GMC Forum _ Misc MTP _ January Mtp Thread - Mirkoschmidt

Hi Mirko!

How was your new year's?

Let's get started with January's program!

These are the three assignments for this month:

* First week: Due January 10th

- Post rhythm exercise no.1. We are still gonna drill the 2/4 time signature, this time is going to be a little more demanding. Make sure to include the accents as we saw on previous 2/4 exercises.

- Post riff assignment. This is the main riff for the song "Mr. Brownstone" by Guns and Roses. It's a great exercise and it's got some interesting mixture of techniques in it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVYDnQwi3OQ the riff appears at 3:17 as in the GP file.

- Post speed exercise no.1. Start from a comfortable speed. All alternate picking starting on a down stroke. This is a must-know type of pattern to develop speed. Go up to the fastest and cleanest speed possible and post it.

 week_1___Rhythm_exercise_no.1.gp5 ( 2.12K ) : 191

 week_1___Riff_assignment_No.1.gp5 ( 17.47K ) : 158

 week_1___Speed_assigment_No.1.gp5 ( 2.06K ) : 182

* Second week: Due January 17th

- Post rhythm exercise no.2. For this exercise start at 60bpm. And work your way up. The goal is 160, but post your fastest possible take at the time. Make sure to include the accents as we saw on previous 2/4 exercises.

- Post solo assignment no.1. We'll keep on working on the bendings. This time let's do the first solo for "November Rain" by Slash. Play the "guitar solo" part on the GP file attached. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-YRJMfgxts The solo part appears at 3:48.

- Post speed exercise no.2. This exercise has some different patterns in it and it's not square. Do it with alternate picking but don't be restricted to it if you need to use a couple of hammer-ons or pull-offs.

 week_2___Rhythm_exercise_no.2.gp5 ( 2.01K ) : 166

 week_2___Solo_assignment_no.1.gp5 ( 31.56K ) : 153

 week_2___Speed_assigment_no.2.gp5 ( 1.86K ) : 167

* Third week: Due January 24th

- Post Rhythm exercise no.3. Make sure to include the accents as we saw on previous 2/4 exercises.

- Post solo assignment no.2. This is a really fun excerpt from "Mr. Browstone" solo. Challenging but I think it will really help on your bending technique.

- Post speed exercise no.3. The idea here is to break the regular up and down patterns and start combining different runs "arbitrarily". A chromatic exercise. Start on a comfortable tempo and work your way up to the fastest and cleanest possible.

 week_3___Rhythm_exercise_no.3.gp5 ( 2.13K ) : 174

 week_3___Speed_assigment_no.3.gp5 ( 2.64K ) : 179

 week_3__Solo_assignment_No.2.gp5 ( 17.47K ) : 143

* Let me know of the REC lesson you want to submit for this month. The REC take would have to be posted on the 29th on january.

Let me know iif you have any comments and questions!

hey, nice assignments, its fun to practice that stuff! gnr is great every time, i never played that song before, really cool!

im waiting for the day you catch a song that i can play already! *g*

i would like to do the Vintage Rock Solo from Jonathan! i played that a little bit the last days already, it has some cool bends in it and it sounds really awesome! i love that tune! the only problem is the fast run in the end, thats impossible fast for me now, im not sure if i can play that in 3 weeks, maybe i have to create another end for my take a little bit slower stuff, but i really would like to practice that , so maybe im fast enough then!

I think you'll get it by the end of the month. It's a pentatonic run so make sure you hold your index finger strongly to it's position so you can move your others fingers freely. Sounds really cool.

hey daniel, im thinking about that coment from emir to my last lesson:

"When you vibrate while in the bend you should still vibrate from the wrist. You're moving your whole hand and the result is not really a good vibrato"

i have really problems doing vibrato while bending, and i dont know how to do that. i dont understand emirs coment, when i do vibrato from the wrist i have to moving my whole hand havent i? Maybe you can explain it for me or you can you can show me that in the next videochat!

second thing is the riff-assigment: the second part on the 4. til 7. fret is very fast! i tried to play that with 4 fingers, but then i recognized that it feels more comfortable to play it qwithout the pinky.
now im on 80% speed to the song and it doesnt feel very good anymore because i have to chance the frets very fast! what is the better way there? should i play it with 4 fingers or only 3?

On the riff assignment, use a pull-off technique, well, this is better to show than to explain, but anyway I don't the think 4 fingers are used here, only 3

about the vibrato, I think it is important to use the rist when doing vibrato and not only your fingers vertically if you know what I mean. Don't think it over too much. Take a look at the way Emir does it for instance on his lessons. He is moving the whole rist. It's kind of like pulling the strings on a downward fashion.

hey, im not sure if we talk about the same riff, because i have no idea to use pull of there, i have made a video to show you what i mean!

Thanks for that video!

