**SORRY
THIS POST IS ON TWICE AS I EDITED THE TITLE
I just purchased a new web cam for my computer and it's got optical zoom and a remote control to zoom in / out which is very handy when shooting guitar vids. It shoots in HD and connects to my computer via FIREWIRE not usb. So if you don't have firewire, you'd need to either buy a firewire card for your desktop. If it's a windows laptop without firewire, stop reading here.
For those still reading, (mac users or folks with firewire connections on pc) you are in luck. You can get a cam like this for less than $75. I got it used on ebay and it's actually a HD Handycam from Canon (with real canon optic glass) called an HV30. It records directly over firewire to my computer so there is no file transfer process. I just hit record. Also, I can run my DAW while recording video. So when doing music recording with video, it works great. I then combine the audio and video in Adobe Premiere.
The HV20 and HV30 cameras (several years old at this point) are very cheap now on ebay and especially if you get one that has issues with the tape drive. ( I don't need the tape deck part of it as I"m using it to record direct to computer over firewire.) you can get a killer deal. These units used to cost well over $1,000. Now you can grab one with a bad tape head / transport, for under $100 all day long. For the price of a decent web cam, you can have a real nice camera with real glass in it for a lense, not plastic, and optical not digital zoom. This one upgrade will make your videos look way more pro. Worth looking in to
