Mostly reminds me of saturday morning cartoons. I like this in general. I don't know if I could listen to it for a long time but it's arranged well enough that it isn't causing me any distress. For most pieces of music I'd prefer a few outside notes rather than the whole song but when they're nicely arranged like this it's not bothersome at all.

Soundtrack to a film or to a cartoon smile.gif

I'm with Jafo on this! I couldn't listen to it constantly.
The thing I find with it is that so long as the note choices are more resonant than dissonant then it sounds OK. If it sounds too dissonant then it just sounds 'wrong' to my ear.

I can only listen to this if watching a movie. No way I would play it to myself on purpose smile.gif I think it's not an easy job to compose this stuff which in theory most of the time doesn't make sense but when you listen it makes perfect sense.

I wouldn't listen to this for more than this video. It fits well for a soundtrack to a movie or a cartoon, but not my cup of tea for anything but that. It doesn't sound bad, it just doesn't give me the feeling I want music to give me smile.gif

I really like this music, I've studied contemporary composition so if I didn't like it...hehehe

I've made a huge post months ago in my board about XX century music.

I really like from the Schoenberg's Op16 the third piece called Farben, although the entire opus is great.

Here's the post if anyone is interested

Cheers!

I've always loved this stuff. It reminds me of classic silent movie horror stuff a lot of the time and it seems to always evoke some kind of anxiety, its always a very tense music, I like it. But much like the others, Not a constant thing for me. Maybe a couple hours of listening to it per month.

I found this, for the most part, fairly harmonious. Huh?

In his "Jazz Theory Book" (which I found through this forum, thanks Pedja), Mark Levine sums up the evolution of Western Music as the creative incorporation of dissonance, and describes how the accepted palette of jazz steadily expanded in the last century. When I first heard Coltrane as a teenager, I found it irritating and unendurable for long. (Kind of the way Ornette Coleman's "The Art of the Improvisers" still sounds to me smile.gif ) Same for lots of other kinds of 20th century music. But I chipped away at listening to all sorts of things once in a while, and gradually most of it either started to make sense to me, or I lost much of my natural good sense smile.gif In any case, my personal musical evolution has been towards genuinely enjoying a much wider range of sonic expression.

Of the three parts in the Schoenberg video, I found the first least pleasing, due to the irregular rhythmic structure. I still find unpredictable rhythm to be much more discomfiting than this kind of harmonic dissonance.

It's hard to find another extra musical reference than horror, chaos and so forth,

I even heard there are some atonal music for children, I wonder what that is like,

I personally enjoy some of these pieces and I agree that it's a totally different listening experience. It's precisely that, an experience, not just background or cool music,

I'm personally not that into it,

Serialisum (spelling??) right?

I think it was a backlash to the romantic era, which is fair enough.

Kinda what grunge was to 80's rock.

I find it lacks a little soul and is music by numbers, kinda like 80's rock - lol!!!

I like this music. Maybe since I just loved all the cartoons I watched as a kid that often have similar sound tracks! smile.gif
But I wouldn't listen to it whole day - it makes me feel strange smile.gif

Sounds cool to me, it's definitely very similar to movie and cartoon soundtracks. I agree with Emir, this requires completely new skills for composing, since the music is constantly changing. Specially in a dynamic movie where the music needs to change quite a bit from scene to scene, but still maintain some logical sense. Very cool

Sounds cool. Makes a unique atmosphere in my mind. Can anybody explain what atonal exactly means? No more fixed Rootnotes or what is it about?