I see what you mean now,

I would go with three fingers! You have two notes on the same fret on adjacent strings (7th fret) so you would use middle and ring for those two,

I don't my guitar right now because I left it for mainteinance, but I would bet it's played with four fingers,

Check 3:29 for the main riff: (This can also guide you for part you are asking for, because I think you'd use similar fingering)

Posted by: MirkoSchmidt Jan 11 2010, 01:28 PM

hey, im not sure what to do! maybe my english is to bad, i understand two differnt things in your response: i should play it with 3 fingers, but you would bet they had played it with 4...

hm, i should learn more english maybe! biggrin.gif

ok, i hope i understand it right that it better to play with 3 fingers!

I meant: I bet it would be played with three fingers biggrin.gif

sorry about that,

This type of riffs would be played with three fingers by Slash, probably someone like Paul Gilbert would play it with four, but I think that makes a little more complicated and unnecessary,

hey, i have done some videos today, but i dont really like them. i am ill since sunday evening, thats why i havent played that much, im at home tomorrow the whole day and so i think i can do much better videos tomorrow!

woooooooow, i have seen that i had to do the videos a few days ago, i was sure i have to post them today! upppps! im sorry, like i said, tomorrow ill do!

ahhhhhhh, i know where the problem is! i though due is a shortcut for duesday (yeah, now i know that it is called Tuesday) ohmy.gif

Hi Mirko! thanks for the videos! quality is fine, I can see and hear what you are doing,

On that exercise, YOU HAVE TO maintain alternate picking the whole time. Beware of that, because I saw you changing a little bit. Also maintain the same length in the notes as you started. At the beginning they are right, but then it went off.

Keep on playing it at that speed until you get it right from start to finish at least once, and then you can raise the tempo 10 bpms. Set a goal tempo and WORK TOWARDS IT!

nice pinch harmonic! smile.gif

how did you lower the speed of the track?

Nice work on that riff! I think if you play it at regular speed it will sound a little more natural.

I see that you finally did that repeated part with three fingers, it's good.

one thing again: Tune the guitar! take the two mins to get it in tune. biggrin.gif I know this seems basic but once you start recording your own stuff or play live you'll have that habit of not tuning it and that's gonna give you some trouble, so...do it.

Posted by: MirkoSchmidt Jan 13 2010, 11:23 PM

Hm, i have tuned the guitar 4 minutes before i make that video! that was the second take!!!!!!!!!!!!!! maybe i should buy a new tuner! laugh.gif

i did it with the windows media player, there is a funktion to to that... pretty easy way to do...

ctrl+shift+S ??? or another one?

Posted by: MirkoSchmidt Jan 14 2010, 08:47 PM

???????? never heared about that... there is a button to press... tomorrow i will do a vieo to show you the new speed assignment, im not sure if im playing it right, then i show you the funktion on my laptop, i think thats much easier then explain it in english!

is it possible, that my tuner tunes wrong? because i really tuned the guitar before the video and after you wrote that i tuned it again and there wasnt much to do, because the guitar was almost in tune and i have played a time after making the video.

or maybe it only sounds out of tune because i bend the strings sometimes a little bit without purpose...

That can be caused by old strings, or the octave intonation adjustment in your guitar. The only way to see if the octave intonation adjustment in your guitar is right is with new strings.

But that sort of stuff is better checked by someone with experience, imo. You could post something in the GMC forums about it, I'm sure there's lots of people who know about that problem in here. I've been there.

Great rhythm take!! it was perfect! accents well placed and all the notes perfectly put in the correct time.

You have a great sense of rhythm so there are no excuses when playing the guitar. tongue.gif

We'll continue doing more and more challenging exercises.

thanks, i think i should sell all my guitar stuff and buy a drum set! maybe i would be a great drummer! lol

my goal was 75% speed from your GP-file, that 104 bpm. i choose that small goal because of the short time and the difficult lick!
tomorrow is my birthday so i havnt that much time, i hope i can do one more video!

Thanks for the vid! That is good! The point of the exercise was met in my opinion, to break square patterns and use many finger positions. Practice the change that happens at 0:05 by itself. Notice that you have an open string ringing on that change.

Keep the notes even the whole time. You start off very well on time and later on you start to slow down a little. Keep the tempo as you on the rhythmic exercises!

But overall I think you can go far with this type of phrasing. It's a difficult lick.

hey, here is the first solo assignment, there is a big mistake in the end, but this is my best take and i havent more time to do one, because i have to practice the new studff and the vintage rock for rec!
the guitar sounds out of tune or not? i tuned the guitar right before the take (ok, this is take nr 10 or something like that), so it is in tune but it dont sounds so. in the slide part it sounds out of tune in my ear! what are you saying? if you think so to, i will post a video in the forum and ask what to do...

its really a dark video, but my light is broken...

hey, i had a look on the new solo assignment i i read there "pre-bend". i dont know what that means? where is the difference to a normal bend?

Posted by: Daniel Realpe Jan 20 2010, 09:49 PM

Pre-bend means that you don't attack the string until it has been bent and then you pull it down. It happens fast at that particular part but don't think about it too much, just listen and emulate it. Notes are there written down so you can see what's going on.

About this week's solo assignment, it's very good! nice control over the bendings! I think you have gotten better during this past months. I like the continuity you achieved at 0:09. Revise the lick at 0:12, do it sliding and not with hammer-ons.

