GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Back To The 80s Collaboration

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 22 2014, 05:16 PM

This time we offer you a unique opportunity to take part in an 80s rock collab.

The backing track is provided by none other than our own Guido - and it's a carefully arranged up tempo rock groove with a genuine 80s rock feel.

This is the perfect opportunity for you to jam with the pentatonic scale, and apply some of the new tricks and techniques you have learned at GMC.

Working with collabs give you the type of input you cannot achieve when practicing on your own - so even if you feel shy about this, you should give it a serious try. You will improve in unpredictable ways.

-------------------------------------------

BACKING TRACK:  Back_to_80s_Backing_Track.mp3 ( 1.68MB ) : 1244

This collab is based on Guido's http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Rhythm-Guitar-80s-Rock/ lesson.

Tempo : 160 BPM

Key : G minor

-------------------------------------------

Here's everything you need to know about how to enter this collaboration:

1. Download the backing track and open it in your recording software
2. Record your part in the recording software and with your video cam (if you have the possibility to record video).
You can record anything - a short fill part, rhythm based ideas, or a full lead part (solo).
3. Render one track containing your recording only - 16 bit wave file 44,1 kHz
4. Render one track containing both solo and backing track in an .mp3 format
5. Send us your video (preferably in .mp4 format)

As always, you can send us the last 3 files mentioned, using a dropbox link, or any other transfer service you are used to, by posting them in this thread or attaching them to a private message.

If you can't submit a video, you can send us only the audio files and some pictures of you - it will work out great as well!
The more pictures you send, the better will it be for editing in the final video!

When attaching/sending the collab files, please include the source file of the video as well.

Very important: IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER/ ADVANCED/ PRO/ GOD - all styles, approaches and all levels are welcome and you can even play just a short fill if you feel like it!

Bringing your contribution to this track and tribute to the GMC community is what really matters!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Collab tips:

As in the previous collabs, we want this one to stand out as much as possible, because this will give your playing and progress maximum exposure. So here's what we suggest:

Making short but polished and detailed lines will always give you better results! If you focus on a short part of the backing track, then you will most likely amaze yourself and others! No explicit need to play over the full backing track length, pick any amount of bars you feel most comfortable playing over. It is always better to come up with something short but catchy or memorable!

FULL PREVIEW!!! My FAVE bit is at the end where I rip off a melody line from some famous guitar player whose name escapes me smile.gif

*WE ARE GOING TOO BE LEARNING THESE LICKS THIS WEEKEND IN VIDEO CHAT!!*

Using my new boutique OD on this one!!!! The Fuhrmann Tube Drive pedal. Sorta their flavor of "Tube Screamer" clone. I keeps all the warmth that a lot of OD pedals can strip out. Sounds like a tube preamp! Using it to drive TH2 a bit harder and it works wonders!!!!!

Gonna stick it in front of my ELEVEN RACK to see how that works smile.gif

Yup!!! It makes a fine replacement for my much prized "Bulb Deluxe" which I didn't think could ever be replaced. But guess what, it can! smile.gif I heard MARCO DE ROSS using this pedal and was impressed by punch/bite, so I added it to my pedal board in addition to the SUPER METAL DRIVE 2. I'm guessing most folks will not need a boost to pair up with a 2 channel high gain distortion box, but I gotta say, I ran it in to my velocity power amp/cab and it sounded like a Mesa on 12!!!!

Wow, that sounds great man smile.gif

To be honest, I didn't think it would be that easy to replace the Pro Tone pedal, but unfortunately, it's hard for me to make a statement based on what I heard from other folks.

Out of what I have tried so far, I liked the Shiba Drive and the MXR Zakk Wylde best of all. The TS 808, that one was interesting, but somehow it didn't deliver the punch that the Zakk Wilde has. Notorious little fella biggrin.gif

FULL PREVIEW!!! My FAVE bit is at the end where I rip off a melody line from some famous guitar player whose name escapes me smile.gif

*WE ARE GOING TOO BE LEARNING THESE LICKS THIS WEEKEND IN VIDEO CHAT!!*

https://soundcloud.com/techniqueswithtodd/80s-guitar-rawk-collaboration-project-full-preview-with-backing

Great solo and tone mate! You used the tube drive, and what else did you use to record it?

I didn't think the anything would touch the pro tone either. The pro tone is still more flexible due to the diode switch, but in the position I used the switch, the tube drive I'm using now actually has more attack and sounds a pinch beefier. I don't know what kind of bits they use inside this thing but it must be nice bits as the results are quite spiff. It does remind me of an old tube screamer, which is what I liked about the pro tone. But some how it's a bit more aggressive and cuts through the mix a bit better smile.gif

QUOTE (Cosmin Lupu @ May 2 2014, 05:13 AM) *
Wow, that sounds great man smile.gif

To be honest, I didn't think it would be that easy to replace the Pro Tone pedal, but unfortunately, it's hard for me to make a statement based on what I heard from other folks.

