Well Steve we don’t need to have a big introduction kind of thing because we already have become friends through the forum. I am obviously very excited about our match up and hope you are as well. Right now I just want to wait on the syllabus that should be posted soon and look that over. I will come up with a game plan for us and we can discuss it from there.

A few things I want us both to get out of this if nothing else is to have a whole lot of fun, show you what a great player you can become and develop a good honest friendship built on trust. I will always back up my reasons with truths and won’t mislead you in any way. If we can do this then we both win even if the end result is I don’t get help from Muris. All I ask is you take this time to do something for you. I know your really busy with GMC and your family at home but you need to dedicate some time for you my friend. This is about your playing not mine. You will be very surprised with your results in the end.

Welcome, come on in and please wipe your feet. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif laugh.gif

Damn, how did I miss this... laugh.gif feet wiped and ready to cook my friend! I'm very pleased to be paired up with you Jeff. smile.gif You have a lot of knowledge to offer and I'm certainly ready to take it all in. I think that this is going to be quite cool! smile.gif

Very cool bro! smile.gif I’m glad you’re pleased. FYI, my dogs chewed your shoes up. ohmy.gif I told you not to leave them up by the kitchen. They get hungry when I'm cooking and thought those were some treats . tongue.gif biggrin.gif laugh.gif

Posted by: skennington Jan 8 2009, 02:35 PM

laugh.gif No worries man, I have several pair...I see the syllabus is up. I'll wait to see what direction you want to take and then discuss. Thought I'd paste it here for easy reference...

Syllabus Guide For the Beginners Mentored Training Program

The following is a guide syllabus for Mentors to follow at the start of their MTP program, the basis of this has been taken from the pilot MTP run by Kris, you can of course add and amend if you wish (by choosing different lessons etc) but the areas to begin working on should be followed as set out below.

(Kris`s MTP pilot can be viewed and used for reference if required http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?automodule=blog&blogid=4&)

Objective/Goals:

The purpose of the Mentor Program is to provide beginner level members (mentoree`s) an opportunity to interact one on one with more experienced members (mentors).
During the program the "mentor" will provide his/her students with advice, on how to progress and improve their current level of playing ability with the use of lessons from the GMC archives.
In the initial stages of the MTP the student should be given a basic grounding on Timing & rhythm, Soloing and Finger exercises, after this period, the mentor can assess areas that require more work and take the program in the appropriate direction.

Homework:

Each week the student will be set an assignment to work on throughout the week and post his/her progress in video format during or at the end of the assignment period, to begin with the weekly plan set out below should be used as a guide before moving into more specific areas.

Weekly Plan

Week 1

Timing & rhythm (Part 1)
-Chords to a backing track

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/beginner-strumming-and-arpeggios/

Goal - To play the whole lesson.

Purpose - practice timing and sense of rhythm. If this lesson gives problems - it will be a useful discovery. Dealing with the problem will help progress to the next level.

instructions
- A Video showing progress should be provided playing with the backing provided (slower backings can of course be used)

Week 2

Timing & Rhythm (Part 2)

A choice of three lessons : http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/smoke-on-the-water-deep-purple/ , http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/blues-groove-library-part-1/ , http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/alice-in-chains-style-lesson/

Goal - To choose one of the suggested lessons and be able to play at least half of the lesson to a backing track (slow or fast backing)

purpose - To build on and develop a solid rhythm and timing foundation.

Instruction - Video showing progress should be provided by the end of the deadline period.

Week 3

Soloing

A choice of three lessons : http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/john-frusciante-lesson/ , http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/slow-pentatonics-lesson/ , http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/tarantella-rock-traditional-folk-dance/

Goal - To play a minimum of 20 seconds with backing of the chosen lesson.

Purpose - To introduce soloing, offering help and advice for the best way to overcome any difficulties that may arise for the student.

instruction - Video showing progress during or by the end of the deadline period.

Week 4

Finger Workouts/Exercise

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/alternate-picking-thirds/

Goal - To play a minimum of one pattern up and down accross all six strings to either a backing or metronome.

Purpose - Alternate picking Introduction and new fingering positions. (Please note that care should be taken with these kind of exercise lessons, they involve finger stretches that a beginner student may not be used to, therefore proper "warm up" should be advised before attempting)

Instruction - To upload a video showing progress by the agreed deadline.

As stated at the start, this is a "guide" syllabus and is not set in stone for what must be used, you can choose other lessons, but to begin with for the beginning weeks these areas should be focused on

Later bro,
Steve

Hey Steve smile.gif I just got home from work and went over the syllabus. Thanks for coping it in here.

I would like you to do the suggested exercise for week one. Please post the video asap. Along with the video I want you to post the name of the chords you played and the notes that make that chord. I'm sure you won't have any problems. The sooner you do this and I am comfortable that you can play these basic chord shapes clean the better. I will probably give you another lesson this week as well I just need a minute to find it. Also if you have a suggestion of another lesson you like that will fit the category let me know.

I'll post again in a while with a few questions and some ideas for use to discuss.

Have fun

Cool man, will do..That friggin F chord still aggravates me so this will be a good lesson. smile.gif I'll get on it!

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 9 2009, 02:40 AM

I have a few questions for you that will help me customize this to fit you. So when you get a chance please think about them and shoot me a reply.

1.) Who are a few of your favorite bands?
2.) If you got up tomorrow and could play anything on the guitar you wanted (songs, guitar solos or licks) what would you play?
3.) What do you think playing wise are your strongest points right now?
4.) What do you think playing wise are your weakest and would like to improve?
5.) What are your playing goals for yourself 3 months from now?
6.) What are your playing goals 6 months from now?
7.) What are your playing goals 1 year from now on your 2year GMC anniversary?

If you have any questions for me please feel free to ask. smile.gif

2.) If you got up tomorrow and could play anything on the guitar you wanted (songs, guitar solos or licks) what would you play? Final Dance, Muris Varajic..The melody line, the technique involved, awesome!
3.) What do you think playing wise are your strongest points right now? Rhythm and power chords
4.) What do you think playing wise are your weakest and would like to improve? Everything else.. laugh.gif
5.) What are your playing goals for yourself 3 months from now? Improve my Alternate Picking, Tapping and Legato
6.) What are your playing goals 6 months from now? To be able to use these skills in my improvisation
7.) What are your playing goals 1 year from now on your 2year GMC anniversary? Simply put, to be better than I am now. smile.gif

Thanks for stopping by Pedja. The MTP is really going to help bring us closer together and make GMC even better than it is now.

Hey Steve,

I am working on your questions but your not playing fair. unsure.gif I only asked you 7 and your asking me 8 ohmy.gif laugh.gif

If you get to upload your lesson tonight that would be great! If your having a problem with the F chord still thats ok. Make a video of the problem your having so I can help.

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 10 2009, 02:14 AM

Ok Steve, here are the answers to your questions sir. Now where is my lesson?? biggrin.gif laugh.gif

How long have you been playing?
Well I started I think at about 13yrs old and played for a few years. Noodled around and tried to teach myself some songs using an old record player my grandmother gave me. We couldn't afford lessons. I could play some AC/DC songs, Heart, 1 or 2 from Rush. Mostly just rhythm stuff. Parents got divorced and I put the guitar down till I was 18. Started playing more serious at that point. I was working and on my own and couldn't pay for lessons either. So I made a bunch of friends that could play and I would just watch and learn from that. Then I would go home and get my tape player out and work on songs. About 8 years later I made a decision to put the guitar down and go to a local college to get an education and a better job. Well that worked out pretty good and now I have a life and a wonderful family that supports me. So a little over 1 year ago I decided I needed to find out how good I could become and then I found GMC. Now you’re stuck with me. biggrin.gif

What's your favorite style..Blues,Rock,Metal...?
Well I really like big hair 80's stuff because that’s what I grew up with. Honestly though I love all types of music and listen to what ever I am in the mood for. Well except rape and disco stuff.

Who do you feel, out of accomplished guitarist, has the best tone?
Tough one. I think all accomplished guitar players half to have a great tone. That’s why we buy their CD's. A few of my favorites are Muris, Satriani, SRV and Eric Johnson, Al Di Meola to name a few.

Also to you, If you could wake up in the morning and play anything, what would it be?
I would just like to wake up and be able to improv or write something like Muris or Satriani.

Your Favorite band/artist?
Mostly guitar centered music. The same artists that I listed above.

What are your goals here at GMC?
Well to help you of course. I need to learn a better variety of technique and some theory stuff so I can put it all together better. I also would like to become more involved with GMC and helping others in some way.

What would you most like to accomplish out of this program?
Honestly if my experiences and playing can make a difference to you or any other player here then I would be happy. The more players the better of course. I just want to be a part of something that involves music. If I can get someone to help me in the process well then that is a bonus.

