I remember seeing this chord once.
I'm curious to know what is/sounds like I'm not so sure how the name can make sence, but do you have any Idea what it is? |

I remember seeing this chord once. I'm curious to know what is/sounds like I'm not so sure how the name can make sence, but do you have any Idea what it is? Hi Slammer, soo great to hear from you!! Actally,it's a min maj7 chord. Why? Cause it has base of a minor chord which is A C and E. Then we just add maj7 which is G# and there you go. It sounds...hmm...bit odd...jazzy...scary... HOLY...I missed sub-board!! Delete this post Andrew and pardon me. This post has been edited by muris: Aug 18 2007, 01:02 AM -------------------- Youtube

I remember seeing this chord once. I'm curious to know what is/sounds like I'm not so sure how the name can make sence, but do you have any Idea what it is? Judging by the naming its the chord also known as Aminor major 7. The minor refers to the A, so it is an A minor chord, with an added Major 7th, and would have the following notes: 1 b3 5 7 A C E G# They are fairly wierd sounding chords ... EDIT - Dammit Muris - beat me again, and on my own board too! This post has been edited by Andrew Cockburn: Aug 18 2007, 01:01 AM -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

Im suprised youve ever seen it spelt that way, as thats highly ambiguous! Like Andrew and Muris say it equates to a MinMaj7 which is reasonably common in jazz circles. Obviously spelling it that way contradicts the tonality of the chord- you cant have a major 3rd and a min 3rd in the same chord as the 3rd defines whether it IS major or minor- do you know where you saw it spelt that way? Sorry for hijacking, i got really intrigued-Hijack my threads if you like Andrew!! -Ben I actually think that "Amaj7 b3" makes more sense than A minor major 7 ... the key with "minor major 7" is to realize that the minor relates to the A, and the major relates to the 7th I remember this one from way back. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

The thing is, the way Amaj7b3 is spelt implies that both the major 3rd and the minor 3rd are present-the min 3rd as an extension. You could play it that way but it would clash terribly. AminMaj7 implies its simply an Aminor chord with a major 7th, which to me is much less confusing. ive never ever seen a chord called Amaj7b3, even in complex jazz charts. Technically you could argue they are not the same chord-the spelling of Amaj7b3 implies it has both the b3 and the major 3rd, whereas the AminMaj7 simply means a minor chord with a major 7th added. Confusing! -Ben Yeah, I see what you mean, makes sense - if it were written like that it should really be Amaj7b10 and it would be a different chord and sound absolutely awful! -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

Indeed Andy, and with a semitone clash between the b3 and maj3rd it would really be cringleful! Points to the person who makes it sound musical, without disregarding it as 'jazz'!! -Ben Let us call it 7/+9...thumbs up for blues and jazz. -------------------- Youtube
