A great insight in to how much influence classical music has had on western music in general. It's truly pervasive. To get away from it, you really have to go east. Eastern music, in particular music from Arab countries, makes wide use of micro tonal scales and continuously variable tonality and time signature. The music sort of flows, rather than following a hard time signature. This is also the root of what has become "New Age" music which is a sort of blending of Eastern elements along with some Jazz elements. I lately bought the most rectn albums by the awesome eastern metal bands Orphaned Land and Melechesh. While Melechesh is somewhat more black metal-ish, I would recommend Orphaned Land to anybody here as they mix lots of metal styles plus eastern melodies to outstanding songs. Based in the Netherlands now I think. I haven't heard much of their stuff but I was sort of hoping it would bring a bit of an Eastern tinge to mix. I"ll check out Orphaned as well. Thanks for the tip Speaking of Western/Baroque traditions, anybody dig Nightwish? They are virtually uknown here in the states but are considered the progenitors of the Symphonic / Gothic Metal movement that is gaining quite a bit of traction in the Global Metal community. They have influenced a variety of bands from Lacuna Coil to Epica. Their original vocalist is a fully qualified Opera singer and sort of started the "Classically trained Mezzo Soprano Female" singer leading a metal band tradition that has flowered since. In this vein of metal, the Baroque influence is quite clear. Classical orchestration, sometimes with a full orchestra and vocals derived directly from traditional operatic forms. Honestly, this music is simply over the heads of many metal fans here in the states. Music education is one thing we just don't do that well here it seems. Many of our best musicians are entirely self taught. This has had a positive impact in some respects, but negative in others. The general ability of listeners to appreciate complex musical forms is somewhat diminished here as compared to Europe which saddens me greatly. I hope this changes as time goes on. I saw them live opening for Kamelot last year. As for eastern metal, both Orphaned Land and Melechesh bring quite a bunch of traditional eastern/arabian melodies into their music.