If you were my personal instructor locally, what would be the one thing you have me do daily so to never forget?
Take a shower and brush your teeth. biggrin.gif tongue.gif

laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif Now that gave me a good laugh man! smile.gif

I'm working on the chords lesson but I just can't believe how I have let the foundation slip by me. This is really the first time I have sat down and focused on a chord structure (that's not power chords). I'm sure I'll have it down by tomorrow, If I can't nail the F barre, I'll just repeat the D or something.

Thanks again for helping me bro! smile.gif

A let me think about that for a minute........ no that is not going to cut it. If your having a problem give me a small video of that section or something and we will work through this. We are not going any further with the syllabus till you get this.

Hi Steve,

I have put a lot of thought into our game plan for the next several weeks. I am listing 3 lessons below and I would like you to either choose one you like or give me a suggestion of something else. If you choose something else I want it to focus on the same areas as these do.

What I feel we need to work on right now are different chord types and phrasings, being able to move around the neck smooth using them, muting technique and we need to free up your right hand from using down strokes so much. If we can focus on these areas it will make you a stronger rhythm player.

Personally I would like to see you tackle Marcus Siepen if you feel up to it.

Marcus Siepen
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/basic-metal-rhythm/

Joe Kataldo
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/beginner-rock-rhythm/

Gabriel Leopardi
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/open-chords-rock-rhythm/

Please give me some feedback and let me know how your progressing with your current lesson.

Posted by: skennington Jan 10 2009, 07:23 PM

Working on the current lesson now and I must say in all it's simplicity, I'm having trouble with it. For all who reads this, DON'T fall into a trap of not practicing regular chords. This is really the first time I have sat down and practiced basic chords and I'm a bit angry at myself for not doing so sooner. mad.gif

These are the basics and should not be taken lightly as I have. I will have a look at those lessons suggested Jeff but to be honest, If all I get out of this program is to catch up on these chord shapes and be able to transition smoothly, I will be completely satisfied. smile.gif

I'll upload a video shortly to show you where I am having trouble... Thanks for your patience with my shortcomings. smile.gif

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 10 2009, 09:24 PM

Well first of all you shouldn’t be mad at yourself. The syllabus was designed for this specific purpose. Now we know that this is something we need to work on lets move on. If it takes you 4 weeks to play this perfect, then that’s what it takes. As long as you’re putting in the effort it’s all good.

This competition for the lack of a better term is not about turning someone into Steve Via in a week. There are many different levels of beginners yet we all start from the same place and have to learn these same basic building blocks. If you ask any guitar player here about the first time they had to learn these cords I bet they would all relate to how difficult and frustrating it was at times. If they say anything else then they are lying to you.

I want you to continue to work on this exercise and please post me an example of you playing ASAP. What I’m going to do is come up with a practice routine for you covering all aspects of the syllabus. I don’t want you getting board and having several lessons to work on will help you become a better player quicker while having more fun.

I am here for one reason and that is to help you. As I have told you before it doesn’t matter to me about winning or losing this. If all this MTP was just about who could make the best player in one month then I would rather lose (or quit) and stay here helping you.

I will get you through this so don’t you quit on yourself. smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Jan 10 2009, 10:27 PM

Thanks for the encouragement man, means a lot bro and I'm glad that you are looking at this the way you are. smile.gif I will honestly will put forth all the effort that my time allows and will get this down for sure. I will get you a video asap so you can point out the good and the bad. I know that without seeing, you are setting their feeling a little helpless but I need to be able to show you the whole lesson and like you said, not just a part of it. smile.gif

I think the entire country did... mad.gif This team is as solid as they come except for one position, quarterback and unfortunately, that's the most important.. laugh.gif You never know what you are going to get with Jake. He's like Jekyll and Hyde and everyone in Charlotte is calling for a change. 6 turnover's, come on....Should have seen his post game press conference, totally lost for words on his performance...And should have been!

Posted by: skennington Jan 12 2009, 11:47 PM

Hey Jeff,

Man I certainly apologize that I have not got anything up for you yet. These chords are actually wearing on me a bit. I want to get this lesson down just so you know that. smile.gif I have been practicing it as much as time allows and if I'm holding my guitar, I'm on this lesson.

I just can't seem to get my fingers to act right.. laugh.gif Like I told you before, good thing I got to this lesson through the MTP program or I probably still would have ignored the basic's. Now, back to working on it.....

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 13 2009, 12:11 AM

That's cool man. I know your working hard. smile.gif Maybe instead of playing with the backing track you can just play the chords in order till you get use to the fingerings. Also if it's just the F chord that is the problem then just work with that change. What is it Dm7 to F or something? I'm not looking at the lesson.

I think it is also a good idea for us to work on other things while still working on this. In my previous post I listed some other rhythm lessons. What do you think about the one by Joe Kataldo? I would like to see you work on this also. You need to mix things up and give yourself a break once in a while. Joe's lesson has a great rock feel and also a small beginer lead.

Posted by: skennington Jan 13 2009, 12:18 AM

Yes, it's a Dm > F > G. I'd be lying if I said the G wasn't aggravating me as well. laugh.gif I'll start working on Joe's lesson as well and mix it up between the two for a while. smile.gif I'm not getting frustrated at all so don't think that, just a bit ticked at myself for not having gone through this before... biggrin.gif

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 13 2009, 12:31 AM

Working on Joe's lesson will get your mind of the other one. When you’re ticked off at yourself it creates tension in your hands and fingers making thing harder and not productive. Trust me on this one. wink.gif I have been there and so has everyone else.

Let me know what you think and how you’re progressing with Joe's lesson. Have some fun with it smile.gif

I'm here when you need me

Posted by: skennington Jan 13 2009, 12:56 AM

Thanks man..I'll check it out here shortly smile.gif

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 15 2009, 12:39 AM

Hey Steve, hows everything going? Just wanted to say hi and see if there is anything I need to do for you at this point. I am also curious, have you had time to check out Joe's lesson and if so what your thoughts are.

Hope all is well smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Jan 15 2009, 02:28 AM

finally getting a little play time tonight.. smile.gif Been working on Joe's lesson for the last hour or so and I like it. I haven't got the solo at the end yet but shouldn't be a problem. I'm uploading a take of the rhythm section now to youtube. Should be up in a minute.

I warn you though, poor light and a monitor mic = BAD quality so I hope you can even see an hear it.. laugh.gif

Here you go man, like I said, very poor render but I think you'll be able to hear it. The light sucks in my spare bedroom..

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 15 2009, 02:45 AM

I will look at it right away smile.gif Just give me a few minutes.

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 15 2009, 03:45 AM

Ok Steve here you go bro. I am going to break this down into 2 basic sections, “Good Points” and “Things I want you to work on”. Cool? cool.gif

First I want to say overall this tack so far is really good and I am very happy with what I see. smile.gif

Good Points:
You can play with rhythm and your timing is good.

I really like how your working on your right hand muting (very good) and getting your right hand moving in an alternate way instead of just down strokes. Great job!

Right hand looks like it is getting more relaxed.

You played the chords clean and I could hear everything (well considering it was YouTube).

Your left hand is moving good and you fingered all the chords without problems. Excellent work! Your fingers should feel like they are behaving more like you want them to now.

Things I want you to work on:
Think about your left hand. Go back and look at your video compared to Joe’s. Your hand looks cramped up like a claw (for the lack of a better term. Please forgive me and just let me try to make my point). Rotate your arm and wrist a little more clockwise or to the right and roll your thumb back under the neck. Let your 2nd and 3rd fingers stretch out like his. This will help you move bar chords quicker, be more comfortable and give you another way to mute string noise when you need to.

You missed playing the full E5 chord also. If you hit this it will give you a bigger sound.

The last note you picked which was a ‘G’ on the 3rd fret of the ‘E’ string was done with your index finger. It should be done with your middle finger. This is very important not just for this jam but for technique in general. Your middle finger was right there so use it. If you had to play a ‘G’ chord there you couldn’t because your fingering isn’t correct and you would trip over your middle finger. I hope that makes some sense. Your kind of reaching over your middle finger with your index finger.

Very good work! We will get to the solo stuff soon so no worries. Right now if you can work on what I am asking you to and get another recording done that would be great. Just like a collab. Then we will add you solo later. Sound good?

EDIT: 2nd comment in the things I want you to work on. E5 chord you missed.

Posted by: skennington Jan 15 2009, 04:18 AM

Thanks Jeff and your absolutely right. wink.gif My left hand does look like a claw.. laugh.gif I'll work on relaxing it a bit and rotating more toward the face of the neck. I actually found that with the "F barre'" in the other lesson that it was much easier. Still haven't quite got it but closer.. smile.gif

I'll keep working and get you another take on this lesson along with the solo..

