Do you enjoy guitarists who play the instrument AND put some type of show or performance? or do you mostly like guitarists who focus on the instrument and music?

These are the examples that came off the top of my head, maybe not really good ones, but you get the point

I like when the musicians also make a show around their music... I enjoy it!

At a live show, showing off is essential!

These two examples are a bit of an extremes, Buckethead puttin out very very big show, and Eric just playing, and not really showing off at all! I think it's important to find balance.

I personally like EJ better, his tone, artistic expression, smoothness, melodies are better then bucketheads dirty shredding (and nun-chucks biggrin.gif )

Showmanship is an important part, but I think it is how you do it. Buckethead has great things going on with the guitar, but the extra dancing and chucks, and the robotic guitar playing doesn't do anything for me.

EJ has a lot of showmanship in a balanced way...David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen on the other hand...well what can you say!

I love showmanship! BUT it has to be put out when you have to play difficult stuff tongue.gif

For instance, I go in mad monkey mode on stage only when I know I can do it without hurting the performance!

Here's my little recipe:

- before the soundcheck, I walk on stage and see the perfect spots which can come in handy in the key moments in the songs
- Always check the length of the cables you use and see how far off you can run
- make sure you can hear the guitar in all monitors around the stage if you move a lot - you don't want to run off and at some point...whooshh! no more guitar in your ears smile.gif
- always have a safespot - meaning you can hear EVERYTHING from there!

Of course, rehearse the choreography at the rehearsal room with the band! Don't think that you can nail it straight on stage without rehearsing it first - it doesn't come easy at all!

You see how Wes Borland gets crazy on stage and plays his stuff top notch, well, he worked a lot for that smile.gif consciously! And he does his body painting by himself tongue.gif

There's one more thing...if you don't move, your audience won't move either smile.gif AND I CAN'T STAND A SHOW WHERE PEOPLE STARE SILLY AND DO NOTHING biggrin.gif

Very interesting and good advice, C-Maestro ! Especially the bits about finding good areas on stage for movement and sound. I totally agree with you on the final point, I can't stand it either ! smile.gif

Must say MUSE best concert ever. cool.gif

Mat Bellamy the way he moves and plays and sings is amazing!! ohmy.gif

I appreciate the way some players play and love listening to them but can be a bit boring to watch at a concert.