Just practice 0:26 by itself some fews times. I think you went a little too high on that bending.

The guitar sounds in tune this time. You should always do the same for all videos, and actually for every practice session and gig that you have. It's crucial.

Posted by: MirkoSchmidt Jan 22 2010, 05:17 PM

what do you think about it?
i wrote much about my feeelings to the video, but i delete it. first i want to hear you, then i will told you what i think!

i would be glad to get comments from anyone else who see that! what can i do better?
(Or am i the only one who read the MTP boards from other guys???)

Posted by: Gitarrero Jan 26 2010, 08:32 PM

Hi Mirko,
actually, I read most of the MTP boards. I think I will sign up for one of the next MTPs...
I think you did great, I see great improvements regarding your earlier posted videos.
Is there a chance to record the guitar on your computer and mix it with the backing track (with a software like reaper) ? This would make your sound so much better, because now I personally think the backing is a bit to loud and one can hear much of the pick noise.
Greetings
Gitarrero

Posted by: edguy Jan 26 2010, 09:11 PM

Hey Mirko,

i also read your MTP board and i think gitarero is right here. Try to use a DAW like Reaper or Audacity and mix it with the backing and don't use the sound from your cam.

Here is a good video for you: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/misc-lessons/gmc-video-recording-tutorial-273641234/

I learned everything about video recording for GMC there. David Walliman explain its very good.

I like your playing in the video but with better sound it would be even better.

Hope that helps

Posted by: Daniel Realpe Jan 26 2010, 09:13 PM

I think your take is very good actually! the harmonic at 0:43 is amazing!! spot on! Your timing is great! your bendgins have improved a lot since earlier videos,

In general there are very few things to improve, almost none, for instance the second bend on 0:52 went a little too high.

I would suggest that you move on and start working on more challenging material because you have this one down. The more material you learn, the more you will improve.

I think the suggestions about sound quality made by Guitarrero are very valid and they are not hard to implement.

Posted by: Gitarrero Jan 27 2010, 11:59 AM

Hi Mirko,
I use this little device ( http://www.behringer.de/EN/Products/UCA222.aspx ). You can plug it into your amp and connect it to your PC via USB. I bought it in a bundle with a v-amp 3 and the energyXT software for 100€, but you can get the UCA222 for about 35€ alone.
It is easy to use, I don't want to miss it anymore!

Posted by: MirkoSchmidt Jan 28 2010, 08:43 PM

needless to say, that i havent worked on that very much... i havent the time this week to practice much, sad... i love that solo lick! have to work much on them, sounds great!

i hope to make the rthym stuff on saturday!

thanks for the feedback guys! im glad to get response! yeah, i have to buy some recording stuff! i opened a thread in the gear.forum for that!

Hi Mirko,

The first Mr. Brownstone lick sounds pretty cool! Very good job. A couple of things, at 0:16 there’s a slight timing issue, very small but let me mention it. And next, get it up to tempo, I’m pretty sure you can do it. To achieve that, don’t change your technique, use the same exact technique you are using at that slower tempo. Just do it faster.

The second lick is played very well, although the point of it is to play it as fast as possible, so set a goal for it and keep on building up speed. To me it still sounds too slow at that speed. Again, use the same technique you are using at that tempo.

I guess what I want to tell you is that you should go ahead and start taking more risks regarding speed. I think you are playing too safe which is good to start with but I think now you can challenge yourself confidently. Don’t worry about mistakes, it’s impossible not to make them in the first place but you have to go through that before mastering speed.

How did you go with the REC take?

Posted by: MirkoSchmidt Jan 30 2010, 08:26 PM

hey, i take the "Vintage hard Rock"-video for REC that i posted before... i didnt had the time, to make a better one!

the problem at the moment is, that im close before a very important test for my master school! i wasnt in school all the class- units and thats why i have to learn pretty much because the test is in 2 month and im really bad!

of course i was playing the guitar last week, but not that much i have to do to spped up that licks!

i think next month wont get better and so please dont await big improvments from me!

Posted by: Daniel Realpe Jan 30 2010, 09:11 PM

Hi Mirko!

I think this month has been very productive on your side and you have improved a lot in different techniques specially in bending strings.
I’m very happy with you as a mentoree because you show interest and dedication to your assignments and completed them all.

For next month we’ll keep on working on material that would help you improve your technique, rhythm and ear even further but if you want we can lower the work load since you told me you are going to be more busy in school.

Let me know of any special technique you feel that you need to work on or maybe an style of a particular band/guitarist.

Here’s the link to your January’s REC take:

Hey, we can work on the same stuff like the last two month! im sure i can improve my bending technique and my speed to a higher level and i want to do that before i start working on other stuff!

i would be glad if i can have short assignments, i will not have much time the next weeks but i want to practice speed! last week the problem was: i need so much time to learn the riffs, that the week was over before i had time to speed it up!
with short riffs i can train more to get them really fast!

Posted by: Daniel Realpe Feb 4 2010, 03:57 PM

all right Mirko,

we'll keep on working on those important topics next month,

I'll give you the assignments soon,

have you thought about the REC lesson?