I'm quite happy as well to see my right hand actually going in a different direction.. laugh.gif Thanks for suggesting Joe's lesson! Not hard, but get's you moving around a little bit and makes you focus on both hands. Exactly what I needed man.. smile.gif

Thanks again bro for your time!

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 15 2009, 04:28 AM

I'm glad you like it (Joe's lesson) biggrin.gif Please check out the edit I made in my post above if you haven't already.

Maybe fixing the claw thing will help with the other lesson as well wink.gif tongue.gif

Cheerio mate! smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Jan 15 2009, 04:53 AM

I noticed your edit after I posted and yes, I did miss that E5 and I knew it.. tongue.gif I'll get it, no worries biggrin.gif Don't bash the claw.. laugh.gif He will find you.. ph34r.gif

BEWARE OF THE CLAW.......

Posted by: skennington Jan 16 2009, 01:40 AM

The claw is back... laugh.gif Here's a little run at the solo of Joe's lesson....

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 16 2009, 02:28 AM

THE CLAW ROCKS!! smile.gif I am very pleased with this for a 1st take. tongue.gif It was in time, sounded good and you looked relaxed. Keep working on this. There are a few small issues that we will address but I am very pleased with your upload and the effort you are putting in Steve.

Your doing great! Very well done!

Posted by: skennington Jan 16 2009, 03:10 AM

Thanks man. smile.gif I spent about 30 minutes or so practicing it before recording the video. I think I know a few of the issues and if you don't mind, I would like to point them out to see if I'm recognizing on my own.. tongue.gif

These are just a few things I noticed and I'm sure you will have more.. laugh.gif I'm going to work on getting you 2 more takes on the rhythm and solo over the weekend which hopefully will be better.
Also, still working on Muris' strumming exercise and hope to have you a take on that one too depending on time. smile.gif

Later bro!

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 17 2009, 12:59 AM

laugh.gif laugh.gif biggrin.gif You got it Steve. Your right wink.gif It's very good that you can point out these things and you are willing to work on them. smile.gif

2 other things I want to point out are:
On the first bend use your 3rd finger and not your 2nd. Also be careful because it isn't a real big bend and you don't want it to be pitchy.

Second thing is really try to add those slides in there that he does to get to some of the notes. Watch the lesson and you'll know what I'm talking about. This will add some SPICE to it.

This weekend I want you to submit all of your final videos for week one. Mirus's lesson, the ryhthm and the solo for Joe's.

Your doing great man smile.gif

Here's the latest on Joe's lesson. The first is the small lead section. I think the bend is still a bit pitchy but look at the right hand, going both way's! Hell yeah! laugh.gif

And here is the rhythm section...Seems to be a bit better.. smile.gif

And now I'm off to strumming.....

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 17 2009, 08:56 PM

Looks good bro! I will wait on comments till you upload your last take of Mirus's lesson. That way everything for week one is together.

Strum away!

Posted by: skennington Jan 18 2009, 08:48 PM

What's up Jeff,

I have here and all it's glory, a take on the Strumming and Arpeggio's lesson. I say you bag the Arpeggios lesson and stick with the Metallica Steve!! laugh.gif laugh.gif You'll get way more chicks! laugh.gif Your guitar is so 80's, I love it man!! biggrin.gif

Sorry for the delay Steve. It’s has been a crazy weekend and my son and I are sharing a bad cold together.

Joe’s Lesson:
You did a great job with this and it’s very cool to see that right hand moving. cool.gif tongue.gif You looked very relaxed. Your left hand looks more comfortable also and you used your 2nd finger to hit the ‘G’ note. Well done man! smile.gif We will fix the bending stuff in solo soon with a different lesson.

Muris Lesson:
It still needs work but I don’t think it is as bad as you think. A week ago was the 1st time you have played these types of chords. Keep working on it. Every week I want you to post your progress with this. I will find you a lesson with full bar chords and that should help you with the dreaded ‘F’ chord problem.

Thanks for your hard work this 1st week. You have made some great progress and I hope you feel the same.

I will post back later with you next assignment. "As I blow my nose."

You know I will and thank you for helping me. smile.gif All we can do is get better as long as we practice! cool.gif

Ok here is the rhythm lesson I would like you to work on for this week.
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/in-the-style-of-black-sabbath/

Once you look at it you will understand why I picked it. It's all full barre chords and moving that shape around. This should help you nail the 'F' in the other lesson.

What do you think?

Posted by: skennington Jan 20 2009, 01:02 AM

Sure man, I'm willing to work on whatever you feel will help me. I trust you bro. smile.gif However, Eb, gonna use my Agile for this one. I need to get more comfortable with it anyway.. smile.gif

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 20 2009, 01:24 AM

Your Agile is more Black Sabbath like anyways. biggrin.gif Will this be enough work for you this week?

Posted by: skennington Jan 20 2009, 01:38 AM

Yes, Yes and oh, did I say yes... tongue.gif Seriously, I want to still keep working hard on the Arpeggio lesson as well, so with the two combined, I think it will take up most of the time that I do have. I also don't want to try and focus on too much at one time and only learn part's of each if that makes since.

What's your thought's, should I push harder?

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 20 2009, 02:12 AM

laugh.gif I thought you may have enough to work on. Just thought I would ask. I was trying to get a feel for how challenging this weeks lesson was going to be for you.

It makes perfect since and I agree smile.gif As long as you have enough work and your posting weekly progress I don't think you need to be concerned with pushing yourself harder. If I felt you weren't putting in an honest effort I would let you know. wink.gif

Let me know if you have questions or get stuck on something.

tongue.gif laugh.gif I love the pants you have on!! smile.gif You get extra credit for that man! cool.gif

Looks like your having fun with this and your Agile (Les Paul copy) looks great bro!

Sounds really good so far but please, I really want you to focus on your left hand with this lesson. I have to give you good advise right smile.gif

Play the FULL bar chords as he shows you please. He uses the 1st, 3rd and 4th finger (pinky) for some of the chords and this is really important bro. Also you need to relax your thumb and allow your 1st finger to lay flat across the neck on the bar chords. Get your elbow off your left leg and sit up straight. That will help. biggrin.gif

What you uploaded sounds almost like the lesson and I am very honored to be your friend and mentor. Thanks man this made my day.

Cheerio

Just for the record...The pants are flannel lounge pants and not some 80's spandex like they look... laugh.gif

I will work on your comments Jeff. I'm still a bit shaky with the lesson so I hope have it tightened up by the weekend. Just wanted to let you know that I'm working. smile.gif

These Pauls are a tone of weight, hence the strap and my posture. So use to the weight of the Jackson that I feel like I'm holding 2 guitars... laugh.gif

Thanks man. I'll be a bit more confident with it as I play it more. Still got figure a part out. If you notice, right where I stop, he goes into a small solo and the rhythm continues. Marcus did not include those guitars in his backing. I want to try and figure that out as well.

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 24 2009, 01:21 AM

Sorry about that Steve. huh.gif I had no idea that was missing from the backing. As you know I don't have access to any of that at this time. sad.gif I appreciate you wanting to put in the extra effort to figure it out. If you need help just ask and I'll figure it out and help. If your going to do all of this maybe we should have 2 seperate uploads for this lesson. One with you recording yourself playing just all the rhythm then another with you just playing the solo over your own backing rhytm track. I'm sure Marcus would send you the backing track so you could mix everything good. What do you think? We could count this a week 2 and 3 combined if you get it all done. Maybe you could have the next week off and do whatever you want. We can work something out. smile.gif

--------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------3--4--3--4--6--4--3--2----
----1--3--4--3--4--6--4--3--4--3-----------------------------

Just wanted to check in and see how things where coming along. We got 6 inches of snow over night so I stayed home with my son today. Did you get your issue with video 6 figured out? When do you thinks you will be uploading this weeks lesson?

Posted by: skennington Jan 27 2009, 05:53 PM

Snow day, lucky you...We can't get snow down this way for nothing. Not anything measurable anyway.
I think I've got that section worked out. I'll try to get the vid uploaded tonight or tomorrow night. Tbh, my time practicing has been cut into a bit. My wife is having to pull longer hours due to layoff's with her company. I'm still practicing everynight but with my kid's needing attention, it's just not quality time.

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 28 2009, 03:09 AM

Yeah tough times for everyone right now with jobs and stuff. It's good news that she wasn't one of the ones layed off.

Do what you can and enjoy some time with your kids. They grow up so quick.

A forgot to ask if Marcus sent you the backing track for this lesson? ohmy.gif

Posted by: skennington Jan 28 2009, 04:18 AM

Man, just now getting to my guitar tonight, so a take is pretty unlikely.. sad.gif Thanks for your encouragement Jeff and yes, she is lucky. She has been with Verizon Wireless for 14 years and I'm glad seniority still means something. smile.gif It don't help my efforts with practice time, but I'm very grateful though for what we do have have considering the times.