Out of what I have tried so far, I liked the Shiba Drive and the MXR Zakk Wylde best of all. The TS 808, that one was interesting, but somehow it didn't deliver the punch that the Zakk Wilde has. Notorious little fella biggrin.gif

I used the TUBE DRIVE pedal and the fuhrmann NOISE GATE pedal going in to OVERLOUD TH2. I used a double wah in the patch, two "auto wah" pedals smile.gif One at the head and back of the pedal chain. Here is the patch for download!

Some awesome soloing going on here. The backing track is 80s to the core, reminds me of this...

And I remember LoverBoy being my favorite band in 9th grade, thinking they had it all, until I heard my first dose of Randy Rhoads playing Crazy Train - that single point in history changed my mind about music.

Interesting! I'm now starting to experiment with amp emulator plug gins, and the next step will be to try my two Tube Screamer emulators (visual sound Jekyll & hide and joyo overdrive) as preamps to see how the sound changes, if it's improved or not.

Hey mate! Killer player here - you have nice technique and chops! You could arrange the licks a bit more in the final take, in order to have a clearer direction in the take - there are moments, especially towards the ending in which you are a bit static smile.gif

Sounding pretty cool. I think you have a lot of great runs. I would maybe rearrange some sections. When I think of a lot of 80s solos, they usually happen in similar fashions.

Come out guns a blazen
Show off with some pinch harmonics/dive bomb/cool noisy stuff
A good melodic memorable part
Then throw your fastest most impressive part on the way out.

Don't forget to try using a REAL overdrive pedal after your guitar and before the emulator smile.gif

No matter what I've tried, even stacking emulators, they all sound better when being hit with some cleanish boost from a real pedal as "preamp" smile.gif

Hi friend! There are many great licks and ideas there. There are also some lines near the end that are a bit undefined. I would mark those small parts that aren't strong and replace them with new ideas. I also think that your tone could be better. Your guitar is a bit weak and without body (bass mids). What are you using for your guitar sound?

biggrin.gif I didn't really buy Todd's guitar... I've had that one for a few years now... and had no idea that Todd was doing his take with the same guitar, but it only makes sense to use that one for an 80's collab.

Thanks guys for the kind words..... Much appreciated.

I am completely stupid!!! mad.gif I really made a fatal mistake... Right after the announcement of this collab I downloaded the backing track, slowed it down as I usually do and jammed a bit to find some ideas. Then unfortunately I had to stop playing guitar for several days because there was so much work to do in my job. When I finally came back to this I thought I had some great and crazy ideas for this collab and I practiced quite a lot. But - for some stupid reason I was convinced that the original background track was at 140 bpm instead of 160 bpm! Man - I am really silly! So unfortunately I cannot be part of this collab because I am simply not able to play my solo at 160 bpm huh.gif
But since I've already made the video - here it is:

Huargo, I'm really digging the hybrid picking at the beginning and your sweeping sounds damn good.

Procyon, it is a shame about the tempo man, you should definitely try and get that solo in. I really like that quick hammer/tap part at :20. Fits perfectly with the backing.

Ladies and gentlemen! Here's the final mix! We couldn't have done this without you, so allow me to congratulate you and thank you for being a part of this!

Gabriel

SteveGuitar: Hi mate, your take has been a cool way to open the collab. As we didn’t have the only guitar take, we added a radio effect and used it to give more impact to the first part. Your whole take was very interesting, I hope that you can join and provide us all the needed takes for the next one. Keep rocking!

Beat: Your background is the most amazing one I have seen at a collab!! Your phrasing is very defined and tasty; I like your composition a lot. You don’t look 100% relaxed while you play in front of the camera, try to enjoy it more. Thanks for joining!

Bleez: It really cool how your take fits with Beat’s and also with Delete’s takes. I like how you combined some palm muted ideas with more bluesy stuff. Very rocker. Thanks!

Deleted: I wonder if you have been at the same room with Bleez jamming over this one. Don’t you think that your takes work amazing together. You should create a full two guitars collab. Your playing is very tight and your composition melodic and tasty. Thanks for joining!

Huargo: Good solo mate! Your phrasing is dark and deep and your playing very tight. There was something weird in the middle of your solo, some bends, and that’s why DG appears there to complement your playing. Thanks for being part of this collab!

DG: Your playing and tone are top level. I also think that you have a very good sense of groove and rhythm when you play licks and double strings ideas. Thanks!

Marius: Pure majesty! You rock friend.

