Improvisation is a complex art which can be carried to incredible levels of deep self expression! How do you guys see it? Is it difficult? Natural? Remember, improvisation can also happen when your girlfriend walks in and you just remembered you forgot to prepare dinner - what then? It is not an area of my playing that I have examined yet. Since I picked up the guitar I have mostly learned just songs and a few lessons here at GMC. I started my guitar journey at age 28 when I had a career, morgage and all that "life" stuff so time has always been an issue for me. Not to mention I didn't know about GMC right away so was doing things on my own with not much guidance. Someone elses songs were the "easy" route for me. I've been "playing" for 5 yrs now and am still kind of in that rut of just learning songs but I am trying to get out of it. I am doing lessons with Ivan and he has already had me doing my own compositions which I did find difficult to work out. My theory knowledge is limited at best and I've never tapped into my creative side before so we are still strangers I hope at some point I can really get creative and maybe even improvise over songs I already know and really make them my own. rok You are at GuitarMasterClass.net Don't miss today's free lick. You just have to choose the right words in the right context and use the tone of your voice to breathe life into them. It opens the door for all of us into the world of music, keeps us inspired to keep learning more and makes us feel like we actually achieve something when we learn a new tune. I wouldn't look upon it negatively at all, learning well known songs really makes sense in a lot of ways.. If you are beginning to explore composing then it sounds you're taking the right steps with Ivan. Little projects where you have to come up with something are really helpful and, like anything, practice will make it easier.. It gives me the opportunity to try and take someone's work at a different level in a different perspective. Playing songs as you said kept me learning and gave that sense of accomplishment. Probably the reason I still have a guitar in my hand. And Ivan is great. I really like the approach he is taking to the lessons so far. And Cosmin as for improvisation in life... that is all I do. I am not a planner, I just go with the flow. With my job even there is a certain amount of improvisation as nothing is ever black and white but many varying shades of grey.... so hopefully one day I can apply this to my playing as well If that's the case maybe I am then next Jimmy Page I also completely agree that music is a language. It's a language that everyone may understand but interpret it in many different ways. You certainly can say many things with music... things one may not necessarily be able to say with words.
