GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ New Tube Screamer

Posted by: Todd Simpson Mar 18 2014, 11:06 PM

For a new generation of players and to celebrate it's storied history, IBANEZ is making a NEW TUBE SCREAMER! smile.gif Not just a reissue, this one FINALLY has a built in boost that can be applied BEFORE or AFTER The primary gain stage via handy toggle switch.

This is the type of handy thing that I've seen on boutique pedals and I'm happy to see ibby making these changes smile.gif The bad news is that it's $250!! So they are pricing it like a boutique pedal as well smile.gif But used they should be much cheaper and I'd like to try one in my signal chain!!

That looks pretty cool (I love green) but for that kind of money I'd opt for a handmade in the USA 'boutique' TS derivative.

For that kind of money, I'd buy another BULB OVERDRIVE smile.gif It seems crazy pricey doesn't it?

Very interesting!

I would love to see a comparison video between the Bulb OD and the new TS smile.gif Todd, if you get one - you know what do, in order to enlighten us too biggrin.gif

It does but Ibanez a few years ago came out with a 'handwired' 808 that was $350.00 (by the way, a TS was never hand wired, lol!) and Maxon - the actual co. that manufactures Ibanez fx - has many pedals that top $200.

*If that dual screamer makes it down to the hundred dollar range I'd get one just for the color.

I'd like to try one wink.gif Might be a while though!! Till one shows up on ebay smile.gif

Very true!!!! smile.gif I remember that thing. Also crazy pricey it seemed. I'm with you on getting one once they drop in price a bit wink.gif

How cool would that be? You could just reach and grab what you need and put it back in the display when done smile.gif Hmmm... I can imagine a ProTone display as well and maybe an OCD and Electro Harmonix display smile.gif Egad I'd turn my living room in to a Guitar Center!

I've gone through tons of crunch/distortion pedals over the years. My favorite has to be the ocd pedal. Simple crunch, but gets just heavy enough to play some heavy stuff, but not too over saturated at the same time. And it won't drain the piggy bank

I have stayed with my Suhr Shiba Drive for about 3 years now and I can say it does the thing for me smile.gif Haven't tried the OCD tho, but I heard a lot of folks praising it, so I'll definitely give it a go. I recently received a VOX AC15 and I am curious about the differences felt with various types of boost/od pedals on the amp - it only has a clean channel so it's not too difficult.

Wow, how very 'vintage toned' of you wink.gif
Great amp. They tend to favor the more mid-range flavored OD and gain pedals - i.e., a tube screamer type. Vox amps can be pretty bright when you don't crank them. Guys who crank them tend to favor treble boosters or something like an MXR micro-amp because as a Vox style amp gets louder it tends to get a little darker.
Plus - in my experience - because the AC15 is a lower powered (though fairly loud) EL84 amp - you don't have to hit it with too much gain to get it to roar.

TS, Rat, OCD, Xotic BB, Xotic AC and Crowther 'hotcake' are all popular ODs to use with Voxes. They all have that mid-range bump.

Thank you good sir biggrin.gif I heard a lot about the BB Preamp and I heard it in that famous Andy Timmons review on the Mesa Boogie and I thought it sounded fantastic. I will most probably call some friends and get an MXR Zakk Wylde and that green OD from MXR as well to see how those feel, as they are the closest I can put my hands on smile.gif

Posted by: Todd Simpson Apr 1 2014, 01:13 AM

Have you seen the TWO CHANNEL version? Pretty Spiff!!

Sweet Lord, no biggrin.gif Thanks for posting! I only knew the simple one smile.gif Here's the video with Andy:

Posted by: klasaine Apr 2 2014, 02:16 AM

Oddly, and even Xotic says this, but neither ch. of the Dual BB+ sounds exactly like the standard BB single ch. pedal. I can verify that as I have a standard issue BB (non-Timmons) and a buddy of mine has the dual ch. We can't get ours to sound alike. Both great but slightly different.

Imagine I had the K7 from Ibanez - it had ONE volume button biggrin.gif enough for this old boy'o here! Ken and Todd, which od/booster would you choose if you would have to pick a favorite?

Posted by: klasaine Apr 4 2014, 01:35 AM

I couldn't pick a favorite.
I have a few different guitar/amp combinations that require different ODs.
What sounds great with a Tele or Strat (single coils) is usually too gained out for an LP (humbucker).

In relation to another thread ... some may rightly feel that overall quality in guitar building has declined but man if you're into FX boxes - this era is your nirvana!

*If someone held a gun to my head and said. I'm stealing all your overdrives but you can keep one. I'd probably keep my Fulldrive III.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Apr 4 2014, 02:46 AM

I'm suprised you'd even have to ask!!! The BEST OD/BOOST I've EVER EVER EVER Heard.....

