Semi-harmonics are almost identical to pinch harmonics. The only real difference is you don't completely deaden the fundamental note. It requires you to just barely brush your thumb against the string after picking. I love adding them in for slight effect while playing, very slight twist of hand.

I think it's very hard to consciously provoke these harmonics instead of pinch harmonics but I think I know what you mean,

I learnt them when playing around with pinched (they are actually harmonics gone wrong lol) getting a fast flicking with slight side of the thumb (very light) I can get them most the time (you really need to change pick angles till you find it). Once you learnt it, try going back and forward between it and normal picking isn't as hard. However, keeping the position and motion it's sometimes possible to play an entire riff of notes with them and it sounds quite interesting (just as muck around). You can easily mess them up for an actual pinch harmonic if not careful.
You should heard the natural note still with a slight harmonic ring over top. Not sure if you can do them with other harmonic styles but it should be possible?