As far as the backing, Marcus was having issues with his Pro Tools, said if he could get them worked out, he would send it to me. He also said it would be fine for me to use, so I have acquired it, just not with the second guitar, which I'm going to try and work out myself. blink.gif May need you to help on this bro.. tongue.gif

I'm still working on the strumming and arpeggios which I will nail before this thing ends, at tempo! cool.gif

So, off to utilize my little bit of time that I do have before my eyelids get too heavy... laugh.gif

Good Points:
He has a better hair cut than you
Has the Rock Star attitude for sure
Great right hand alternate picking ideas for such a young age
He has a great smile and looks alot like his father

Things to work on:
Play without Dad holding that big heavy guitar
Use the pickup switch to get a variation in tones
Do some pick scraps every once in a while because they sound good and look really cool

You crack me up man smile.gif

Here you go man, took YT forever to procees and it's a small file... Just a few word's, I know you really want to see me fretting the chords differently but the problem I'm having is this. If you watch Marcus when he goes into the sort of gallop, he is fretting the low E at the third fret with his thumb. I just can't seem to transition doing it like that. So, it has kind of got me fretting all of the chords the way I am.

Also, I know the lesson up through the harmonics part but lost it before I got there and was running out of time. Anyway, here's what I have...

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 29 2009, 04:10 AM

Steve, thanks for your upload wink.gif

Over all it sounds really great. smile.gif There are a few things I would like you to think about with your fingering which we will get to tomorrow. I know what you mean about the chords with the thumb and that is OK for now. But if you can get the main full bar chords correct that should be your goal. Solo stuff I am happy with so far. You have a really good sence of rhythm and placement which is one thing most beginners seem to struggle with.

Thanks for the upload. Your doing really well cool.gif

Hi Steve,

I wanted to give you a few extra comments on you upload. As I said before over all I think for the time you have to put in it’s good. My goal with these first few weeks was to introduce some new ideas and to correct some bad habits. This is what I am going to base these comments on.

You aren’t even trying to do the chords correct and you know that. I even expressed when I gave you this lesson as well as with your first upload that this was the reason for me choosing it and why. I am not sure why you are refusing to even try.

Go back and look at your video again. We are trying to also correct some things with your right hand, right? Things looked great till you came out of the chords at 0:44 seconds. Your picking went to mostly down strokes, your left hand went out of sync and everything started to fall apart with your timing. That is the reason we need to correct this now. You’re going to have a really hard time becoming an intermediate player with just all down strokes.

I realize you are trying to make things sound cool. But when it comes to us learning and for me to be able to hear what your playing properly I would appreciate less effects on your uploads. Look at Emirs current collab “Rock Ballad” and how he talks about the tone of the guitar. Sometimes less is more when you record your tracks. I am not saying it sounds bad, but it makes it difficult to accurately hear what your playing and harder to give you good advise.

We are in our final week bro! I hope you can work on these corrections and have made some progress with Muris’s lesson as well. I would like to see an upload on them when you can.

Thanks for the upload and I hope you will find these comment helpful smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Jan 30 2009, 02:53 PM

Thanks man for your honest opinion. Means a lot. smile.gif I will upload a new take with less effects so you can hear the notes better. Trust me, I am working on trying to break the picking habit for sure. It's just so easy while in the moment to revert back to all down stroke's. I'm thinking in my mind, "up down up down" but my hand seems to have a mind of it's own sometimes. Maybe you could suggest an exercise at a slower tempo to help me work on this.

As far as the chords go, I'm a bit confused on what you are saying here. These shapes look to me like regular power chords. I'm playing them barred with ring finger only because the thumb think is throwing me off. Are you saying I should still be using ring and pinky for the 2nd and third notes of the shape?

Thanks for understanding my points. smile.gif I know your trying really hard to break this habit and I will find you an exercise to work on. I am not talking about the chords with the thumb so lets just forget about those for right now. You are just playing all standard 2 finger power chords for everything (1st and 4th finger). Go back and look at the main video. At point 0:15 he uses 3 finger bard chord (1st, 3rd and 4th finger). Also at 0:28. That shape is what I am talking about. It is the same shape as the F chord (minus the second finger because that makes it a major) from Mirus's lesson. I just want your hand to get use to that shape and moving it around. Hope that helps clear that up. smile.gif

laugh.gif It took me a minute because this tab looks weird. Lets take the 1st line of notes running vertical. You have the 'E' 'A' 'D' strings. The notes for the chord are 4th fret on 'E' string (use 1st finger), 6th fret on the 'A' string (use your ring finger) and 6th fret on the 'D' string (use your pinky or 4th finger).

Does that help at all? I really need a web cam and am going to buy one (with my tax return).

What you are playing in your video doesn't sound wrong and to play it that way (barring the 2 notes with your pinky) isn't a good technic. I wanted you to use the fingering I pointed out above because you are getting ready to fall into another bad habit. Marcus made the lesson and is playing this fingering for a reason. I am not making this up or trying to change his lesson in any way. Just try it and trust me bro. cool.gif smile.gif

Another take on the S&A. Still st 50bpm and don't sound much better with limited practice but it feels better. smile.gif I actually came close to hitting the 2nd F# laugh.gif Gonna work more on it tonight when my wife gets home from work. Sorry, I noticed my left hand is a bit out of the screen.. sad.gif

Posted by: UncleSkillet Feb 1 2009, 02:41 AM

Yeah man!!!! You have made some great progress with this since your last upload. Go back and look at it.

Sounds good (clean) and you look more comfortable with the chords. You didn't get the 'F' chord the first time but you nailed it on the second one with the up stokes. Well done! smile.gif biggrin.gif You used the correct fingering for it also (you got the pinky down).

Stay at 50bpm. You just about got it. When you can play it smoother everything will just click on like a light bulb and you will be at 100bpm before you know it. wink.gif

This is great!

Posted by: skennington Feb 1 2009, 03:12 AM

WOW, thanks man.. smile.gif I don't hear the progress, but feel it in my hands if that makes sense. I'll go back and have a look at the first upload. My muscle memory in my fingers seem to be getting better which I'm thrilled about. cool.gif

I'll try and post another take of this one and the BS lesson tomorrow.

Thanks again for your encouragement Jeff, I know it don't show, but I have really taken a lot in since we started this! smile.gif

I can see that. This is going to make a big difference in your playing. I am very excited also smile.gif

Get your uploads in before the big game wink.gif and you better not be routing for Pittsburgh. laugh.gif

laugh.gif It's a coin toss for me. On one hand, Kurt Warner is such a stand up athlete and Arizona has defeated the odds to this point, on the other, the Steelers just have that will to win and Troy Polamolu is outstanding! We'll see...

Hey man,

Got a couple of vid's for you to watch at half time. The first is another take on Marcus' lesson. It 's a bit sloppy but I tried to focus on fretting the way you want me to and also alternate picking. I also backed off the effects a bit too.. tongue.gif I aslso went down to 130bpm to help me get more comfortable fretting this way. I feel the bad habit starting to release itself from me. smile.gif

The second is another take on the S&A lesson by Murris. Still not perfect and some dead notes in their but I feel it's getting better. smile.gif

First half of the BS Lesson by Marcus Siepen

S&A by Muris Varajic @ 50bpm

Posted by: UncleSkillet Feb 2 2009, 09:10 PM

Steve, I have to tell you that these takes look really good. The BS lesson has a few timing issues and that’s really it. This could be fixed by just practicing the lesson more, but I think we have gotten what we need out of it and it is time to move on.

Same thing with the second take on Muris's lesson. You just need to practice it some more and you will get to 100bpm before you know it.

I think you have made some great progress in the short time we have been working together. Here is how I would like us to move forward. Lets keep working with Muris's lesson and add two more exercises. This is going to give you I well round practice routine. I am figuring that maybe you have 1 hour a day to practice so lets break it down like this.

15 minutes with http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/pop-strumming/ This will be a good warm up for your right hand.

15 minutes with Muris's lesson

30 minutes with http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/little-finger-work-out/ This will get your fingers moving and build strength. Also you'll notice it's all alternate picking and will help to get your hands working together. Start slow and learn a small section first. Once you memorized the pattern he is using then add another section and so on. The goal is to learn the lesson and be able to play it comfortable at 60bpm.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Edit: typo

Posted by: skennington Feb 2 2009, 09:47 PM

Thanks man, just had a look at the lessons and like your recommendations. I'll get started on the practice schedule tonight. smile.gif

Posted by: UncleSkillet Feb 4 2009, 02:51 AM

Hey man, how is the new pratice schedule working out? Is the 1 hour a day routine going to work out for you? I hope your enjoying it. smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Feb 4 2009, 03:02 AM

Working great man! Started with it last night and getting ready to jump into it tonight here in the next 30 min or so. Getting a bit of a late start tonight. I feel a bit more structured with this routine so thanks for your suggestion bro. I have always just practiced randomly and never set time limits on anything.

