In this Quick Licks, we are going to do a it of back and forth and some repeats on all six strings. In the video I'm playing a 7 string so ignore the lowest string. I"m not using the 7th Low B. The lick stops before it gets to the low B on a 7 string. The open E is the final note.
This way of running scales is a bit of a shredder tool. It helps train your fingers to play certain patterns and repeat certain notes. When played at sped the bit sound very impressive. It sounds like you are playing many more notes than are actually being played. Keep it clean but push you speed to the edge!

Attached File  67.gp5 ( 2.22K ) Number of downloads: 7824

Attached Image

BACKGROUND / COMMENTS: Lots of speed with just a bit of practice on this one! Give it a go!

Hit me up with any questions!
Todd

You see Ben? You spot things that I don't. Each note is a new destination for me. I must have some form of dyslexia. Its like I couldn't tell anyone how to get to my home from my work because I can't visualise any more than the next 1/4 mile. Sometimes when I'm driving I wonder if I've passed a certain landmark and then I come to it. I think this affects me in my learning ability.

I can cut it even further down for you. Second bar is the same pattern as the first bar, it's just been reversed smile.gif It's how my brain works though. I see patterns in almost everything (that has patterns). smile.gif

Most music is built on patterns, I suppose. This particular lick I see as a 3+5/5+3 lick. Seeing the smaller individual patterns can help in remembering it a bit more easily.

For instance in prog music, a usual way of achieving some differences is to subtract or add notes to a lick. This adds variation in both rythm and note choice, but if the first 5 notes are the same, or even the same pattern (but different places in the scale) it's less information to process and remember smile.gif

A silly example here:
Attached File  Audio_midi.mid ( 2.04K ) Number of downloads: 247

Maybe it's hard to grasp at first, so maybe the tab will give a clearer insight to it:
Attached File  tab.gp5 ( 1.98K ) Number of downloads: 247

See how the first 4/4 bar repeats in 9/8 but with an added note. Or in the 7/8 but a note less. Same with the 11/8. This is a bit of a silly example as it sounds a bit "crooked", but it was just to prove a point smile.gif

Also, here's an example with the riff from above with a full band (this was just put together in 5 minutes, so it's not too musical, but there are patterns with variation in all of the instruments):
Attached File  Example_riff.mid ( 11.45K ) Number of downloads: 249

And tab:
Attached File  Example_riff.gp5 ( 5.21K ) Number of downloads: 246

And finally example from above as MP3 with better sound from GP7:
Attached File  Example_riff.mp3 ( 1.94MB ) Number of downloads: 255

BINGO!!!! Very good eye on that. It's a 5+3 that goes in to reverse at the end. The notes repeat so one is really just playing the same notes in little loops. It's what makes it sound like there are so many notes in this lick. I'm just going back and forth and repeating things. It's a classic Paul Gilbert bit of shred trickery to make it sound like many more notes are actually happening, when in fact it's just covering the same ground by going a bit foward, a bit back. In the end, reverse keeps the ear of the casual listener from hearing it as one big repeat loop, it's just for variation. It drops to an open E so you can pull up your guitar and do an yngwie and let it ring on feedback smile.gif

It's a fun lick! It's a lot of notes, but most are the same notes. Give it a whirl!!

Still struggling to get it into my head. I'm terrible with back and forth patterns. It's something to do with my brain. Every time I walk out of a shop, I walk out and go back the way I came. When I used to play Tomb Raider, if I had to go into a cave five times and follow the same route five times until the last 1/4, I got it wrong every time. It might be linked to something in my head rolleyes.gif

It's great that you are still trying though! Have you tried focusing on the first bar? I know it can be tricky, but as said, 5 notes then 3 notes. Then reverse the pattern and play 3 notes then 5 on the next set of strings. Maybe another way would be to break it down into picking hand and fretting hand individually then combining them? smile.gif Or are you more familiar if it was in A minor for instance?

I don't think it's the key, it's having more than one pattern, my mind goes funky, it's Tomb Raider syndrome. I will get it recorded tonight or tomorrow night though wink.gif

I understand what you are saying, that's why I tried breaking it down and showing it's just the "same" 8-note pattern repeated 8 times smile.gif

By the way, I hope I haven't been too annoying here! That wasn't my intention smile.gif

Most certainly not mate. I'm always receptive of any help. Occasionally one gets that elusive light bulb moment that propels progress at warp speed for a while.

It's just me. I can remember patterns like, 1234 2345 3456, or 1357 3579, it's patterns like 1234, 2345, 5432, 3456, 4567, 7654 that throw me out, I even struggle to write that down laugh.gif maybe I'm just a numpty and need to go back to school or get a brain transplant rolleyes.gif

Thanks for your help smile.gif

Glad to hear that, mate. I could pretty easily list every combination of the numbers 1234 (from that one to the complete reverse there's a pattern to be spotted too - basically the numbers increase. 1234, 1243, 1324, 1342, 1423, 1423, then on to 2 being the first digit, then 3, then 4 ending the 6th variation at 4321). But I totally get where you are coming from, and I think I had a "Eureka!"-moment in relation to some of these things at one point. Obviously the above numbers approach does not work in every instance.

As for getting a brain transplant, can you grab a brain for me too when you're at the brain shop? Mine doesn't function that well in many other aspects (as you know) smile.gif

It's the longest one we have tried so far for sure. If you can get the first bar or two, it's a similar idea for most of the rest of it. Pushing to learn something at the edge of your ability is always a good thing imho smile.gif

Yup! Progress happens at the edge of ones ability, rarely within the comfort zone. When you feel something nearly impossible becoming possible, it's a wonderful thing.

Another thing so you know how my mind works, I had a tab book once, I was trying for ages to shuffle my fingers to play various triads, (I didn't know they were triads then, they were given different chord names in the TAB), I was getting in a right old tangle, I put the book down, picked it up a few months later and tried again for a few weeks, LIGHT BULB MOMENT! I realised that I could play them by just holding an E shape bar chord and either strumming the first three strings, the middle three string or the three bass strings in whatever position they were to be found, I nailed that song in 5 minutes laugh.gif It was only a simple song, can't recall it now, but you get the idea of my weird brain tongue.gif

Take 1, bit of fret buzz, need to adjust truss a little wink.gif
