> IS THAT YOUR MAMA?

Nope didn't think so either. We all know parents don't get this.

I can show you how to be the virtuoso your folks could only dream about, but I first need your help:

* Pm me and I will show you where to start. I am online every day and I will help you out directly!

* Join my mentoring program. I will customize your learning experience in a way you haven't experienced before. We will have regular contact so that you can remain inspired every day and eventually reach a new level.

* Join my next video chat! GMC startpage holds a video chat schedule. We always cover a lot of ground and have fun. Remember that you don't need any previous knowledge, and you can be passive in the chat.

* Jam with me - you will find active collabs here.

* Post a topic on this board, guitar related or not - doesn't matter! You will find that chatting with instructors boosts your motivation to practice.

* You haven't missed my latest video lessons, have you?

* Oh and did you know that to become a killer guitarist you just need to focus on one thing? Everything
else is secondary. Pm me and I will explain.

..actually improvise?

Improvisation is a complex art which can be carried to incredible levels of deep self expression!

How do you guys see it? Is it difficult? Natural? Remember, improvisation can also happen when your girlfriend walks in and you just remembered you forgot to prepare dinner - what then? Of course....IMPROVISE biggrin.gif

I'm going to say for me it is difficult... however to be honest I have never really tried.

It is not an area of my playing that I have examined yet. Since I picked up the guitar I have mostly learned just songs and a few lessons here at GMC. I started my guitar journey at age 28 when I had a career, morgage and all that "life" stuff so time has always been an issue for me. Not to mention I didn't know about GMC right away so was doing things on my own with not much guidance. Someone elses songs were the "easy" route for me.

I've been "playing" for 5 yrs now and am still kind of in that rut of just learning songs but I am trying to get out of it. I am doing lessons with Ivan and he has already had me doing my own compositions which I did find difficult to work out. My theory knowledge is limited at best and I've never tapped into my creative side before so we are still strangers smile.gif I hope at some point I can really get creative and maybe even improvise over songs I already know and really make them my own.

Well, I strongly believe that as long as you accept the fact that you improvise in a lot of situations in life, you'll be able to do it on the guitar as well smile.gif it's like talking actually. You just have to choose the right words in the right context and use the tone of your voice to breathe life into them. I like to look at things in this way smile.gif

Cosmin, I refuse to believe that a gentleman such as yourself would ever be in that position.... biggrin.gif

That's a very good way to look at it. The amazing thing about life is we can apply skills we use in one area to every other area. It's like the Zen phrase (Here I go again) 'From one thing, know ten thousand things'

Also, music is a language like you say Cosmin.. we spend our formative years learning words and phrases.. and it's all how we choose to contruct a sentence.. what words we use.. and the rhythm of the conversation. smile.gif

Well, expect the unexpected biggrin.gif I am a gentleman but if my head is in the clouds thinking about I don't know what kind of guitar phrase or melody - I tend to forget about everything else in an instant biggrin.gif

I totally agree Rok, and I think learning other people's songs is the natural route to take for every musician.. it gives us a reason to play the instrument for one thing, why would we play unless we had something recognisable and fun to show for it etc ? smile.gif It opens the door for all of us into the world of music, keeps us inspired to keep learning more and makes us feel like we actually achieve something when we learn a new tune. I wouldn't look upon it negatively at all, learning well known songs really makes sense in a lot of ways..

If you are beginning to explore composing then it sounds you're taking the right steps with Ivan. Little projects where you have to come up with something are really helpful and, like anything, practice will make it easier.. smile.gif

Hehe... yes... there are too many times where my lovely and understanding other half has noticed that I'm thinking about something else and after trying to get away with saying 'Oh, nothing...' I eventually have to admit, rather embarassingly, that I was thinking about a riff or solo... smile.gif

Re-orchestrating stuff always works smile.gif for me at least. It gives me the opportunity to try and take someone's work at a different level in a different perspective.

For instance I'm working on an acoustic version of Bob Marley's "No woman, no cry" - it's gonna sound like John Mayer suddenly came up and turned reggae into country biggrin.gif I can upload it in the next days if you guys wanna hear it biggrin.gif

Thanks Ben... and i didn't mean for it to sound negative. Playing songs as you said kept me learning and gave that sense of accomplishment. Probably the reason I still have a guitar in my hand. And Ivan is great. I really like the approach he is taking to the lessons so far.

And Cosmin as for improvisation in life... that is all I do. I am not a planner, I just go with the flow. With my job even there is a certain amount of improvisation as nothing is ever black and white but many varying shades of grey.... so hopefully one day I can apply this to my playing as well smile.gif If that's the case maybe I am then next Jimmy Page laugh.gif wink.gif

I also completely agree that music is a language. It's a language that everyone may understand but interpret it in many different ways. You certainly can say many things with music... things one may not necessarily be able to say with words. I think this is why music is so universal. I personally have to have music on all the time.