Last night was really the first time practice truly felt productive. Once I have the other two lessons memorized, I'm sure it will feel even better! smile.gif

I've noticed too, anytime I pick up my guitar and start playing anything, my right hand is moving up AND down! For me, big accomplishment bro and I owe your guidance to that! smile.gif

How would you like for me to post progress on Dejan's lesson? All of the routine, or just the goal at hand?

Posted by: UncleSkillet Feb 4 2009, 03:26 AM

I'm glad you like it man! smile.gif I thought breaking things up into time slots would help, especially with the kids. This way you can play, take a break if you need and continue. If we just stick to a schedule like this and change lesson's as we go you will really see some progress. tongue.gif

When you get time I would really like to see an upload for each. If you don't know the 2 new lessons all the way through just give me a teaser. I really want to see your right hand moving biggrin.gif Maybe instead of playing it one time through and stopping you could do it 2 or 3 times before stopping the video.

You seem more excited about your playing and that makes me feel very good smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Feb 4 2009, 05:12 AM

No prob's Jeff, will do man! smile.gif Yes, exited!!! biggrin.gif

Posted by: skennington Feb 7 2009, 04:55 AM

Jeff,

Tried something a little different tonight. Sorry no vid man but I want you to have a listen if you would.
I started with a simple Chord progression from chords out of the S&A lesson. Am, C and Em, then I used the same strumming pattern form Joe's Pop lesson but at a slower tempo and tried to follow the progression with a solo.. laugh.gif

Have a listen and tell me how bad it is. I played this all by ear with no metronome so may be a bit out of time but anyhow...

I'll have a video up for you tomorrow on the other stuff.

Cheers man
Steve

I can really hear your right hand moving UP and DOWN. Very good!

Where is little 'Hunters' track? I haven't heared from him for a while!

How is his progress? Please tell him to upload soon and I think he is doing great. smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Feb 7 2009, 05:49 AM

Thanks man, and yes, as Mr Miyagi would say, Show me paint the fence.. UUUpppp...Dooownn.. laugh.gif

As far as Hunter,we might just have to slip one in of him tomorrow as well. biggrin.gif He's starting to like the keyboard a bit as well. He already thinks he's better than me, which might be true.. laugh.gif

Posted by: skennington Feb 8 2009, 03:33 AM

Another update on the S&A lesson. Recorded earlier today and thought I would get a take in on Dejan's lesson but the Bud Shootout is on ..You know us Southerners... laugh.gif Still at 50bpm but have been practicing it at 75 as you will see..lol

Posted by: UncleSkillet Feb 8 2009, 04:54 AM

Yeah I was watching the race to. The track seemed ruff and the cars were bouncing all over the place. I hate when they end the race because of a wreck.

Hey about your upload, one thing I noticed was this. You’re not painting fence UP and DOWN. On the first part it’s all DOWN strokes and you end on an UP stroke for each chord. On the second part it’s all UP strokes and you end on a down stroke for each chord. Think of it more like a slow sweep. Just let the pick glide UP or DOWN the strings depending on which part you are playing. Then you won’t have to watch your right hand while you pick. This should make it easier for you to focus on the left hand chords and fingering. The ‘F’ chord got worse on this one.

How are the other exercises coming along?

Posted by: skennington Feb 8 2009, 05:20 AM

So you want me to paint the fence on this one... laugh.gif That's going to present some issues for sure but I will overcome..Muris plays the lesson this way, but if you want, I will go to all AP. And yes, I was worse on the #&$*(%(*& "F" Chord.. It's the I suck button... unsure.gif

As far as the others go, I have mainly been focusing on Dejan's lesson this week and using Joe's lesson as a warm up as you recommended. I will say, my left hand hurt's from that exercise even at low speed. I started with it this morning then backed off to get a bit of rest.

Still after it though, 60bpm is the goal!

Paint the fence doesn't mean Alt-picking. Please read my post again. I want you to glide (sweep) UP or DOWN after you play the chord. If you strum DOWN in the first part then pick all the notes of the chord DOWN and for the second part all UP. If this doesn't make sence then let me know and I will call you tomorrow and explain it better. We're about due for a phone call anyway. smile.gif

Understand now man. I thought you may want me to try a different picking pattern with this lesson. And yes, a call is overdue. I'll try and give you a ring this evening. smile.gif Still got the critter problem...

Hey bro,

Sorry I have not been around much these last couple of days. I enjoyed our talk we had btw. smile.gif A lot has happened at work since that talk. I have not had much "quality" time with my guitar either. I managed to get a quick take of the S&A lesson last night and I must say, to me, it's not much better. sad.gif Still practicing it though and if I get a chance tonight, I'll record a vid of the first part of Dijan's lesson. I'll talk to you more about the situation. Still have a job though, so I guess I should be thankful. smile.gif

Posted by: UncleSkillet Feb 13 2009, 04:19 AM

I enjoyed our talk time to man! smile.gif

Sorry about whatever is going on at your job. ohmy.gif You and I (and a lot of others in the USA) are going through all this company restructure crap right now. Expenses are increasing and the amount of pay or appreciation is decreasing.

I don't get as much playing time as I would like either as you know. Once a week for a few hours really sucks! You also know what’s going on in my personnel life. But instead of getting frustrated I try and channel that energy and I really look forward to my time playing. When I close the door and it is my time to practice that's it! No one bothers me and I let my emotions poor out. However I feel at the moment I just go with it. This really helps me deal with things. I eventually forget about other things, the real me begins to come out and I start to feel better. Maybe this can help you also.

Thanks for the upload BTW bro. I think it was a lot better than the last one. wink.gif Your aware of the mistakes you made so there isn't a reason for me to point them out. I will say this though, you looked pretty comfortable playing at that tempo. There weren't any huge mistakes and trust me when I tell you the little ones (muted notes, etc..) will be gone some. I know practicing this lesson is getting old but it is very important that you accomplish this.

I'll call you this weekend if you want to chat. I have 3 - 4 collabs to work on and upload so I will be around if you need me smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Feb 18 2009, 02:49 AM

Hey man, I wanted to throw something up so you could see my hand movement on Dijan's lesson and get some feedback. I was running out of time and every time I hit the "button" I screwed up so I just rolled on with the first 4 positions of the lesson.

Actually got some good quality this time! laugh.gif

Posted by: UncleSkillet Feb 18 2009, 02:53 AM

Ahh! Very cool and thanks. I will look it over here in the next few minutes and comment for you. I hope the drum track thing worked out.

Drum's...Hadn't had time to mess with it to be honest... laugh.gif Son seems to be getting worse so might be away for the next little bit. I know It's not a lot to go on for offering advice but wanted to get something put up to show you. Feel free to pass on the comments... tongue.gif

Posted by: UncleSkillet Feb 18 2009, 03:12 AM

No problem man. I could tell by watching that there where other things on your mind and that's cool.

I hope your son starts feeling better bro. Get out the Lysal spray you don't want to get it.

I've watched it twice and I think like we talked about a metrenome or basic drum beat would really help. This would give you something to focus on while playing.

All-in-All I am very happy with seeing your AP (right hand) and fingering with the left hand bro! It put a smile on my face to see things getting connected together. I can tell you have been working hard.

Posted by: skennington Feb 18 2009, 05:26 AM

Thanks for being easy on me man... rolleyes.gif Yeah, you know a lot is going on but that's life and we just have to push on. I'll get a vid up with a beat so you can evaluate my timing a bit more. smile.gif Have a good evening bro!

Cheerio's smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Mar 1 2009, 03:08 AM

What up Jeff, got my rig back together today and recorded the first part of the pinky w/o. This time I added a simple drum track @ 60 bpm. Still a bit sloppy but I'm going to be working hard on this the next few days.

Posted by: UncleSkillet Mar 1 2009, 06:14 PM

Nascar qualifying in the background. Why does this not surprise me. rolleyes.gif laugh.gif

Way to go Steve! @60 bpm, which is our goal. I think working with the drumbeat is really helping. Looks like you are getting good control of your fingers and from what I could see of your right hand, it also looked all right.

Now we just need to put the whole lesson together @60bpm and were good to go. Once you can do this we will move on to something more musical so you can apply what you have learned so far. wink.gif

Only suggestion would be dial back the reverb and the treble some to get a warmer tone.

How are the chords coming along (Muris’s lesson)? Are they getting easier?

