Hey,

i have a problem with my epiphone les paul custom.

im trying to learn the https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Ballad-and-Blues-II/ lesson.

but the sustain from my guitar sucks. if i bend a full step in the 15 fret on the higher e string it sounds like a joke.
i've recorded it. its no matter if im playing with the bridge or the neck pick-up.

its so annoying sad.gif
i cant feel the blues without a great sustain.

thanks, people!

Maybe your action is too low and you are fretting out? That would be my first guess. If anything, new pickups might be necessary. Also, if you are using a plugin as an amp, try playing with the noisegate a little bit.

its no matter if im playing heavy or low. i can play a note so hard as i can. if i play a tone normally it is the same problem but a little bit longer. i've recorded the example with a plugin. but there was no active noise gate and if i play over my amp its the same problem sad.gif

The action might just be too low in that general area, or your guitar might need new fret wire(s). Typically the action is different at frets 0 and 9, so that is still a viable possibility. My suggestion is to take it in to a luthier to see if they can diagnose it. However, I am sure that a lot more people will have answers I haven't thought of, or am unaware of. I am not an expert, I just happen to know a few things. I am sorry I could not help. laugh.gif

Stuff you can try yourself.

I would raise the action a hair bit see if it helps. Because like Nihilist1 is pointing out if say the 18th fret is a tad higher then when you bend it actually dampens the sound and will cause it to cut the sustain short.

If you have a capo put it on the 22nd fret lock it down, then take your finger and press down on either E string. Look down the neck to around frets 7-9, is there a gap? Does it bow towards the strings or even away? If its drastic you will need to have the truss rod adjusted. If its just a hair different then I wouldn't worry about it.

If you take it to a luthier ask them about maybe having it setup and see if it needs a fret level and then to polishing the frets as well. That will make all the frets equal height and with the polishing it will make them not only shinny but make it smoother to bend.

Also, if the pickups are too high, the magnetic pull of the pickup will dampen the string. How high is too high depends on how strong the magnets are in the pickups.
You can also use a compressor to increase your sustain.

That example doesn't sound as though the string is 'choking' so therefore I'd assume that your neck relief is OK.
My first suggestion (as Greg has already mentioned) would be to lower your pickups. Possibly add a compressor/sustainer into your signal chain too.
What gauge strings are you using? The heavier the strings the more sustain you'll get.

What sort of gear setup are you using Manuh ?

I've often found that digital fx type distortion is weak when it comes to sustain.

mh maybe the bridge pick up is a little bit to high. i will check it if im at home. and the trick with the truss rod too.
i use ernie ball hybrid slinky (9-46) strings and i played the guitar over my toneport with gearbox and over an orange AD30 amp.

so i think it isnt the amplifier. the gibson les paul studio from a friend has a great sustain with my toneport..

thanks for your suggestions!

i will come back if i had tried it smile.gif

thanks!
