Sweeping In Lydian Advanced Plus Options

Hey Muris, this is my first posting I hope i'm doing this right! I've been a member for about a month and i'm trying to nail down most of your lessons. However in the lydian advanced, more specifically in the third part of the videos is very difficult, i'm having trouble moving as fast as you can, any further suggestions?

Also i was wondering if you can explain to me when can I incorporate, lydian scales, phrygian scales etc. How do you know when to use these types of sweeps in a solo, how can you incorporate them in songs. How did you know to use that sweep in your backing track for lydian, and how did you know lydian can be used with that backing track?

Hi Angelo and first of all welcome to GMC.

Your questions aren't so easy to answer and they
are actually related to theory mostly,
tho you're talking about sweeps and such.

First of all,you should get good knowledge about diatonic scales
like major,minor,7 modes etc.
You'll see that all these scales have 7 notes in total,8th one is
the same as 1st one,just in octave.
From that,you can build a chord on each of those 7 notes,
often called scale's degrees.
Those chords are sometimes major chords,sometimes minors etc,
depends of type of the scale and degree.

Sweeping is just a guitar technique used to play those chords
note by note,called arpeggios.

I would ask you to tell me more about your current theory
knowledge so I could give you detailed guides.

Hey Muris, Thanks for responding back, and happy new year to you as well.

I have no formal training, i've been playing guitar for about 10 years and all self taught from tablature and from friends. I can't read music other than guitar tablature. I'm not a bad player but i get board of playing the same things over hence why i joined GMC. I've been working on my own music and i can't seem to incorporate some of the tricks i have learned from your videos, hence all those questions. Could you suggest where i can learn more about those scales you mentioned, and if you could suggest how you incorporate your tricks (i.e. sweeps etc) into your songs.

As for sweeping i'm just going to keep on trying your sweeps and try to nail some of them. I guess practice makes perfect.

P.S. I just purchased a Vai Jem like yours. I absolutely love it

Hi Angelo.

First of all,I'd suggest you to take a look
at Andrew's theory lessons and find out more info
about all those scales but also about chords
which are usually played as arpeggios using sweeping.
As I said,sweeping is just a tool,
the thing is to know what to sweep!!
