Hey all!
Just want to start out by saying a big thanks to all those who participated and gave up their time for this collaboration, very much appreciated!! This has been another great learning experience for me, and to hear everybody's different takes was fantastic and sometimes surprising!! The comments are more for me to try and convey what I heard rather than a critique as such, I would like you come back and discuss anything regarding this collab in here and hopefully we can all benefit from this! SRV_collab_final_mix_5.7.09.mp3 ( 9.81MB ) Number of downloads: 256 1. IVAN MILENKOVIC 0.00-3.40 The Take: Well what can I say? When I asked for you to take part I didnt mean for you to do it all yourself ! Seriously though mate this was pretty awe inspiring stuff for a one take improvisation, I heard all sorts of little gems in this that I will be blatantly stealing from you and using in my own playing! The only problem was that you didnt give me a "No backing" take so you will notice the volume swells towards the end of the take because I tried to blend in the blank backing, hardly noticeable! The Tone: Very SRV tone for my money, it came off very well, which, to be honest, is not a surprise is it! 2. STED 3.40-4.34 The take: didnt really give this the attention it deserved but I want to learn from my mistakes so I'm leaving my origignal take in the mix, seems there was some recording glitches in there as well! The Tone: sounded ok at the time but I dont think its among the best on here, I would love to know what you guys used!! 3. DEADEVIL 4.35-5.25 The Take: Loved the opening phrase, very cool in my book! You seem to have a good understanding for the feel of the blues and dont overplay it but use good techniques in the right places, I really liked it mate! I think you lost it a little towards the end but overall mate this was a really great take on Stevies style! The Tone: Excellent tone, not too much drive and came through the mix very well, would like to know what gear you used mate! 4. KUBA 5.26-6.20 The Take: What struck me all the way through the take was the amazing dynamics you had in there, I could almost sense what was coming next as you lead the solo through highs and lows, it really was like a story being told, you had some classic stevie tricks in there too that I instantly recognised!! the other thing I like is the way you weave in and out of the major/minor feel, I know this is part and parcel for blues but it just seemed very fluid when you did it! The tone: Quite mellow but full of feeling, you made the guitar really cry in those bends mate! I suspect that you like playing blues!! 5. LEEDBREAK 6.21-7.12 The Take: Well, talk about different!! You used a lot of feel in there like you said and I think it came off ok, a lot of the notes were out of key but because you intended them to be it kind of works to my ears, you seemed to stalk around the fretboard going off on tangents and then coming back into key and resolving to strong tones, I think thats why you got away with it! This was a really interesting and surprising take mate and I think you pulled it together to give us something really outside the box! The tone: Really great tone there, very easy to work with and worked well with the backing, great job mate! 6. PAIVA 7.12-8.07 The Take: This was one of my favourite takes, I really liked the mix of Blues licks interspersed with the fast legato runs, I couldnt quite figure out what scales they were, harmonic minor maybe? but they were used for effect and not just as a technique showcase and it works really well to my ears mate, you have a good grasp of the blues and technique in abundance mate! The tone: I really struggled with the tone you laid down here, it was thick with low end frequencies and I had to flatten nearly all the bass response in the EQ, it turned out ok in the end though so no harm, no foul! Maybe you could share with us what gear you used etc? 7. PRAETORIAN 8.08-8.57 The Take: First of all Ben, thanks for taking part, I know you had your doubts but I'm really glad you did! again like Ivan you didnt give me a "no backing" take so I had to blend the two together so the backing may sound a little strange in places! I think you left it a bit long in the beginning before you started, pauses and off beat starts are very cool but this just went on a little too long for me, it needed a phrase in the first bar really. When you did get into it I think you did an excellent job, a little shakey on some bends but that will come with time, your note choices were spot on and you followed a simple but effective rhythym all the way through, a great job all round mate, I'm glad you took part! The tone: the tone you used was a twangy style which can work well with this type of backing, I think a little more pick attack would be a good thing mate, when using a thin tone like this you can get some great results by varying the picking hand technique, try it and see!! I would try and get a little more volume on your recordings too, you want to be able to cut through the backing a little more, Ivan is the master of tone, have a look at how he does things in his lessons mate! 8. ROGER 8.58-9.51 the take: Brilliant take Roger, very enjoyable and dripping with bluesy licks and chops, I loved the bends in there and the all the different scales used, some dorian in there I think? Anyway I really liked everything you did here and thanks for taking part. The tone: Probably the nicest tone here, that strat of yours sounds amazing! it sat really nicely with the backing and was very clear with just the right amount of drive. 9. STAFFY The take: I just loved the opening mate, that major sounding lick at the start was just perfect for me (I shall be stealing it immediately and taking all the credit ) again you have a great feel for the blues and seem to really blend the major and minor feel together really well, I think this was probably the one that sounded most like Stevie for me, I suspect (Having looked at your myspace) that you play a lot of blues and that confidence in your style really shines through on the take, really liked it mate, thanks! the tone: Brilliant tone mate, must be a tubescreamer being used there! there was a little bit of noise in the background, did you record this from a mic'd amp? If not it really has a great natural tube sound and I want know what gear you used immediately Well thats all of them, if anyone wants to discuss the collab then please just post in this thread and hopefully we can all benefit! Thanks again to all participants, hope this was as much fun for you as it was for me! This post has been edited by sted: Jul 5 2009, 05:57 PM |

First of all I wanna say thanks to Sted who put this collab together.. It was great fun!
You asked what I used, so here it is: The Amp (Fender Hot Rod Deluxe) is miced with two SM57, one in front and one in distance... The guitar is a Mexican Strat with 012 strings and standard mics, I used my Boss OD 20 who got a preset for tube screamer which is great... Nothing else than a little reverb in the mix.... //Staffay -------------------- Guitars: Ibanez AM-200, Ibanez GB-10, Fender Stratocaster Classic Player, Warmouth Custom Built, Suhr Classic Strat, Gibson Les Paul Standard 2003, Ibanez steel-string Amps: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Marshall JMP 2103, AER 60 Effects: BOSS DD-20, Danelectro Trans.