GregC1: Your solo is killer! Your take has a great balance of melody and fast ideas. I enjoy how consistent your vibrato, bending and legato techniques are. Keep on rocking!!

Jeroen: Another amazing background and lots of explosive guitar licks. Your solo sound very good over the backing and it’s a killer intro to Todd’s killer solo. Thanks for joining this one mate!

Todd: That guitar is pure 80’s!! Thanks for those amazing licks!!

TonyK: Thanks a lot for joining this one. There were some things to improve on your take regarding tone, playing and composition. We can discuss about this via PM, just write me!

Procyon: Good playing man, you solo fits great with the backing and your technique is very precise. Thanks for your take!

Mroberts: hehehe as I’m missing our jams at the chat room I decided to jam with you at this collab. What do you think? Doesn't it sound great??? Thanks for being part of this one and for jamming with me!

Cosmin: I can see that you don’t only have a new amazing guitar, your playing is getting better and better. It is a very good and creative solo C-man. Keep on rocking!!

Cosmin

SteveGuitar: Hey there amigo! As Gabi said, we had to agree upon a short but sweet solution to make your take bring as much as possible to the collab - the intro! Always very important! Next time, I'm sure we can feature more of your take if you also provide a video!

Beat: Nice melodies here mate! I've noticed an evolution in your melodies and a great direction you have taken in respect to this, in all your takes! Keep it up!

Bleez: Great team work with Beat and Deleted on this one - as usual, your musical personality is shining in this take as well, with the aid of those pinch harmonics biggrin.gif

Deleted: Hehe! Looks like the three of you made a nice team on this collab - you somehow managed to telepathically fit your take to bleez's and Beat's and what a nice outcome you guys had!

Huargo: Hey mate! Nice lines and tight playing here, nothing much to add aside what Gabi said, but It was great that your take and DG's could go well together!

DG: As usual, great lines and playing DG - I love the way in which you completed the main theme and gave Huargo a little palce to conclude with his run!

Marius: You rock bro! And with a touch of fusion wink.gif Hehe!

GregC1: Hey man! Aside from the fact that your take is great as usual, Gabi managed to match you in a great duo with Marius! Great technique and control, man!

Jeroen: Hey mate! Looks like this style suits you very well and this can be seen in your licks and overall touch on this backing track! Thanks for joining and keep up the good work here!

Todd: You are extremely proficient at this sort of playing! Great solo man! And the guitar is from the same movie as well wink.gif biggrin.gif

TonyK: Hey Tony! great to see you joining every collab man! This is surefooted way to progress wink.gif Your phrasing direction can be improved and the articulation as well, so keep working hard and let us know what we can help you with in the mean time!

Procyon: I am so glad you managed to pull things off! You have a nice solo and the playing is great! Remember how you didn't wanna try to bring it up to speed? Well, here's proof you can!

Mroberts: Thank you for joining bro! You did a great jam with Gabi and your lines are nice as usual! I hope to see you more often in the forum!

Gabriel: Hehe! Short but sweet and supportive for Mark! Great playing, my friend!

Thank you all again and don't forget to join the http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=52257&st=0&start=0

Awesome playing everyone and congratulations - this collab video rocks! smile.gif

I can't stop watching it on repeat. It is really cool how your phrasing blended together to create a unique yet so 80s vibe.

Here's my take.... the little harmonic idea I play at the start may have been stolen ever so slightly from DeGroots solo ph34r.gif but in my defence its cool to play and I cant yet steal any of the more technical licks cool.gif

Cool take Bleez! But what really caught my eye was the finish on your Les Paul. My brother has a "The Paul" with the same gold burst finish. The "The Paul" that he has is a solid body flat topped Gibson. Anyway, that particular finish looks great under a black light. Check it out if you haven't discovered it already! smile.gif

Great playing on this collab everyone! Rock on!

It's indeed a great finish, bleez! And as a plus, you don't need to wipe it at all, right? biggrin.gif

hey thanks rich smile.gif I really love that finish, it's like shiny and matte at the same time smile.gif Ive not seen it under a black light, one of the UV type bulbs? I'll totally need to get one.
Ive never seen 'the paul' model, I had to google them. I watched a dude playing one on youtube.... it sounded amazing smile.gif They must be a bit rare.

I actually dont know! Ive never had a guitar with this kind of nitro-cellulose lacquer. Ive not quite figured out how to clean it yet smile.gif

Yeah that's it , a UV bulb. I don't know what kinds of changes may have been made to the paint and finish over the years.
Hopefully it still glows. cool.gif My brothers' Gibson is a product of the 80's I think, but it glows strong under those UV bulbs. When I was gigging back in the 90's, I was using it for only one song. It was setup with an open tuning to play More Human Than Human. And we incorporated those UV bulbs as part of our lighting sequence for that song.
