What Gear Do You Want Next?, More Gear Lust

I know, I know. Yet another Gear Acquisition Syndrome thread. I'm not even a gear head as many of you know. I like a guitar and an amp. I then like to plug said guitar into said amp and make sounds come out. I then like to forget about the technological things occurring and then concentrate my energies on crafting music and releasing it, which is my absolute favourite part of the whole process.

But, occasionally, even I go weak at the knees for a new piece of gear.. and, as some of you may already have guessed from my posts in recent times, I want an 8.

Here it be; the Ibby RGIR28F.

Attached Image

Part of the Iron Label range, aimed at people who want to make heavy stuff happen with their wood. I took Todd's advice and decided to steer clear of the base level RG8 and have set my sights on this. The annoying thing is waiting until the right moment to strike. (in other words, money) but my decision is pretty much 100% made and it's just a matter of time until you see me with one.

Now why do I want it? I want to go lower. I don't listen to that djenty stuff or whatever but I do love the sounds of the 8 string. It's disgustingly majestic and I want some of that disgusting majesty for myself. The challenge will be not to sound like everybody else by overdoing the droning low F#, as tempting as it will be! But here's the thing. I love writing music so part of that is writing music which is new to me. Pushing the boundaries on each new release. The abundance of awesome gear we have makes it easier than ever for us musicians to stretch our musical legs at a much faster rate than was possible before. A kid can learn guitar on a 6 string, complete with pro sounding guitar software at his/her disposal and then be churning out gut busting riffage on an 8 string in a couple of years. It's all possible.

That means it's potentially possible for musicians to expand their musical voices like never before as well. What I call the Zeppelin effect. Led Zeppelin are one of those bands that have been able to get away with adding new things to their sound on each record yet still retain their fans. I think people would be disappointed if one of their records sounded the same as the previous one. Other bands haven't been able to get away with such experimentation, so it seems. Maybe I'm wrong and it's only in hindsight that Zeppelin have been lauded for being so musically open minded. Maybe at the time, people were really p****d. Either way, all this gear and guitar software means that you can pretty much tap into any sound you can conceive in your mind.

Doesn't mean you don't still have to practise, though. wink.gif

So, my one and only Q to you today is what gear are you lusting after right now But.... and this is the important part, WHY? What will it do for you that you can't do right now?

I've got my eye on a 2013 RG Prestige that was released for the japanese market. I just need to sell a guitar first

That guitar looks monstrous Ben! smile.gif

I'm currently not lusting about any specific piece of music gear though I must say that I'm just slightly getting an itch to try out other basses. Primarily, one made by Musicman or Fender Precision Bass. I have a Jazz bass which I really like and feel comfortable with but I must say that the tone is just slightly getting "the same" smile.gif On the other hand, I don't play often on my amp (I should!) and I still get amazed by its sound. I played both a gig and home practice stuff on it after a long pause in not using it (using home monitoring system for practice instead) and man - bass + amp sound is just wow. It's just the way amp reacts to dynamics and moves air that I tend to forget how cool it is.

Back to the topic though, I've been looking at PC builds lately and found some cool "lust" configurations but I don't think I'll pull the trigger just yet. This would probably be high up on my gear (GAS) upgrades list as I'd like to build a separate workstation for music and video production. Personally, I always find the recording process and fiddling with all that stuff as a bit of roadblock for my creativity and music, so I have this idea of trying to make the recording process as smooth as possible. Ultimately, everything should be installed, working well and setup so I can just plug in and hit the recording button and concentrate on music.

BTW - looking at guitarists exploring 7 string and now 8 string guitars really makes me wonder why I never went for a 5 or 6 string bass? smile.gif 6 string bass certainly looks like a beast smile.gif

Ooh, so a bit of balancing out what you don't want quite as much anymore as a new Ibby.. do you think you'll sell one?

Haha, it's weird how certain objects in life can make us feel like we're not worthy enough to own them, isn't it? It's BS, of course. If you want it, go for it!

Altho I've never felt the desire for Teles.. I just don't get it. They look weird and they're not particularly comfortable to play rolleyes.gif But that's ok, leaves more pointy guitars for me!

That does sound like a sensible upgrade... I'd love to sort my stuff out properly and make it hyper capable for the specific job. Tbh, I'd be a lot happier with faster internet speeds - our region is terrible! rolleyes.gif

And yeah, why no low B for you? Bass is about the bottom! biggrin.gif

The Martin? Yeah. And frankly - I can't afford it. So it's just a dream for now.
*It's a fair price for what it is. A 1971 w/OHSC that's had a crack repaired and a pickguard replaced.

What I want is a too good to pass up deal on a great fender strat. What I need is some kind of recording interface. I am very interested in trying out an Orange combo amp and a Kemper or Axe FX.

I'd like to get a seven string within the next year. Not sure what kind of model yet. I might sell one of my guitars to get one…

That Strat is quite the looker, isn't it?

Even I have to admit that the 9 is a bridge too far at this point in time laugh.gif

I don't even know what the extra string is...........

I like it (The Strat that is) the one coil on the pickups looks white but it's chrome.
Not the best demo but you can see the looks better here.

The 9 string set is Ernie Ball 9-String (.009/.012/.016/.026/.036/.046/.064/.080/.105) apparently standard tuning is EBGDAEBF#C# but some use EADGCFBbDG on mine and look at it as a short scale bass with an extended high range blink.gif

Over my head unsure.gif

Just ordered one of these. I know some people say the scale length is wrong for a 7 but the review below the pic says otherwise. Needed some retail therapy, lost a friend on Saturday so I bought this and will name it Bob after him.