Posted by: UncleSkillet Mar 3 2009, 01:31 AM

Hey Steve, I have been looking back over your progress since we started and doing some thinking. You have worked really hard and I hope you feel like all of your pratice time has paid off. We had to work on a lot of the basics which sometimes isn't really all that fun.

I think you are ready for this lesson.
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/Bb-minor-phrasing-beginner/

This is your first solo lesson and I know you will do a fine job with it. I want you to focus on mainly this one lesson and the Chords one from Mirus. You still need to show me you can play the chords bro and I won't cut you any slack with that. You wouldn't want me to anyway, right? smile.gif

Cool with you? cool.gif

Posted by: skennington Mar 3 2009, 04:21 AM

Chords are getting easier Jeff, and know I would not want you to let me off the hook on this lesson. I need it! smile.gif I'm still practicing it and will add this new lesson of Muris' as well. smile.gif

I'll also dial the verb and treble back a bit on my tone.

I'll get some vid's up of my progress with the Chords, Pinky workout (hopefully a bit further through), and something on the new lesson in the next couple of days. Hou'd that be?

I just knew you were going to say something about the TV in the background laugh.gif It was muted btw... tongue.gif smile.gif

Check this little vid out of my kid's playing in the snow...Through some of my old creations behind it. Forgive me for the quality, it was taken with a photo cam...Man, it's nice to have power again, you just don't know what ya got til it's gone. Wait, did Cinderella say something along those lines in ths 80's? laugh.gif

You can work on what you like man but like I said above I am just wanting you to really focus on the Bb minor phrasing and the Chords lesson. It is fine if you want to give the pinky lesson a break. I would almost prefer you do for now. It has got your right and left hand working together. Now we should apply what we have learned and keep progressing. When I first started working with you you would have probably had a really hard time playing this Bb minor solo lesson because of your picking. Now you will be able to shred this! smile.gif

EDIT: I will look at the video when I get home from work.

Posted by: skennington Mar 3 2009, 10:50 PM

Cool man! Got a play to go to this evening that my daughter is in but I'll start on the new lesson right after! smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Mar 8 2009, 02:00 AM

Level 3... phew... laugh.gif Just an update man, working on the lesson. smile.gif I think this one might just break me into sweeps! smile.gif

Posted by: UncleSkillet Mar 8 2009, 03:15 AM

You can do it man! wink.gif smile.gif

It would probably help if you practiced each video lick with a kaz-box. I know it has helped me with the mixolydian lesson I'm working on quite a bit.

Here is a link for you, check it out!
http://www.reztronics.com/prod01.htm

By the way, I still need you to play the chords and paint the fence biggrin.gif laugh.gif

Posted by: skennington Mar 8 2009, 04:05 AM

I'll get it man, no worries... smile.gif I like the link too. I'm actually just working on it along with Muris in each vid along with the backing. May be why it takes me a while but once I have it that way, the only thing to do is overcome the "record button".. laugh.gif

And still painting the fence too.... laugh.gif

Posted by: skennington Mar 10 2009, 01:00 AM

Hey man, quick update on the Bb lesson. will you take a look at the vid and see if you can find some things that will help me get a better sweep pattern down. I know the lesson but can't get through it. Maybe more time and practice is all I need. smile.gif I love the lesson btw and think that once I master it, the technique will take me far with my playing. Thanks man for recommending this one!

I hope you don't mind me jumping onto your thread!! But I watched your video, and your sweeping is coming along nice, if I were to give you some advice, of course take it with a grain of salt, really concentrate on your right hand and making sure you're not picking each string individually when you do the sweep, but more like a raking motion, where the pick falls from string to string in one movement, if you get that down you're gonna nail this lesson! wink.gif

Posted by: skennington Mar 10 2009, 02:55 PM

No man, not at all and thanks for the advice. I do feel that once mastered, floating the pick across the strings is one of things that will set me "sweep free" laugh.gif I think with time it will come as my practice time has been quite limited lately, bout an hour or so every other night.

What do you think Jeff?

Posted by: UncleSkillet Mar 11 2009, 12:55 AM

Sorry Steve, I have had some issues with my PC (sound and video not playing correct at all, etc..).

I seemed to have got things working now.

@Amol thanks for jumping in and helping with your comments. smile.gif

Steve he is right! Most of your problems seem to be caused by you right hand. I am going to upload you a video response soon. I can explain things better that way rather than typing a bunch of text.

I'll PM you when it has been uploaded.

Posted by: skennington Mar 11 2009, 03:59 AM

Video Comments: Picking technique

Posted by: skennington Mar 12 2009, 03:49 AM

Man, this is great, I really like the video approach. I will watch it several times and digest what you are saying. I picked my guitar up when you were explaining the closed hand picking and tbh, it didn't feel all that bad. I have often wondered how David Walliman picks the way he does and still sound amazing.

Uploads will come soon! Thanks man. smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Mar 13 2009, 01:22 AM

Jeff,

Thanks again for your upload and I think your right. Having my hand closed seems to be helping a bit. I recorded a quick take at a different angle so you could better see what is going on. I bummed a note or two and was anxious at the beginning but anyhow, have a look and see what you think.

Posted by: UncleSkillet Mar 13 2009, 02:39 AM

HELL YES!!! cool.gif

You got me all excited and then stopped playing. sad.gif Pick a slower backing track (about 5 - 10bpm) and practice at that speed. Even though you did the sweep part really nice it still felt a little rushed. Playing slower will really help you get things in sync and smoother.

Hurry up and do another take now! I want more you lesson tease. laugh.gif laugh.gif tongue.gif

Posted by: skennington Mar 13 2009, 03:15 AM

biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif smile.gif Glad to hear that Jeff. I will start practicing it with a slower backing and then post a new take of the whole lesson. Thanks for all the advice man, means a lot!

Just checking in Jeff. I'm sure you are aware that a lot is going on atm with the REC program so been a bit busy with that. Also I have a new member of the family. A 12 week old Golden Retriever named Sammy.. laugh.gif Had a few sleepless nights this past week.

All in all, I feel like I'm still where I was at on the lessons from the previous uploads. Going to try and get some quality practice time in this weekend to get a little further down the road. Hope all is well on your end man! smile.gif

Cheers,
Steve

Hit the button and still couldn't play it clean and this one is at 55 bpm. So still a few plub's but I'm getting close to full speed at 72 bpm smile.gif

Posted by: UncleSkillet Apr 5 2009, 02:18 AM

Steve this is great man!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You rhythm / timing is right on. You played it very clean and it sounds great. You had the mess up at the end but I can tell it was the cameras fault and not yours. You should be very proud of yourself.

Practice it like this at 55 and work on a wider vibrato for a few of the longer notes. I see a REC upload in your future. wink.gif

This made my night. smile.gif Great work!!

EDIT: I like your new pratice room.

Posted by: skennington Apr 5 2009, 05:31 PM

Thanks man. smile.gif I'll work on the wider vibrato too. The practice room is still the same, just turned my desk around so you don't see all the clutter.. tongue.gif laugh.gif

Later,
Steve

Hi Steve,

Hope things are well and you had a good Easter with your family! My favorites are the Chocolate / Peanut butter eggs. tongue.gif tongue.gif biggrin.gif laugh.gif

Let me know if you need anything, even a chat!

I'm here for you smile.gif

BTW,

I looked at your last video again and have noticed something. In the part around 0.27 sec I notice you are having problems with your UP sweep picking from the small 'E' string up to the BIG 'E'. We need to learn how to paint the fence down (which you do really good) as well as UP (not so good because you go back to all down picking). Take a closer look and tell me if I'm wrong. Your AP is starting to look really nice, I like that!

What do you think? We can fix this real quick, no problem.

Let me know smile.gif

Yes, you are right here my friend. With the slower tempo, it had me wanting to pick the notes rather than sweeping over them. I have been practicing it at full speed and think I may have it cleaned up in a few days. I alsoo have been playing around withh different posture positions, different chair, foot stool, that sort of thing. It's funny how sometimes minor things like this can change everything. Even standing and playing, different world there... laugh.gif

Posted by: skennington Apr 25 2009, 11:00 PM

what up man, been a while hasn't it. tongue.gif Had a little time today so I recorded a take on Muris' lesson at full speed. New used guitar I picked up really cheap and still working some bug's out of it. You'll notice I have yet to get the intonation exact on the B string but it's not real bad.

Anyway, have a look see and if you would agree to move on, I have a lesson I'm cmomping at the bit to get to. Hope all is well up your way..HOT down here! 89 degrees today.. Think I'll throw it up on the REC board as well.. unsure.gif

Posted by: UncleSkillet Apr 26 2009, 05:37 AM

Steve, you should be very proud of this! Your take is really good and I'm glad you uploaded to the REC

Fix the tuning with the 'B' string and you should have a winner!

