Hey all!

I wanted to ask my fellow GMCrs a question about establishing and practicing rhythm. I'm kinda stuck on this one and I'm not sure how to practice to develop more right hand rhythm. I seem to be stuck in a powercord metal type mode and when I try to branch out I have a hard time. My brain wants to play one thing, but executing that is a whole different story.

Something I'm having trouble with is picking out 1 or 2 strings in a cord. I seem to only do well with open chords. So when I'm trying to pick only the G & D strings for a given cord in a rhythmic way, it's hard for me to do.

Lesson suggestions and tips are appreciated!!! wink.gif

Hi Gerald.

Like most things I'd advise slowing it right down with a metronome, making sure you're using a combination of upstrokes and downstrokes.

Also, an exercise I get many of my students to do it to play (to a metronome), one note in increasingly short note durations, like this:

Crotchets:
lX---X---X---X---l x4

Crotchet triplets:
lX--x--x--X--x--xl x4

Quavers:
lX-x-X-x-X-x-X-x-l x4

Quaver triplets:
lX-x-x-X-x-x-X-x-x-X-x-x-l x4

Semi-quavers:
lXxxxXxxxXxxxXxxxl x4

Use this exercise as a warmup or a technical exercise, starting slow, building up speed, and it should help!

Hope that helps.

David

Cool! I'll start using that. I should use this exercise with AP and I'm assuming I could adapt it any cord picking different stings. Say just the G&D of a Amaj7 bar chord?

Just practise more your right hand technique and it will come in time. Make practises where you use only two adjacent strings at a time and systematicaly build up the technique accross the fretboard. And go slow. smile.gif

Thanks for the tip Ivan!

Something that I'm working towards is being able to play some funky riffs on the guitar. I can crunch down on power cords all day long, but want to spice up my playing with more funky riffs and blues riffs.

What seems to be lacking is the control/technique of my right hand.

Thats right, you can even play just one string, its just for building up rhythm.

Actually I'm currently working on your 1st Heavy Metal for Beginners lesson! I have the first part of it down other than I sometimes have an issues getting the G string to ring clearly because the fat of my ring finger mutes the chord.

What you need to do man i relax your right arm and don`t tounch the scrachplate with your right hand. Also no anchoring your right hand on the bridge or enywhere else. Just wave it slowlu and fluedly in the air, keeping it relaxed and in the groove. THis is a general advice for every rhythm playing, so be aware of it all the time when practising. With you right hand tensed up you cant really get higher speed OR better precision. Even te pick has to be at the right angle wiht the strings and lighty between your fingers, because if you hold it strongly and not at a 90degree angle while strumming it will tend to fall out of hand at greater speeds.

Thanks for the tips! I tried to do that last night and noticed a little bit of improvement. I'll make sure to keep it going!
