I prefer a hardshell case all the way. I feel that my instrument is protected that way and it saw a lot of travel around which I have bumped it so many times. It feel on the floor in the bus in the corners (crazy driver) many times too. It just gives me that piece of mind as gig bags don't really protect the instrument against someone leaning on it or something which if always a possibility during travel. Case is bulky and heavy to carry around but I think it preserves the instrument so much better.

A gig-case ,gigbag which is stiff and hard from the inside, as a case!

I like both. Never noticed any bias towards gigbag or hard case - ?.
I use a couple of these ... http://www.monocase.com/mono-electric-guitar.asp You can get for about $180.00 (US). A little pricey but they're compact enough that they don't freak out the the flight attendants when you take them on the plane. They have neck support as well as extra padding at the butt end near the lower strap button. They also make for acoustics, dbl cases, bass, accessories, etc. These are incredible! ... http://reunionblues.com/product/202/RBG1 *(watch the little video!). Very expensive though. Depends on the situation, gig bag for teaching/small gigs. Case for travelling!

Good question! I have cases for my guitars and pedals, but I use them depending on where I will play. If I will have to carry with me those things (mostly on tours when we travel on normal bus) I prefer a gig bag to be able to carry it and walk some blocks. If everything travels in our Van, I prefer the cases because these ones protects the instruments much more.

There are some extremely good gig bags out there, offering good protection and are a little easier than a case for transportation, but they do come at a price!

I also have a double (electric) gig bag. Definitely helps out. Mine does not have the rollers though.

Lol! Too much for me.
They're all leather and essentially hand made. The leather gig bags have always been expensive. Even in the late 70s the 'Reunion Blues' bags - which started as a co. that made 'leather bags for musicians - were almost $300.00 then.
