or 2 points based on how well he/she sings the song. If singing is included, the person playing lead guitar in the video must also be the singer. Judges will add these points accordingly. Those who submit guitar playing only (shortened versions or not) will be judged by a points ratio of 1-10. 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest score one can achieve based on guitar playing skill alone. (eg. intemperateControl score: singing 1; Guitar 5). No partial or half points (eg. 7.5) will be admissable. Finally, any backing tracks (self made or not) should not be a consideration for additional points, although this can lend appeal to the overall sound.
In the unlikely event there is a tie, the candidates will go into a final death shredding match that will last no less than a 0.60 seconds, and no longer than 1:30. Either way, the candidate with the most overall points will win the contest.
The contest will start the same day Kris posts his approval. I personally can not win and, therefore, no votes for my submission should be cast, since I am the sponsor. The contest will last for 25 days after Kris posts his approval. But, in the event that Kris posts disapproval, I can only assume this thread should be deleted sometime soon thereafter. Guess that's about it - this concludes my proposal.

Yeah, this is a cool one !!! I've been playing it for years long time ago, but I'm still unsure of the words in the second verse, I mixed up "gunning sack" and "railroad track" all the time, it just made my tongue go crazy!!!
EDIT: Btw. what I really miss here at GMC is not a lesson on the song, rather a lesson on the duckwalk! (some of You may have seen my failed attempts....)

Oh well, not really. Last time I did it was in the garden in my shorts with the neighbours watching, I've expected the ambulance to come and bring me to the nearest mental-institution any minute but nothing ever happened. Wonder why???

Oh Kris! Oh Kristopher Dahl! Come out come out wherever you are! I would write to you myself, but since tonymiro said he would check with you personally, I didn't want to impose, seeing the chain of command here seems to have somewhat of a structure, and tonymiro is in fact part of your moderation team. Live or Die, man? What's it gonna be?
Ps. BTW, It was great to hear you guys interest here - I am looking forward to hearing the ultimate Johny B Good collaboration...

Thanks Pedja - that means something coming from a seasoned pro like you. I also like the idea, and with Kris' permission (still waiting) I hope this competition can get underway soon. I know the whole proposal was my idea, but maybe the GMC team would rather take over this competition - it might be better that way and if so I wouldn't mind stepping down. Either way it would still be a-lot of fun.

Well, well well. No answer. I must only assume the worst. Therefore, I shall cancel my offer for the prize regarding this contest 5 days from the day this post appears unless I hear otherwise from the wonderful staff here at GMC. Oh well. Meanwhile, I have been working on another tune for a new contest! "Give Us your Eruption!" Yes, from your hero and mine, Eddie Van Halen!!! Let's hear it for the man, dudes!!! Ha! Mine's a bit sloppy, but.. Are You Up to the Challenge?!!! Mua-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!!

Don't be too hasty Intemperate...
After discussion you have the go ahead for your competition. There is however a condition:
as already mentioned because of copyright we can't host any version/take of the song on GMC. So please all entries need to post to Youtube and provide a link to the relevant take. Also please do't post any tabs etc.
Good luck everyone and thanks Intempreate for setting this up.

Excellent! Thanks Tony, to Kris and all the staff here at GMC.
As stated, the contest will begin the day we get the go ahead - that would be today, and continue for 25 days before the final judgment should render a winner. Submissions can begin any time between now and then. I am still looking for 6 instructors and 4 GMCrs/students to help me judge the contest as stated on page 1 of this thread. The first 4 GMCrs/students and 6 instructors who state their willingness to be a judge in this contest will be a judge. All GMCrs and instructors are welcome to participate in this contest. Just in case we have less than enough volunteers to help judge this contest, in the end participants will be judged by virtue of any judges who do elect to participate, starting with me. Good luck to every one.
LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!! Today's Date: February 2, 2010 Contest Ends: February 27, 2010
Ps. Tony, I assume by 'link' you do mean as a video or a text link to the relevant content being hosted on www.youtube.com, as applies to those who wish to present links from here to their own submissions on www.youtube.com. If I am not mistaken, otherwise please clarify.

As I am unable to submit an entry as I'm not equipped to do video at the moment I'm quite happy to offer my services as a Judge if everyone is happy for me to do so!!
Posted by: Fran Feb 2 2010, 04:47 PM
Excellent stuff! I'll have it covered later on the GMC Journal guys
Hmmm, thinking about it I believe you would reach a broader audience if you guys change the topic of the thread to Johnny B Goode Competition, and maybe move it all to the Competitions board, or at least announce it there, if you haven't already!
I'll have it announced on the journal too, probably tomorrow
Posted by: Boson Feb 2 2010, 07:59 PM
I am happy to be a judge. Look forward to listening to different takes. Every guitarist should have this in their repertoire.
Posted by: intemperateControl Feb 3 2010, 12:55 PM
To "Sensible Jones" and "Boson," great to have you aboard the judgment panel! Thanks for being among the first to join in. Your contribution, time and effort will be appreciated for what I think may be a rewarding experience.
And to everyone else, we still need 2 more GMCrs/ students and 6 instructors to complete the panel for the final judgment in this contest.
Fran, thanks for the advise. I am going to post a new thread to the Competitions board where people can actually make their submissions for this contest, and call it the "Johnny B Goode Competition." Your announcement on the journal, or anywhere else for that matter is much appreciated. Thanks for the insight - great idea!
NEW ANNOUNCEMENT : CONTESTANTS SUBMIT YOUR TAKE TO SUBMISSION THREAD 2 OF THE "JOHNNY B GOODE COMPETITION" VIA THE FOLLOWING LINK :
Any comments or questions prior to the contest ending, please post it here on thread 1 "Give Us Your Johnny B Goode." Thanks!
