GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Replacement For Shure Sm7b?

Posted by: Todd Simpson Oct 27 2020, 12:40 AM

I guess time changes all things. The Shure sm7b has been a go to mic for studio and podcasting and just about everything in between for quite some time. It sounds great, very solid build, etc. The folks at SHURE have now made a new mic meant to serve the exploding podcast community specifically. This one has an app, of course, and USB C, of course, as well as XLR. So folks doing their production using a phone/tablet/etc. can now hook a very nice mic up and bam. Instant audio/video setup for recording. Works like a real mic too, XLR to interface/mixer/etc. I wonder how long it will take til every mic under the sun has optional digital connection as well as XLR just to keep it a viable product now that live music has taken such a severe down dive.

I knew 1-2 people regretting buying it as it should be heald very close and not good at low level speaking.

Good to know. I am guessing they used a cheaper capsule to save money as they added more electronics inside for more digital connections. The video demos I saw like this one were people speaking at full volume mostly. But if it's not good on whisper quiet stuff, it's not gonna make a great podcast mic. More of a one purchase route to podcasting, skip the interface, if it's just a one man show, bam, your ready to podcast/twitch/obs, etc. Most of the reviews seem positive but they also feel like adverts rather than real reviews. Shure is pushing this pretty hard.

Agreed, another fact is I highly suspect it made a name after Michael Jackson, James Hetfield etc.used it on their albums. We often read users looking for a mic. good for both guitar and vocal, the sm7b being good for podcast and vocal may a good selling reason.

Being dynamic and needing lots of preamp gain, might be really good specific to loud vocalists.

It' the go to Mic for screamers.

I tend to look at Thomann's Tbone brand versions of mics now. They do a very good job at a much lower price point

SM7B sells for around $400 USD.
MV7USB with more features as well as a more complicated build sells for $250 USD.
I doubt they're really even the same mic.
*A standard SM7B requires a decent mic pre to get enough level to take advantage of it's sonic attributes. If you search sm7b in "shopping" you'll notice it's often bundled with some type of line booster like the Cloudlifter. It's the nature of the beast.

Companies like Blue, Samson and Audio Technica have been making XLR/USB combo mics for a few years now.

It's a great price for all the features. At that price it's not going to be quite as good as a real one with preamp and interface. Then again, that 3 part signal chain would cost a lot compared to the new mic. It's meant to serve a very specific niche and I think it will serve it well.