We are going to move on my friend so don't you worry!

Well Done!! biggrin.gif tongue.gif smile.gif

EDIT: Nice new guitar bro!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like the reverse headstock!

Might be a bit over my head but I love this lesson by Ivan M.

Hey man, been awhile and I'm sorry. The REC has taken up a bit of my time on the site but just so you know, I have been practicing when I can. smile.gif

I need your help on how to work out this tricky part in http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/atmospheric_ballad_solo_in_g_minor/. It's video #4. It's quadruplets on 32nd note values with all picking. I can almost get it legato style but that's not how he plays it. Strict AP and you most flow with the backing to get the feel right. Any advice on how to work this part out?

I've got the rest of the lesson almost down. smile.gif

Later man,
Steve

Nice to hear from you Steve. smile.gif I will look at it and see what I can help you with.

It might help if you upload a take of the section so I can better understand what you might be having troubles with.

Just got home tonight so I will look at thing in the morning, ok smile.gif

PS: Know problem bro! Just watched the lesson and we can get this worked out with know problem. Just upload a take of this section for me OK so I can see what I think I'm hearing.

Will get something up for you to see as soon as I can Jeff. You know how warm weather and kids go, they want to be outside all the time. Bought something for the family to enjoy this summer... biggrin.gif

Did you go on the "Price is Right" or something? I'm sure your family is enjoying this! cool.gif Are you doing any water skiing?

Congrats man! smile.gif

I'm not sure what your having problems with or how to help so upload something when you get time. It doesn't have to be a big production. Just an mp3 or short video of that section so I can get an idea of what's going on.

Cheerio Captain! laugh.gif

As I said in your uploads thread, been playing around with a piano backing as well Jeff. Nice work Steve! smile.gif It has structure and you worked out different phrasings of your melody line. Watch all the long notes though. If you’re going to use them it would help to use some vibrato.

Playing along with different instruments is fun and it can create some nice fresh ideas. I've been trying to find a cool backing with saxophone to jam with.

Posted by: skennington Jun 29 2009, 01:01 AM

Thanks Jeff, the structure and development was what I was most after. Still a long ways away but as I add technique and further knowledge of notes, I think I will get better. smile.gif Just not enough time now a days...Wish I would have started this adventure 25 years ago... laugh.gif

Sounds good man! smile.gif
There are a few things I would suggest and this could just be my taste maybe.

1.) Think about the structure of it. You have a beginning (good), Middle going into the change fits also, but the end isn't really clear. The story doesn't end or resolve. Just something to think about.

2.) In the middle part it would be nice if you could work in the Blues note some. You are just playing straight pentatonic the whole time and adding a lick with that note will give it more color and sound more bluesy.

I will upload my progress a little later for you to comment on.

Skillet

Posted by: skennington Jul 3 2009, 06:25 PM

Thanks for the comments Jeff. smile.gif I'll work a bit more on it and see if I can add some color. Looking forward to hearing what you have so far!

Posted by: skennington Jul 4 2009, 12:36 AM

Check out this take Jeff. I think it adds a bit of color and sounds a little more bluesy. I still have to work on the ending, not happy with it.

OK Steve, so here you go. I usually wouldn't ever post such a ruff take but for you I'll make an exception. smile.gif
I figured I'd try and make this some what of a learning thing for the both of use. cool.gif

Here is where I'm at. First thing I do with a collab is find a tone that fits the mood of what I'm going for. Then I just play slowly through it to get a feal for where I want to be on the neck and what notes to finish on. This is far from a finished product.

Comment away biggrin.gif

I'm diggin it man! smile.gif Love the note choice and the pre-bends definitely add some flavor. I can see how landing on the right note in each passage sets the stage for the next. I'll take what I can from it bro, thanks and keep updating.

Haha... I didn't even see that ohmy.gif . What kind of mentor am I anyway? laugh.gif tongue.gif

This one has much more color to it don't you think? I like what you where trying to go for at the end so keep working on that part.

Only other thought I had was to try and finish each phrase (lick) and stop! Don't let all the long notes ring some much. Think of the question and answer technique. Ask a question (STOP) and then answer (STOP).

Great progress! smile.gif

Wow! Great improvement!
I really like this take for you Steve. smile.gif
Adding the pauses between the begining licks worked out great imho. Structure in good you have a begining, middle and the end where you through in the thrill was great. I don't think there is much I would change. If you decide to do another take my only other suggestion would be to try a little less gain (sounds kind of to heavy metal for my taste but cool at the same time) and the vibrato could be smoother.

I think Ivan will have some nice things to say when you upload your take. wink.gif

Playing it 2 and 2 really creates a different feal. Still sounds really good but maybe it could have a little more spice. Becuase the breaks are long you need more going on when you play the licks imho. So faster more melodic riffs would sound better to me.

Still it's another great take and I hope your learning alot from this smile.gif

Try another one if you have time and mix it up. Let your fealing go! 1 and 1, 2 and 2 or what ever you think. Switch it up within the same take but be consistent ok. wink.gif cool.gif

I feel the same way man. This is definitely a different approach and I am learning from it. smile.gif I plan on another take with as you said, faster sections. It's just hard to think and fit those in to two bars. I think Pedja wants it consistent so if I go 3 bars, there's a long wait so the playing better be catchy! laugh.gif

It's got to be catchy for sure. wink.gif

I really like the begining of your first take so maybe keep that cause it sounds very cool where you come in on the beat and pick back up after the rest. After that do a mix of your second take and first (as far as licks and breaks go).

You got it Steve so trust yourself. Create a combo from both of your takes and it will be amazing! smile.gif

What's up Jeff? Been a bit hectic for me this weekend, had a lot going on but I managed to get some time in on the strings this afternoon. smile.gif I been wanting to get into this lesson by Ivan Zecic so I jumped right on it. To my surprise, I picked up on it fairly quick. Still need to sharpen the vibrato and clean up a few rhythmic details. I couldn't help myself but to through together a quick low quality vid for ya.. biggrin.gif ...

OK, lets go with this. It goes along with the comments you got with your last REC upload.

So since we're jamming in drop you are going to use you Les Paul, right?

This lesson is really going to help tighten up your rhythm (timing). Look at your last video upload (for the REC). You would look back and forth at your right and left hand and you were not as comfortable as you should be with your hands. Trust yourself and if you are going to look at something then just make it your left hand. Never look at what you right hand is doing with this lessons upload. Also pay attention to the vibrato, ok. smile.gif

I'm happy to give more comments on uploads. The dog sitter backed out so I will be home on vacation this week while my family is gone. Got to work on my own playing issues so holler back if you need me.

Your doing great Steve smile.gif

PS: I like this format better. You pick the things you feel you would like to work on (lessons) and I'll help to keep you on track with your own style and development.

Also pay attention to the vibrato, ok. smile.gif

I like it too man! smile.gif Unfortunately, can't use the LP, sold it a while back. Just didn't like the way the fret's felt on the 2000 model. They are machined. On the 3000's and up, they are hand ground. I've dropped my tiger stripe down.. cool.gif

I'm tone searching atm and wanted to see what your thoughts were on this tone....

Sounds pretty close to me. Hard to tell without hearing it blend with the backing. Watch the Bass. If I had to make a guess about any adjustments it would be to back the bass off some and raise the mids up a little. That would give you a clearer, punchier crunch that might blend better imo. smile.gif

Thanks for asking me to comment Jeff. smile.gif

Overall, your playing is tight but the thing that stood at to me the most was vibrato was not clear in some spots. I don't think that it was you, I think it was more the tone. Don't get me wrong, I like it, I just think it needs a little more work with EQ to get it more defined so you can hear everything more clearly.

Do this for me, open your FX chain on the lead track. Select ReaEQ (cockos) for EQ setting. Then click the "preset setting" and try each of them. I personally like the "wide female vocal" setting. I also like the "mud free" setting for some tracks. I think you can make this tone a bit better, ( it's already good ) but play around some more with it. The mid's seem to be a little high for my liking but your always telling me to add more... tongue.gif

Try some of the settings I mentioned and find one you like then duplicate the track and pan...You know the drill. wink.gif I would even add a third and center it and see how fat it sounds.

I have backed off of bumping a track to get a stereo field and started using Loser/stereo enhancer and adjusting the width to my liking. Seems to sound a bit better to my ears after the render process.

I love what you have so far man and can't wait to hear the final! smile.gif

Hey thanks Steve. I thought you would have went for the 3rd track because that is where I cut more Mid's out.