PRO TONE BULB DELUXE

REASONS WHY:

*THE DIODE SWITCH!!!: - Makes it sound like a different pedal in each mode.
*THE ATTACK SWITCH!! -Also makes it sound like a different pedal

So Both switches up, down, one up, the other down, etc. Each combination provides unique tones and the aggressive harmonic profile and growling/snarling character of whatever black magic is in that box won me over smile.gif

I made FOUR VIDS featuring the pedal and Pro Tone used all of them on their site!! They didn't tell me they were using them but that's fine smile.gif I'm happy they shared them.

Heh! Amazing! I somehow thought you will say that one is the one biggrin.gif But man, why did you sell it? If it's that good, you don't wanna get rid of something, unless you need the money ..

Posted by: Todd Simpson Apr 5 2014, 06:18 PM

I LOVED that thing smile.gif But I don't Marry my gear, I just "date" it smile.gif I was wanting try the ELEVEN RACK after hearing good things about it so I sold the Pro Tone and got enough from that one pedal to buy the ELEVEN RACK!!! It's a KILLER overdrive. But it's just one pedal. For about the same price, I've got an entire rig/recording interface with software app control in the ELEVEN rack. So it was a pretty easy decision smile.gif

I may get one or another pro tone later. I"m always swapping gear smile.gif

I was sure it was a necessary move in order to have a better setup at hand. Dunno man, I kinda fall in love with some things and I don't want to sell them. They are indeed just a few, but they exist smile.gif If the new rig suits your need, that means it was the right move to do biggrin.gif

Posted by: Todd Simpson Apr 6 2014, 07:09 PM

I did love that pedal but it's only one pedal. It's amazing at what it did, but weighing one pedal against a full on high quality processor/8 channel interface with software control? Pedal is gonna lose. smile.gif

The only gear I can't imagine selling are my two vintage ibanez guitars just because they'd be tough to replace. I've played the same model from the same time period and these two seem to play better. So I'll probably keep rotating the other gear smile.gif

Well, we are different here biggrin.gif I am A HUGE fan of things that do ONE thing, but they do it BEST smile.gif If it suits my tastes, I will hold on to that and get the best of my rig with what I got. I may seem crazy for being so 'oldschool' biggrin.gif but that's just me and of course, each persons needs are different, so the conclusion is pretty simple.

I've always loved keeping things simple and enjoying life more smile.gif

I hear ya smile.gif If I was running a amp/head, you'd have to pry the pro tone out of my cold dead hands. I tried it with a SOLDANO and several MARSHALL heads and it just made them come alive, even at low volume. Tried it against an old tube screamer, an OCD and one of the MESA overdrives and it was head and shoulders above in terms of overall tone and definition.

GOOD NEWS!! They are going to make the BULB DELUXE again!! They were a limited run and were selling up to $400 on ebay and the new version is going to sell for only $225! I paid $300 for mine. They are chaging the graphic and using a second foot switch instead of the second toggle which is a great idea for live work.

It's tough being a gear addict and a gear pimp!!! I might have to buy another one myself at that price smile.gif But keep in mind there is around an 8 WEEK BUILD TIME!!!

I waited a couple of months plus for mine. Some folks get seriously irritated during the wait and post all kinds of nasty things. He stops responding to the same "is it ready yet" emails after a while and folks sometimes just freak out. He typically just refunds the money at that point from what I gather so I only emailed once a month smile.gif

I really wish there was a PLUGIN version of that pedal but such is life!!! You'd think I'd get some sort of discount or free pedals or even a loaner but nope. Nothin, nadda. Just a fan of the tone smile.gif

Now that I don't have one anymore no more vids forthcoming featuring that pedal though!! But there will be some featuring the 11 Rack smile.gif

Todd

I understand about wait time. I have a few things that I've waited for for months. I'm very patient.

I was pretty patient during the build as I saw how irritated dennis got at being nagged. He was evidently appreciative as he upgraded me to the BULB DELUXE from the BULB for free. In the end it was well worth the wait smile.gif As a bonus, I sold it for a good bit more than I paid for it so I was able to get the ELEVEN RACK and something towards a midi foot controller smile.gif

HA, "Favorite Pedal", then sells it. rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

Looks like it does similar things to HBE Big D pedal (but it's more a Smoother metal sound, as apposed to the more wild Bid D sound)

Gotta love all the features pedals can have.

It was my favorite pedal for a good while smile.gif My favorites change with time as I'm a serial gear addict. Currently my fave bit of kit is the 11 RACK!! After I got the 11 RACK, I really didn't need the Pro Tone it seemed so I sold it fill the finance gap created when I purchased it smile.gif

Some guys find something and keep it forever, I"m just not one of those guys. But to each his own!