'Clicks and Saves' smile.gif

We'll see how thing go with the final upload. cool.gif

You should try working with just the beginning of the song. It is a great exercise and will teach you vibrato control and feel. Thinks about it! smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Jul 25 2009, 03:47 AM

Just goes to show it really does matter what you are listening through. After I got home tonight, I listened to all 3 again through my studio headphones and monitors. Listening through my headphones (Samson CH70), I preferred the 3rd take, through my monitors (KRK RP5's) I liked the 2nd better. unsure.gif

Before I post a final take, I usually find a happy medium between the two and hope everyone enjoys. smile.gif Not always the case.. sad.gif laugh.gif

I struggle with the same thing. I have a set of speakers I Payed like $20 bucks for about 10 years ago. Most of the time I listen to everything through that. I figure if it sounds good that way then everything might be alright.

I also have a nice set of head phones (Sennheiser HD 280 Pro) but when I mix with them then everything sounds like crap through my other speakers an also my families PC's.

This is a really, really good take Steve! I can't wait to see your REC upload. tongue.gif

Listen back to it though. Their are a few timing issues in the beginning and towards the end with your take. Sounds like latency so maybe try to drag your guitar track back on the time line (to the left) just a little. See if that helps.

Great job man! smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Aug 11 2009, 12:00 AM

Thanks Jeff! biggrin.gif As for the timing, that's not latency, it's me, I'm still off a bit in some sections. I want to nail this lesson perfectly before I upload a video. When I can play it several times back to back with no mistakes, then I'll get out the camera... laugh.gif

I've nailed it a couple times already and tried video earlier, just not quite there yet. Should be soon though! All in the practice...

Posted by: UncleSkillet Aug 11 2009, 01:15 AM

That sounds great Steve! No worries, I know you'll nail it! smile.gif You and I both know everything changes when you hit the video record button. wink.gif Just do like 10 takes in a row. One will be perfect enough I'm sure.

You didn't use the latency as an excuse for your timing. That's a very cool quality to have. Always be honest with yourself and what you hear when you play your recordings back.

I guess I'll just sit here and wait now smile.gif Hurry up!

Posted by: skennington Aug 11 2009, 02:18 AM

Sorry to keep you waiting man, and yeah, I stay honest to myself. It's the only way I feel I will progress. Just don't want to do things half dollar for the sake of a passing grade.. smile.gif

Hey Steve, sorry for not being around for a few days. I had a few things going on I needed to deal with. Everything is ok now though.

I really loved your REC upload. Great job man! smile.gif tongue.gif

Everyone has given you some great comments and the only thing I can add is this. Just think about your right hand when you're playing a heavy rhythm riffing piece like this. That's what made the timing off in the middle coming out of the chord change. Just my opinion though. I find it easier to work a riff like this working a relaxed right hand (back and forth ) and just to make sure I accent the down stroke on the the right beat.

Your tone was spot on also! Great job man!

Posted by: skennington Aug 18 2009, 08:44 PM

Thanks Jeff and you are absolutely right. Being relaxed is most difficult for me and especially when the camera is on. Believe it or not, I'm even working on breathing to keep the tension down.. laugh.gif

I'll let you know soon what I'd like to work on Ok... smile.gif

Hey Steve,

I was thinking it would be nice to work on the same lesson together at the same time! What do you think?
This is one that I believe we can learn a lot from and have some fun with. Also there will be plenty of opportunities for us to discuss some theory basics and note choices. smile.gif

Hi Steve,

This is what I would like us to do with this lesson. I have been thinking ohmy.gif and want to run my ideas by you. wink.gif

First of all I want 1 upload for each video section of the lesson (I will do the same as you. You upload one and I will do the same after you). There are 5 total. This will allow us to really just focus on one small section at a time getting everything correct and also addressing any questions or problems. There is a catch though. We are going to upload are recordings with NO backing track, just a metronome click. You can practice with the backings or what ever you think works best for you but not with the upload. I'll let you pick the "CLICK" sound. laugh.gif biggrin.gif After we are done we will both upload our takes to the REC with the backing for our final grades. smile.gif Doing all this video interaction is going to be very helpful for us and there are some very cool metal/rock techniques we can learn. Since we are both on Skype now we can also have interactive Q&A sessions or just have some fun.

How does you calender look? Can you start on the lesson this weekend?

Posted by: skennington Aug 29 2009, 03:20 AM

I like this idea of yours Jeff.. smile.gif I think it will help others who sees this as well. As for this weekend, I may have a bit of time tomorrow, the forecast for our area is rain so the kids will have no choice but to stay inside.. ph34r.gif laugh.gif

Sunday, I have to take a little rod trip to look at a new toy I've been eying. biggrin.gif Sold the boat already and made some decent cash on it and looking at something cool... unsure.gif Not practical for my situation but I used to own a couple and want another. If I buy it, you will see some pictures Sunday night..

Stay tuned!!!

Not another dirt bike Steve huh.gif

Well if you think it is best then enjoy it. cool.gif

I can't help you with riding one of those unless you want to wreak and get hurt ph34r.gif I'm good at that laugh.gif

I understand about the kid thing. Your suppose to get a Tropical storm that comes close. It will bring rain but you should be OK wink.gif

Glad you like the lesson ideas. smile.gif Let me know when you can start.

Probably don't have the year right (for the car. Just dreaming) but have fun. Take a road trip up and stay with me for a few days. You and your family are always welcome, I just need a warning smile.gif It would be a good time guaranteed. wink.gif

Posted by: skennington Aug 29 2009, 02:47 PM

We may just have to do that in the future. Or, maybe next summer you guys could come down to Myrtle Beach for your vacation and we could meet up there. I have the beach 2.5 hours south and the mountains about 2.5 hours north of where we live.

Although I have been wanting to try http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/solo-from-spindles/ lesson of Trond's. The dynamics, harmonics and melody are awesome imo! This may be it..

OK, dynamics and phrase development it is then. smile.gif That track sound familiar, Davids collab right rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif

As far as the tone it's pretty good. It sounds to thin for me and sits in the background some. I think you and I have some differences here and that's health and good. For me I would like maybe a touch more on the mid's around 750hz, little less bass (dump it around 80hz) and set your EQ to dump the highs around maybe 9.3hrz. See what you think. It is different depending on the modeling amp, cab, mic, etc... not to mention your guitar and pickups.

Sounds like a plan man. When can you upload a take? I am fine with just doing 1 or 2 videos of the lesson at a time per upload. Then we can piece it all together and work on problem parts.

Here, try this tone patch to give me a reference. Play the same thing and upload another. There is plenty of drive in this patch so don't turn it up. The EQ I set is what I would really like to hear. If you like the tone then we can tweak it some. smile.gif

You might want to try playing with your volume nob to. Roll it back some and you'll notice the tone get fatter and more defined.

well that take was improvised so here is something similar using your tone. No other effects have been added and only one backing and one lead track in the DAW...Guitar Volume is rolled back a little more that halfway with full tone.

Well it's up to you and what you think. To me it sounds warmer, more even on the high end, also more vintage.

I like it a lot!! smile.gif You could use just a bit more grit maybe. If you want to try another improv set you guitar volume up just a notch. If you had it around half (or 5) then try 7ish.

Great takes tongue.gif

I agree man, thanks for the tone. smile.gif I'm going to play around a bit more with it and see what I can come up with. cool.gif

Whatcha think about this... biggrin.gif

HeHe, thanks man. smile.gif I did enjoy these and after the last one with David, I took his advice and started singing the melody ideas I had. Seemed to help the creativity.

My ears are getting better and I actually (think) I'm starting to hear the differences in keys and somewhat able to determine a few.

My fretboard knowledge is holding me back I believe. sad.gif I somewhat know the associated tones of the notes but not the note itself if that makes any sense.. laugh.gif

I think I need to start some exercises to really get a hold of where all the notes are. Any suggestions? My thoughts were to learn them all on one string, (low E) and then transpose them to the next string up.

Playing with my ear again.. laugh.gif I took a simple song and tried to connect some notes to the melody. All ear, no tab or even hearing the song, just trying to remember what I know of it. Going to take you to church on this one..

Btw, how bout them Bengals! wink.gif

I had a VISION and it was "Amazing Grace"! For the first time trying something like this it was pretty good. The more you do stuff like this the better you'll get at it. What helps me to figure things out is knowing the 7 scale shapes for major and minor. Once you learn the shapes (whole steps vs half steps) in one key your good to go for most things. It would really help you see the fret board differently. Also working on one string at a time can be helpful so you don't get stuck playing in the box. I'd be happy to work on some of this with you if you'ld like. Your improv skills would take a huge leap forward.

Yeah, how about those Bengals!! They pulled it off but had me a little worried in the second half. Every game its something with them but for the most part I think they looked really strong, especially for coming off a bye week. Next week is going to be another tough one, Pittsburgh at Pittsburgh. Another cardiac bowl!

Anyway, let me know if you want to work on the 7 scale shapes.
